Mirrors unfold when aircon is remotely started

TerryTowellinghat | 2025-03-22 03:13 | 2 views

Where is the logic in this? Could you imagine backing out of a carpark beside an unoccupied car that has its mirrors neatly folded in and then for no apparent reason and with no one else around the mirror suddenly unfolds into the path of your car. For what possible reason is it set up like this? Posting here in hope that someone who has input into future updates can flag it for change.

Like, I guess if you think about it heaps, it's a bit weird. But it doesn't really matter.

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-22 03:18

What if you were in the process of manouvering out of the carpark beside it when the mirrors came out?

Natecfg 2025-03-22 03:22

I'd be questioning how you managed to get your door open, let alone be able to get in the car, being within 3 inches of the side mirror.

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-22 03:26

Well if it makes no difference why bother having the mirrors fold on locking at all? It’s so people can more easily get around your vehicle. If having them unfold makes no difference why fold them?

red_dragin 2025-03-22 03:34

Probably has to do with the state of the car from a programming perspective. If power on + doors locked = mirrors open If power off + doors locked = mirrors closed If power on + doors unlocked = mirror open If power off + doors unlocked = mirrors open. The programming probably doesn't account for the car being remote started, it just goes 'I'm powered on, open the mirrors". BYD have taken on other suggestions, perhaps reach out to BYD Australia and see if they can get BYD China to fix it in a future update. Have you tried flicking the mirror closed button on the drivers door and seeing what outcome that produces?

Natecfg 2025-03-22 03:34

It probably does make a difference generally speaking. I'm just saying for that ten minutes your a pre-cooling or heating your car that it's probably not a big deal.

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-22 03:36

Apparently the problem gets fixed in update 1.3 which for some reason I still don’t have. I’m on 1.2.1 which is a bit disappointing since apparently 1.4 was released a couple of months ago in some markets. I can understand rolling updates, but having some markets be at least three updates ahead of others seems a bit weird. I’m going in for a service in a few weeks so I’ll see if they can update it.

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-22 03:41

Ok. It would definitely matter if you were in the process of reversing out, but if it doesn’t bother you that’s great. Good for you champ.

Natecfg 2025-03-22 03:42

Champ, nice.

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-22 03:44

I’m sure you’re right. After posting I found this post https://www.reddit.com/r/BYD/s/4eC88HMD00 in which one of the first commenters mentioned it is fixed in 1.3.

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-22 03:48

Well what’s the point of coming onto someone’s post to tell them that they shouldn’t be worried about it? If it doesn’t concern you move along. I think it’s a good way to get my wing mirror ripped off and scratch some innocent person’s car who could have sworn they were going to miss that mirror when they backed out.

I've never really thought of folding mirrors is to help others park next to you easier. I've thought of it more as to help when people walk between cars or when the open doors next to your car.

red_dragin 2025-03-22 04:00

Ah sweet. Mines still on 1.2 I think. Service due in about three months

MousyKinosternidae 2025-03-22 04:56

Nope, I'm on 1.4 and it still opens the mirrors when you turn the AC on. From memory I think the daytime running lights used to come on as well in earlier versions, which they have fixed. The DRLs do come on once you unlock it and get in, so presumably they could use the same software trigger that turns the lights on to open the mirrors.

Psychlonuclear 2025-03-22 05:49

It needs a stealth mode when you switch on the remote AC. No lights, no mirror unfolding, and definitely no screens switching on. That's just an invite to ferals to break a window because they think they can steal the car.

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-22 06:25

Exactly right. There is no need for anything else to happen but for the aircon to turn on. It really does make it look like someone just got out and walked away. A dodgy person in an otherwise empty carpark could easily be tempted to try to get in and at least scratch up the area around the handles trying to open the door.

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-22 06:27

Boo. The comment by u/firedragin6 in the post I linked elsewhere here says that it was fixed post 1.3. Hopefully they didn’t roll it back again in 1.4 for reason? Also, are you in Australia with the 1.4 update? Why is mine so late? I’d better get fully updated at my 20k service.

shadjor 2025-03-22 06:59

Imagine you are trying to squeeze between cars and you suddenly get sexually assaulted by a seal. But seriously I’d be more worried if someone is getting into their car and the mirror pops out and either hits their door or is in the way so they can’t close a door.

MousyKinosternidae 2025-03-22 08:18

Australia is still on v1.2.1 afaik, there's Telegram groups around where people post updated IVI firmware you can install with a USB (probably leaked by dealership techs I suspect). Possibly could be another module that gets upgraded as part of the OTA update (the USB file only updates the IVI itself) so might get fixed once v1.3.1 is officially available in Aus based on the comments in that other thread. It still happened after updating the IVI to v1.3.1 to me (before v1.4 was out) They won't update you to v1.3 at the dealership until it's officially available  in Aus (at that time it should be available OTA as well)

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-22 09:12

Ah well. Cheers for the info. At least they might be able to work out why I have to walk back and forth from the hood release button to the hood half a dozen times if I ever want to get my cables out. It’s a beautiful car to look at, sit in and drive but jeez it’s got some quirks.

Grizzly_Man11 2025-03-23 08:27

I'm on 1.3 (in the EU) and it still unfolds the mirror etc when climate is remotely activated.

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-23 08:41

Another poster said it still happens on 1.4 too.

Wildpig953 2025-03-24 03:46

A visible indication the car is on. Quite obvious really

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-24 09:14

Sorry? Are you saying the mirrors should come out so you know the car is on? The app tells you it is started and will turn off in the assigned time.

not4uexeptontuesday 2025-03-24 10:14

Are you pulling the lever twice? Seems a stupid feature but I guess it's a safety thing since there's no manual release under the hood but needs to be pulled twice to fully release the bonnet.

I’m not at all mate, but I despair that I can’t even ask a simple question, which in my opinion is a valid criticism worthy of at least consideration, without dickheads dickheading.

I am. I just did a test now and tbh it was a better result than I remember getting in previous experiences. 1 pull: big clunk. Second pull, no noise at all. Check bonnet: won’t open. Third pull tiny clunk. Check bonnet: it now opens. I tried three and four pulls initially and it didn’t make a difference. The best result was two pulls, walk to the front, walk of shame for a third pull, and it opened. This happened three times in a row, and these are the best results I remember getting, while I still would look to an observer like someone who doesn’t know how to open their bonnet. I’m sure in the past I have had to walk back to the lever at least once more and on occasion even more than that.

Just an update: Seal 2025, start aircon remotely and mirrors stay closed.
