Out of focus dash camera?

paaaaaaaants | 2025-12-30 00:00 | 3 views

Images from my dashcam: https://imgur.com/a/72KMlD3 2024 Seal. Not sure if I installed this wrong or the quality of the camera is just terrible, but my dashcam (https://eevastore.com.au/products/byd-oem-dash-cam this one or at least maybe a previous version of it, bought December 2024) leaves my dash always in focus, and everything that isn't on the inside of the windscreen out of focus? (dadjoke incoming: "Well it is a DASHcam?"). Can someone who has an oem camera confirm that theirs isn't this terrible? I know dashcams aren't going to be fucking amazing, but I'd hope I could at least *read the number plate of the car right in front of me*. Will also accept a better camera model suggestion, if there is one that fits in the oem slot.

Probably a touch blurry. You haven't accidentally touched the lens during installation? The OEM camera is only ~~720p~~ 1080p resolution, so images aren't super great. Good enough for who's at fault, not really enough for reading number plates at a distance. To the best of my knowledge, there isn't a better built in option, you'd have to go for a separate unit to get better quality images.

I find the reflection from the HUD and vents a bigger issue for me

Good call on the lens touch - I can check, but it still just feels like the focal length is off. Pretty sure the camera is 1080p though. Maybe I'm just expecting too much from a camera. Still would love someone else to tell me if that much of the dash is in frame for them as well.

I'll check mine in a few hours. Yeah, sorry, is 1080p

The HUD? Are we talking about the OEM camera? My HUD isn't even in frame. Can you take a photo of what the camera shows?

Not the HUD itself but the “vent” that projects it

Oh yeah that is out of focus for sure

red_dragin 2025-12-30 10:25

Yeah checked mine, can see the same amount of the HUD dash opening as yours.

Mine seems a lot better, maybe he left the protective plastic on the lens by chance?

I could help

Can you mount it closer to the windscreen, seems to be a fare way back to be able to see the dash, I think this is your issue.

No, it's in the OEM slot for it behind the mirror. There's only one spot for it.

I remember when I installed mine, it was in focus for the first week. Then, out of nowhere, it became super blurry, not sure why. I installed an aftermarket dashcam after that.

paaaaaaaants 2026-01-06 10:55

Does the aftermarket fit in the OEM slot, or do you just mean a separate one?

incompetent-cat 2026-01-06 11:12

Separate one. The OEM one is basically impossible to remove after installing. Tho i am planning to bring the car to an official BYD maintenance shop to check it out.
