Charging and extension leads.

sproglobber | 2025-04-07 07:34 | 3 views

We are in a bit of a situation, our 25 seal will be ready to collect soon but we haven't organised a good charging set-up just yet. We have a 15amp outlet at our carport down the driveway, but we have a dodgy gate and an air con unit in the way. We will be getting an electric gate installed and the air con unit will be relocated, but this will take a few weeks. So... I've read extension leads might not handle the constant power draw when charging, I do have a 15amp lead which is heavier duty than a regular 10amp lead. Would it be OK to temporarily use this with the included granny charger without it overheating? Cheers! :)

The included charger with the car only draws 8A max. You’ll need to purchase an additional 3rd party charger if you want to charge at 15A.

If you've already got a sparky coming to do work, get a home charger installed (if within your budget). It does however need to be connected directly to the meter box.

Yeah that's the plan, just not sure if an extension lead will be OK to use

No sparky required as we already have an outlet at our carport.

It defs will over heat and u will also get loss. Even my Tesla charger heats. Can't u just install an ev charger or must u remove the aircond? *

The granny charger that comes with the car is only 2.3kw (10am) and this plugs into a standard power point, and would take >24hrs to fully charge a battery from 0%. The next step up is a Home Charger which is wired into the meter box (and needs to be done by a sparky), and charge at 7kw which would charge from 0-100% is approx 12 hours. There are 3phase ones which charge at 22kw but BYD is does support this (unless it has changed, I have Seal '24). Then up from this are the DC chargers/super chargers which are not for home. Legend, thanks for that :)

Air con is just in the way and needs to be relocated a little. The 15amp outlet will be fine and charge fast enough overnight, just can't access it temporarily.

I'm charging my seal with the supplied 10amp trickle charger. I'm using a heavy duty 5m exstension lead just to be safe, works a treat.

I was planning on taking advantage of our 15amp outlet as it's on its own dedicated circuit and it's located under our carport (was used to power a spa). Then I was going to use one of those aftermarket 15amp single phase chargers I've seen on ev supply stores, Amazon and even recently at aldi. Obviously not the best set up out there, but the charger should be all I need... The electric gate is going to set us back a bit already.

Thanks for that, I only need to do this for a few weeks but good to know it'll work.

Your 15 amp heavy duty lead will be fine to use with a 3.5kw charger or 2.4kw charger, just keep the plugs dry. I am an Electrician btw.

Thanks mate

sproglobber 2025-04-08 02:24

Cheers, yeah I have a few of those capsule things, will keep everything dry.

The reason I asked is because instead of installing a 15a connection, you can potentially install single phase 32a connection kinda like this to future proof. https://preview.redd.it/bgl63fwz4jte1.jpeg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c3385e0ae16ad231de6fa8069dd5a7edc148e26

sproglobber 2025-04-08 03:48

Yeah that's definitely an option at some stage. As the 15amp is already there we can take advantage of it, if it's not enough we could look at something like you pictured.

2niteshow 2025-04-08 11:17

If the 15amp is already there, why do u need an extension cord? How close can u get the car to the powerpoint?

sproglobber 2025-04-09 02:42

I can't get it close, just temporarily. It'll be 20m away.

2niteshow 2025-04-09 04:58

Ahh ok... only reason I ask is cos Tesla wall chargers have 7m of charge cable.

sproglobber 2025-04-09 06:05

Yeah I really need an extension cable for the next month or so, then I have access to the 15amp outlet. I just remember reading extension leads are a no-no as they can overheat or something

2niteshow 2025-04-09 10:33

I had my Tesla charger overheat at the plug. Just got it replaced under warranty not long ago. I was pumping out 7.4kW for the tesla model 3. Byd seal can only take around 6.4kW is. That extra 1kw made a big difference with charging times.
