FSD Jail?
Getting a tesla mainly for FSD soon. Curious how the “FSD jail” system works? What things in particular count and strikes and does it tell you if you had a strike? Do they reset?

I’ve been driving with fsd for 3 years/15,000 miles. Never been to jail. Never gotten a strike. I can only help by saying if you drive within reason, you should be fine.
Yes, it will disable and warn you that you have received a strike. One strike gets removed each week.
"Pay attention" warnings that get ignored two or three times results in a strike. Strike locks you out of FSD for the remainder of that driver (drive ends when you park the car). I don't recall if it's 3 or 5 strikes to lock you out completely. 1 strike falls off every week you don't get any strike worthy behavior.
Sorry, getting 3is "pay attention warning" in short order, not just ignoring them. Ignoring the results in the car stopping and I'm guessing at that point it's an auto strike
5 strikes and you’re locked out for a week. You lose one strike each week.
Every other comment that says it takes a week to forgive a strike is giving you outdated info. It was recently shortened to half a week (3.5 days). https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/model3/en_us/GUID-2CB60804-9CEA-4F4B-8B04-09B991368DC5.html > A strikeout is forgiven after half a week (3.5 days), as long as you don't receive another strikeout in that time.
All I’m gonna say is if you manage to hit the strikes needed then you shouldn’t be on the road. Unless you’re regularly falling asleep while driving this won’t happen. It’s very hard to get a strike if you are conscious and it’s only one strike, you need like 3 or 5 and they reset regularly.
Other people have given good answers already but I’ll add to it. My wife and I have driven two teslas with four different FSD versions since 2023 (version 11,12,13,14) and neither of us has ever gotten a single strike. There’s no reason you should get a strike.
Been driving with FSD since you could install it - long before it was worth anything. Never was in jail, though maybe an arrest. A long time and many updates ago I wanted to pass a guy wandering in and out of his lane. I got in position, and saw my chance and blew past him at over 90 mph. Ok, maybe an extra digit - REALLY wanted to see this guy in my rear view mirror! The car screamed at me, told me to take over, and FSD wouldn’t turn on again. I thought maybe I’d broken it, but after I reached my destination, and started my return trip, it had apparently decided I’d been punished enough, and resumed working.
I can trigger strikes from wearing a hat or sunglasses that block the camera from seeing my eyes, and ignoring its instructions to nudge the steering wheel to confirm I am paying attention, or from looking at the screen for too long and ignoring its alerts.
Always wear sunglasses
I do my fair share of looking away (e.g. finding music to pay, looking for a destination) and never get a strike. If you’re getting strikes regularly, you’re likely being a very distracted driver.
It’s way more lenient these days. Haven’t had one in months and months. But even if you do get one, put the car in park at a stop light, then back in drive and you are on your way. I’m not sure how many strikes it is, but it will eventually block you for a week. You CAN get some rapid warnings sometimes, leading to a strike. If that happens, put it in park and it clears the count, then continue on your way. The warnings will be reset to zero.
Ive gotten 2 and was on my best behavior till it went down to avoid jail, i have a 2017 S90d with no internal camera so i dont have to deal with the eyes.....but i do stupid shit like make it drive 85 in the rain, not hold the wheel for long periods and all around everything they dont want you doing in fsd.......so youll be fine lmao
You kind of have to be really distracted or literally be falling asleep to get strikes. It resets after a week too. Nothing you have to really worry about
I am a golfer in a warm climate. Twice, following a round of golf, I got in my Y with hat and sunglasses on (force of habit - 1st Tesla). Before I even got out of the course facility, I received a strike even after grabbing the wheel as prompted. FSD hates hats and sunglasses…period.
I only get strikes for going over 85, because I’ll be in FSD and it’s not passing someone fast enough to make the gap….
The only time I’ve ever gotten strikes is in our Model X with HW3, no interior camera. I thought that was great at first but I fits it makes the steering unit super sensitive. On top of that, it’s doesn’t alert you like our other Tesla, flashing blue where it’s easier to see. I’ll be riding, paying attention, hand on the wheel and strike. It’s happened more than once. I’ve learned in that car I have to give more resistance in the wheel, change the volume…something.
I've never had a strike.
This is my challenge. Commute is a mix of surface and high speed highway. Lots of challenges with slow drivers holding up long stretches of road. Being able to go from 0-60 as fast as we can means you take every opening to jump those slow pokes. In terms of strikes, they do roll off. Not sure what the refresh is, 30 days, version updates, but they do. I typically have 1 strike at all times, lol
Strikes can happen, specially when first using FSD. But once you recognize the warning beeps and flashing screen, it's very easy to avoid them completely. That being said, you need 5 active strikes to be put in "FSD jail". Each strike goes away no longer than 1 week after it was issued (could be sooner now). Think demerit points.
I've owned my tesla since June 2025, used FSD almost exclusively, and never gotten a strike.
Strikes or Jail won’t take away FSD forever. It doesn’t really happen unless you seriously don’t care at all to look at the road.
One thing that never gets mentioned is the FSD will immediately disengage if you remove your seat belt. It doesn't count as a strike but it can be annoying to be without it for a couple hours if you are on a road trip and need to remove seat belts to take off a jacket or something.
Why should this even be mentioned? You can’t enable FSD if you don’t have your seatbelt on, and more of a reason it isn’t allowed is because abusers would activate FSD, unbuckle their seatbelt and get out of the seat, then rebuckle.
Okay, just more information, it warns you several times before a strike, 5 strikes is the limit. Also it warns you what your doing before a strike happens. 3.5 days of no strikes and a strike falls off Once you hit 5 strikes, you have 3.5 days no self driving privileges.
Oh yes, that dosent count as a strike st least, but FSD wont drive above 90. Ive done thst a few times to get pass bad drivers and forget. You can just disagage FSD pass the car then rengage. When that happens you have to stop, put it in park before FSD starts again.
If you got 3~5 strikes, then probably your driving habit is bad, shoud seek some advises. If not, don’t worry too much. Mostly okay.
FSD is a scam. Don’t buy if this is your only reason.
I am leasing a 2026 Y x 2 years. I mainly bought it for FSD. It’s on V 13.2.9. I have had 1 strike out within 50 miles which I believe is because I was wearing sunglasses. I have had several alerts for immediate take overs even though I was attentive and had my hands on the wheels , looking straight ahead on to the road. The car otherwise drives very good like a Volvo. As to FSD however, I haven’t been as lucky as others in this group or the you-tubers bragging about FSDs. I’m hoping it would get better as I drive more and get more experience. If FSD is the primary reason, I would recommend leasing over buying since the technology is constantly evolving.
Don’t touch your phone
Why not update to v14?
Yes I will. I just bought it a week ago and the update is not available for a few thanks
