Am I going crazy with charging?

wingedkeyboard | 2025-12-18 14:02 | 3 views

Just to start, I haven’t spoken to BYD. I got my Seal earlier this week, I went to charge it the other night at multiple charge stations (at least 2x ccs) but every time I plug it in, it faults out right away. Even if I do get the communicating screen, it’s only up for a split second before saying the charge is finished. The apps also report a fault on the charger when I refresh the page, but it’s every tritium / Evie / charge fox charger. I’ve only ever had luck at a Tesla charger, that has cause me no issues whatsoever. I’m more than happy to speak with BYD but wanted to ask out if anyone had any ideas on how to potentially fix. I also have not done a factory reset yet. Located in Geelong, Victoria

Why are you charging it publicly? Much cheaper at home, or free with solar.

Im on a novated lease for the car and public charging is subsidised! So I’ll get what I pay back. I can charge at home but I’m in a rental and will have to ask my PM if I can get a charger installed!

Similar story happened to me but instead of the car reporting that it's finished charging, the charger did. I have to repeat the process 6-7 times for it to get working. And with slow charger response from the app, it could take a while retrying until it is charging

If you mean you get to “claim” the invoiced amount from commercial charger, be mindful that it doesn’t mean you get it “free”; it only means that you get an effective discount equivalent to your marginal tax bracket + 2%. Ie if your tax bracket is 30%, you are getting equivalent of 32% of the payment back.  This is the same as every other “thijg you get to claim on tax”. Claiming tax deduction on work related item, charity donation etc do not make them totally free, they only make them cheaper.

I only charge at public fast chargers when on longer trips, otherwise I charge with the slow granny charger at home. I found that Evie and Charge Fox charging stations will often error if you don't follow their charging steps exactly as listed. It took me 5-6 tries at my first Charge Fox station. It's a shame that Tesla chargers seem to be the most user friendly, as I' prefer to never use them.

Charging at home and paying full rates is always cheaper than public charging, incorporating the "subsidy" and assuming you are in the top income bracket. You can charge your car from a basic GPO, it's just slower. You can also try holding the power button / volume button down in the centre console to "restart" the car. Source: SL7

I had the opposite, I’m able to charge elsewhere but not at a particular Tesla supercharger. It fails to communicate to it. This is also after rebooting the console (which I didn’t think would help) and updated the version from 1.0 to 3.0. Other EV chargers like Ampol, EVIE chargers, Chargefox were ok. Well I’ve only got my Sealion 7 for 2 months and I just tried them to prove to my better half that it could be done. I also took my car into BYD for a different issue this week and told them. They have updated something. I’ll be trying it out soon. Also, if you haven’t already do download the Plugshare app. It may help you find cheaper if not free charging at some places near you.

Thank you for that! I’m new to this whole novated lease and claiming thing. Just wondering, if I have electrify in the annual budget, wouldn’t that work the same as a fleet card for a ICE vehicle? That’s how it was explained to me from the novated lease company. Appreciate your time!

changyang1230 2025-12-18 22:52

Yeah functionally it’s similar ie you get to “pay for the expense using pretax dollar”, which in turn is equivalent to any tax deduction ie “it is as if you get a discount equivalent to your marginal tax bracket + Medicare levy”.

I don't have a Seal, but an Atto 3. I had issues with DC charging altogether because the 12v battery was bad, so after I replaced that it's all good now.

Cost to install a charger at home is and the cost to install solar and battery is????

red_dragin 2025-12-19 01:44

You can claim home charging too, just needs to be your electricity account. You can't claim both home and public, so I charge 99% at home and claim that. Much easier with the car and I both sleeping whilst it charges. And with 8c kwhr 12am-6am, and 4.2c per km repayment, I get ~25c per kwhr back for per 8c outlay 🤫 Adds about 45% in 6hrs (I've got 32amp/7.2kw charger at home mind you)

anpanman100 2025-12-19 02:52

No need to install a charger, just plug into the wall and you will get about 100km range overnight.

Check out you are running the latest firmware or of there are any updates.

Have you tried resetting the car by keeping the driver's door handle button pressed?

I have had similar this last week normally I use a tesla charger (0.33/kWh before 7am) without issue. But the last 4 attempts at 3 bp pulse locations I got the following: -Connection error followed by starting and then stopping 0kw deliverd -Started charging deliverd 14kwh then dropped to 1.7kwh -Worked without issue -Connection errors no matter what I did

The Seal should've come with a granny charger. OP renting so solar is out of the question.

[deleted] 2025-12-20 22:45

This doesnt answer the question and is critical of something OP could be expected to do at any point when they need a charge.

[deleted] 2025-12-21 09:11

if you don't pay / use that, in the end your balloon payment will be lower charge at home with granny charger is your best option for comfort and cost

antifragile 2025-12-21 11:43

You don’t get anything back you just pay Yang pretax dollars via your lease payments. You don’t need a charger installed just plug in the granny charger overnight.

Just a follow up i got an rfid card (Bp Pulse about $5 arrived in about 5 days) which seemed to work better. Following the process of pressing the button to start then plugging in and then swiping the card on the reader to start. Up until this point I only thought the button was for stopping charging.

I am also having this issue. I am traveling interstate. Got the car a week ago, have home zappi charger set up. But I've tried BP pulse and Evie on the road, and I found a hotel with a charger and had to stay over night. Then got to my destination with 10% left. We called the BYD help people, we called both BP pulse help line. None work! Trouble shooting we have - rebooted car system by pressing the audio button, we have not got the scheduled charging on. I have added the apps (Evie, bp pulse, charge fix etc) with my credit card already added. https://preview.redd.it/m6mnfh02y89g1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=86e8c5ba217837493aa264b39573ca64de14072e
