Anyone else been rear ended?

Acrobatic-Syrup-21 | 2025-05-21 02:58 | 59 views

As per title, got shunted this morning, not terribly hard but it has pushed the boot in and the part of the frame that holds the latch is far enough in to stop the boot closing, and the cover for the boot well won't fit in the hole anymore. I'm assuming just a sub frame but who knows? Curious to know if anyone else has had this damage? Repair time? Possibility of an economic write off due to possible chassis damage, given the battery is structurally connected to it as far as I know?

Yup. Took 5 months 1 week for my car to get fixed. Had a replacement Tesla M3 in the meantime.

Acrobatic-Syrup-21 2025-05-21 03:06

Yikes. I assume that was a while ago? I'm assuming the supply chain issues have been resolved....

2niteshow 2025-05-21 03:09

Last August. Got it back January sometime for a bit then lost my license for 3 months 🙃. I was ubering also so racked up the kms on the tesla and am nearly at 40k kms in 1.5 years. I won't be ubering anymore so won't be wrecking my nice performance. Get license back in 17 days.

Yep, rear ended earlier this year. Not quite as bad but parts supply etc was fine. However, hopefully you have ‘choice of repairer’ on your insurance? Reason being is the usual ‘Johnny’s smash repairs’ didn’t put things back together properly that resulted in the V2L no longer working (find out during a power outage of course)….Took to local BYD Service Centre who confirmed as much, put things together correctly, including proper boot adjustment so it didn’t ‘clunk’ anymore and all was fine. BYD charged us like $360 and insurance happily paid it. Hot top - if your V2L doesn’t work after being repaired after a rear ender it could be the boot open/close sensor thinking you have the button permanently stuck down despite actually opening and closing fine.

Yeah, no real choice of repairer as apparently only one guy had capacity. Apparently SA drivers are just shit and crash a lot. He is a BYD approved repairer though, so at least that is in my favour......although apparently the repairs wont be booked in until late August for some reason......

Grimy81 2025-05-21 04:54

Yeah gotcha. Approved repairer certainly a good start, but late August, damn. We also had to tell them they missed a bit when they replaced the rear bumper - tow hitch cover was missing.. different part number and not included in the bumper.

Acrobatic-Syrup-21 2025-05-21 04:56

Lol. I'm a little confused as the repairer doesn't even have the car yet, let alone supplied a quote, so I may end up getting in quicker. At a guess he's given an estimate that may change.

Not rear ended, but someone ran into my back right hand side while I was parked on the street at work. Was an actual nightmare, but not really to do with BYD themselves. Ended up being written off because the frame where the motor sits was bent. The assessor was hopeless, barely looked at it and approved repair then wouldn't talk to the repairer again after it was deemed worse than initially thought. Took 5 months before I got my new car. Was in a kia EV6 for the duration. All in all it worked out OK. Replaced my 24 seal with a 25 seal and I'm happy. Insurance though... Not great. At least I wasn't out any cash at the end of the day.

Acrobatic-Syrup-21 2025-05-21 05:20

Yeah I'm kind of hoping that the damage is bad enough that they write it off as uneconomical to repair. My biggest fear is a dodgy repair that leaves me with a lemon or a bomb, especially given the lack of knowledge on issues with EV repairs.

r3volts 2025-05-21 05:44

Talking to the repairer, they needed to drop the battery out of mine and have it in a separate bay that was roped off, so it was taking up twice the space that an ICE with similar damage would have taken. It got to $45k in repairs very quickly, specifically because where the motor sits was damaged. The motor is below the boot towards the back seats, more or less directly in line with the rear wheels. If it's bent the pan the motor sits in, my anecdotal data set of one says it will probably be written off. Having a repairer that is byd certified is good, it sounded as though my repairers were talking to byd throughout the process and taking their guidance.

Yeah I'm hoping once they actually get it, it will be a different story. Fingers crossed

LoveUnites7 2025-05-21 07:50

yes we are waiting on our repair they say 4/7 but boot lid is not in the country and i bet you will be out of luck too (australia) they dont seem to have any kind of professional contingency or inventory for accidents BYD are only concerned with sales

LoveUnites7 2025-05-21 07:52

wont be write off still worth too much to replace ours is a little more damage repairs round $15K

Blacksmithau 2025-05-21 08:08

I did a few weeks ago. It took about 3 weeks for the smash repair to get the parts they needed (not sure exactly what they had to order). It was not as significant as this however.

cantbethatbadcanit 2025-05-21 10:27

5 months and did you get the Kia as hire car for that time for free??? Woah!

BeyondEV 2025-05-21 10:55

Yep! Did videos on the whole process and timeline as well. See below: [Part 1 - What now?](https://youtu.be/aNLVIysf6HU) [Part 2 - Repair Drop Off](https://youtu.be/QeWKZbxfalY) [Part 3 - Back on the road](https://youtu.be/EtQAiXOS-9I)

I had a feeling it wasn't going to be quick so I used an accident replacement company. They look at your case and if it's clear you are not at fault, as my case was being a legally parked car being run into while I wasnt even present, they provide you with a rental and go after the other sides insurance to cover it. All in all I paid for an alignment immediately after the crash, which was then covered by my insurance. End of the day it didn't cost me a dollar thankfully. Quick edit: insurance offered me $2k for rental. That wouldn't have gotten anywhere close to the time I needed.

Was the Kia EV6 a better car than the BYD?

r3volts 2025-05-25 05:25

Didn't like it at all. Was glad I got to drive it for an extended time, because I was considering buying one instead if the seal. Nothing really wrong with it though. Was just bigger and felt more like a traditional car whereas the seal has that nice zippy sporty feel. I'm probably biased because if the decision I ended up making, but I'm much happier driving the seal than I was the EV6

Thanks for the update.

Yeh by my uncle. He said it was a special secret game and I shouldn’t tell anyone about it.

My ex girlfriend got rear ended plenty of times

Excellent-Study-3890 2025-05-25 14:53

🤭🤣🤣Lmfao!🤣🤣🤣

SexyDraenei 2025-05-26 23:29

let me know if it does get written off. I'm keeping my eyes on the auctions for a rear damaged seal to do a ute conversion on :D

SexyDraenei 2025-05-26 23:30

> Was in a kia EV6 for the duration how did you like the EV6? Its a nice looking car, but didn't spark joy in me so never considered it. Edit: just saw your other comment.

So what happened to your car? Was it repaired or totalled? I am in a similar situation waiting for the damage/repair assessment… https://preview.redd.it/ap0y0s1y0l1g1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ef0e42c2b066ff4be175dab1aca12e97bdde86a7

Acrobatic-Syrup-21 2025-11-16 09:08

Turned out close to 30k in repairs, obviously boot, bumper, and the rear sill panel but also a beaver panel between the boot and the cabin. All paid and fixed under insurance. Parts didn't take as long as I expected, the delay of 8 or so weeks was the repairer not having space. Dropping the battery necessitates two bays taken up, and there aren't many BYD approved repairers in SA. Once I finally got it back, I haven't noticed any issues, been a pretty schmick repair job.

Apprehensive-Apple93 2025-11-16 09:21

thanks for replying promptly! Let's see what happens in my case..
