Energy Consumption

Hey All, 2025 Seal Premium in Melbourne, getting about 18.5kwh/100km which is a lot higher than I expected. Wondering what others are experiencing? It's pretty cold and a lot of my trips are less than 10km, so maybe heater and battery preconditioning is pushing it up? I drive fairly conservatively in Normal mode, but thought I should be in the high 15's to mid 16's and around 500km from a full charge. At this rate I struggle to get 400km.

The heater tends to consume a lot of power as I’ve noticed over winter. It will drop back down to lower levels in spring as you slowly stop using the heater

peepyboy 2025-08-17 01:20

Im in Brisbane, i have a dynamic and drive about 40kms to work everyday, i had an average of 15.1kwh per 100kms on normal mode with high regen breaking. My drive is probably a good mix of highway and traffic lol, I read somewhere that sports mode is more efficient supposedly so I have reset my average and have begun driving in purely sports mode to test.

It's the heater. Heater or aircon make a huge difference. Short trips aren't that detrimental in an EV, except if you're using heater or aircon, they could be working very hard in that time to hit temp set points. And the slower you drive, the longer heater/aircon are on, the worse the efficiency. Eco/normal/sport mode make little difference, as all they do is make the throttle increasingly responsive. Ours is in full time sport mode, as otherwise the throttle lag is annoying. Ditch the heater and you should be able to get sub 15 efficiency fairly easily.

I got mine less than a week and drove in ECO with normal regenerative braking.. 2025 seal premium. Melbourne. https://preview.redd.it/mxrmgw3mfhjf1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58aa5eb3726b826907200a9179ef3d56a6cc4de4

It’s the heater and the battery management system. Last I checked the seals come from the factory with the system that makes sure the battery operates at optimal temp. Cold weather that means warming it up as well. I’m in WA and in summer I can get into the 12s when that and the aircon aren’t operating

red_dragin 2025-08-17 01:51

I see ~15kw/100 if the temperature is above about 15, but as soon as it drops to single digits, it jumps up to around 18. So as others have said, it's just the heater and battery management system consuming more power.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I figured it was likely the cold weather but have only had the car about 3 weeks so still learning.

I’ve been tracking my Seal Performance pretty closely, and noticed the efficiency on the dash doesn’t match reality. On a 6–100% AC charge I pulled about 84 kWh from the wall, so usable battery seems closer to 77–79 kWh. Based on SoC drop vs distance, my real-world efficiency works out around 19–21 kWh/100 km, giving me 380–420 km range depending on driving. The car usually shows 16–17 kWh/100 km and a much higher range estimate, so the dash numbers underreport consumption. Anyone else seeing this?

From the quick reading I just did (with admittedly very limited info available), the battery pre-heating system is for fast charging only. It wouldn't make sense for the batteries to pre-heat for driving. Operating at lower efficiency at lower temperatures will naturally produce more internal heat in the batteries, so they will heat themselves anyway. In theory, this does mean more energy usage on short trips in winter. But in our experience (admittedly in Western Sydney, not quite as cold as Melbourne) we get far better efficiency in winter (without the heater) compared to summer (constantly running aircon), even on short trips.

I've noticed that the charge percentage doesn't seem a linear value like you would think. I've got around 15k on the odometer. The first 10% from full charge goes down slowly no matter the conditions. The next 90% - 30% varies greatly with highway/town driving, warm/cold weather, how heavy on the for you are, etc. The most accurate data is the last 30%. The discharge rate is much closer in line as the estimated range value goes down. In winter on highway driving I'm lucky to get 350kms (~26kWh/100ks!). The best I've had is mid spring and autumn around town driving for 550kms (~15kWh/100ks). Never been close to the 650km range that's indicated at full charge. That's my experiences so far anyway.

cantbethatbadcanit 2025-08-17 09:51

Really? That's interesting. Sports mode for efficiency..that's cool

peepyboy 2025-08-17 09:52

I dont know how true the statement i read was but I can get back to you in a week and update lol

Toggle2 2025-08-17 10:55

I've heard you should try using heated seats instead of the heater since it's more efficient

timeanspace 2025-08-17 23:47

Did you factor in losses during charging?

CasualJan 2025-08-18 01:09

Brisbane here, so not as cold as Melbourne (presumably) BYD app is saying 15.7kW-h/100km for the last 50km driven.

Lumpy_Swimming468 2025-08-18 01:51

Well it was 6 deg at my place this morning, so almost certainly colder than Brisbane 😂. Thanks for the info on your consumption.

Also, just FYI, the first new set of tyres went on a few thousand km back, so yeah, you can get about 40k out of your tyres

Lumenatti99 2025-08-18 03:28

Have a Performance in Sydney and the best I’ve ever seen was 17.5kwh/100km. We are sitting at 19kwh/100km overall on ~30k kms on the clock. Often goes up to 22-23kwh. They def don’t seem to be as efficient as some other EVs. Granted we drive it in Sport often and make use of the power but even driving conservatively we only got about 17.5kwh. Think it’s just what the BYD motors get.

We got 27k kms out of the Conti EcoContacts 6’s. No where near what you got! But we def use the power often, hence the higher power usage in sport all the time as well.

pootie107 2025-08-18 23:53

Yes. I typically see 5-10% charge loss charing with AC

Secure_Scale2063 2025-08-24 02:00

**Sports mode might have better efficiency on the highway.**(from tiktok)

UDK1983 2025-08-29 11:19

40k kms on a set of EcoContacts ... Wow

UDK1983 2025-08-29 11:22

Yes the 'Guess O Meter' is wildly off! I would rather it show the correct value when at 100% rather than defaulting back to 650kms and then trying to correct this as the battery discharges. If it showed the range based on the Average Long Term consumption, this number would be somewhere in the range of 475 to 500kms for me.

UDK1983 2025-08-29 11:26

Seal Performance in India. The drive is 100kms each day of which 75km is at between 80 to 100kmph and the balance at 25kmph. AC is usually at 22 DegC. https://preview.redd.it/gvgdpcum1ylf1.jpeg?width=699&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e5e62d20e5da78d388b74c4265b68b4c161a1d4

Tone_Beginning 2025-09-04 08:00

I see my mileage is better than most for my Seal Premium. After 1.4.1 update my last 50km usage is 14.1KW per 100 KM. Life time usage for the car is 14.2KW per 100 KM after 15 months ownership. This is consistent with the 500-550 km range I estimate per full charge. Living in Perth I don’t use the heating much but do use air con in summer. The white paint certainly minimises air con use. I do notice air con and heating chew up more energy. I use high brake regen. I drive mostly in Sport mode conservatively but give it a squirt every now and then.

Lumpy_Swimming468 2025-09-04 09:48

Update on my original post. I've tried using the heater a lot less and just the heated seat for my 8 minute commute to work. Typically can get under 15kwh/100km which is more in line with what I expected. Now having a better understanding, so if it's cold, I just whack the heater up and get toasty!

FerociousVader 2025-10-04 05:47

What tire did you go to? There's not a lot of information on alternatives for the seal premium.

Lumenatti99 2025-10-16 02:56

Conti Eco Contact 6’s just put on what was on there to start. May go with Michelin PS5’s next time or some Pirelli P Zeros

FerociousVader 2025-10-16 04:35

I was thinking of going PS5s... I find the eco contacts a bit lifeless... The random Giti tires on the Dynamiq actually felt more fun (but I wanted the HUD and leather and stuff)

Lumenatti99 2025-10-17 01:57

The ride is definitely better on the Dynamic and Premium even though the Performance has FSD, the ride is quite stiff and unforgiving, even in relatively softer tyres. Only got it for the AWD and 390kw. If they had the same drive train in the Premium, with the AWD and 390kw, would have gone that route. But it’s looking like it might be our first and last BYD because of the difficulty getting the service to sort out a vibration in the driveline. Was looking at what Denza models might be coming to Oz, but their customer service leaves much to be desired. Love the power, silence, and tech, but without a support network, a great one, people won’t stick with the brand going forward.

I got 50000 on my rear and at 54k for the front have not changed then yet , but it's a lot of hwy driving
