I think a lot of first time car owners are also getting Teslas and just don't realize how sprinty they are compared to average ICE cars.

It's because of the performance of the cars, even the base RWD invites driving very 'zippy'. It's like drunks, some become fun, some become assholes.

It's more that Tesla just took a bunch of BMW's target audience. It's the same drivers they just switched brands.

these “bad drivers” come in all shapes and forms… if that same driver changes from their “BMW” or “Tesla” to a “Toyota” or something else, does that suddenly make them a “good” and “safe driver” due to the car brand they drive?

Some of them might just be using FSD (can definitely be inconsiderate sometimes), and others are just having fun with the acceleration available to them.

Teslas are very quick off the line, and some drivers, especially new owners - get carried away and don’t moderate their speed or behavior.

My experience has been the opposite. I always see a woman doing the bare minimum speed holding up traffic, and oblivious of it all, talking to a passenger or on the phone.

I use my MYP’s performance quite liberally, but never in a manner I would consider aggressive, or directed at anyone else on the road. Never owned a BMW or any car one would consider sporty.

In 2024 the top trade ins for a Tesla were Toyota, Honda, and Ford. Toyotas made up over 25% of trade ins.
Mercedes and BMW combined were less than 10%. They led the luxury segment but do not make up the majority of buyers.
I think having a fast accelerating vehicle turns people into an inconsiderate driver.
You see the same thing with Ford Raptor owners. They speed up and cut people off more than other trucks. There are just fewer of them on the road so they don’t get the reputation.
An entry-level Tesla has the same acceleration as a twin turbo 3 series BMW. Put a Toyota driver behind the wheel of a Tesla and you’ll see the same behavior. There are now more Teslas on the road so it’s more noticeable.

I’m probably a bad person to ask as I had at least 8 BMW’s before my Tesla, but the fact is, it’s very frustrating to be behind an ICE machine at a red light. They are SO SLOW getting up to speed, it’s like being behind a horse and buggy. Inevitably, you always aim for the empty lane. Then you are halfway up the block before your neighbors are clearing the intersection, and you just move into the lane you wanted to be in. I’m sure (because I experienced it before I got my first M3), you feel like someone is racing or challenging you off the light. Don’t take it personally - it’s not about you, just about your car.

You are forgetting to consider per capita. There are 5 times more Toyotas than BMWs on the road and yet a relatively smaller percentage of trade ins. That means bmw drivers are more likely to get a Tesla than Toyota drivers.
I came over from Mazda and still drive like a Mazda driver. It didn't suddenly make me a jerk that I now can't go from 0-60 in 2.85 seconds.

Nah, something about German cars and pickup trucks still seems to attract the stupidest of the stupid. Tesla drivers aren't even close.
