Bit of FYI for us Sandgropers. New "EV" label requirements.

From 1st January 2026 you need to add this little blue label to your licence plates, although enforcement won't actually happen until 1st January 2027. All the details here: [https://www.transport.wa.gov.au/projects-planning/electric-vehicles/electric-vehicle-labels](https://www.transport.wa.gov.au/projects-planning/electric-vehicles/electric-vehicle-labels)

I'm surprised you haven't had to do it until now. Feel like this has been mandatory in Victoria since the birth of EVs. They had to slap one on my custom plates when I bought my seal.

Yeh we are about 20 years behind on most things traffic related. On the plus side, no toll roads. Edit: Except speed cameras.

Super cheap etc sell them. Grab some before the price gouging starts My personalised plates are a similar blue, so they blend in quite well.

Funny you mentioned it, that one on the photo is from Supercheapauto. None in stock in WA when I purchased it (or at least none within a fairly large radius of where I lived) so Supercheap posted it from SA.

Service NSW gave me a few bags of them. I put two on my car. The others are somewhere in the house XD

https://i.redd.it/jybo121emy5g1.gif I would have taken 2 off your hands

AEVA were advertising on their FB page the other day that they are doing tags for under $10 shipped - https://www.aeva.asn.au/forms/ev-licence-plate-tag-1/

South Australia has had that for years.

You also need to get them for non-plugin hybrids (e.g. a normal Prius), at least in NSW/QLD. Any car with a high-voltage battery (>50V probably) I believe

Why do we need to label everything?

[deleted] 2025-12-09 08:17

Because it’s easier to fight a fire when you know what the fuel is. It’s also easier to not cut HV wires with jaws of life/sawzall if you know they’re there. Some people don’t enjoy being electrocuted just doing their day to day jobs. When cars have multiple versions available having a uniform label is great.

havafati 2025-12-09 18:08

They are free in NSW just have to ask at the Motor Registry. Can’t believe they’re not available to you the same at your State Motor Vehicle Registry. That’s a rort if not.

red_dragin 2025-12-09 22:23

On initial registration, they come fitted by the dealer. But if you get personalised plates, you need new ones. And just checked, not free in Queensland.

havafati 2025-12-10 00:05

That sucks. They should be free.

Sweet-Ad2579 2025-12-28 04:08

what's the point? why do you need to know it is an ev via a sticker and wouldn't most people know it is?

speddie23 2025-12-28 04:30

The link says why but the tl;dr is so emergency services know they have a battery to deal with in case of fire etc. We know it's an EV, but with the flood of all these new brands and even traditional makes of cars having EV and ICE versions (say, the Hyundai Kona), it's not always clear what is what.
