Home Charger Recommendations

Professional-Snow380 | 2025-03-17 04:44 | 8 views

Hi all, just took delivery of my BYD seal last weekend and was wondering if anyone had recommendations for a single phase home charger (7kW), I am currently looking at the tesla one but open to others. I am also looking for electricians who install home chargers in Sydney if anyone could recommend me someone they had a good experience with. Thanks!!

I looks into lots and the later generation Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3 seemed to be the best option to me. Cheapest and the longest cable which was important to me. Just be careful as some cheap installers do a less attractive install. I wish I paid a little extra for a more reputable installer rather than just the cheapest one out there. I have the Premium and travel 150km a day for work. It takes about 30% of the charge and recharges in about 4 hours each night during the cheap rates. If you are regularly travelling less than this the granny charger supplied with the vehicle might be sufficient (supplementing with a fast charge sporadically) depending on your electricity rates. charing in this instance would take me 12 hours a day using the granny charger. I did this for the first month until I got mine installed but I much prefer the convenience to charge at 8c overnight and leave with 100% everyday.

I've also just booked to have the Gen 3 Tesla charger installed for my Seal (which I am hoping is delivered soon), when did you order your car if you don't mind me asking and where are you based?

I went with the Tesla charger because my house is on a slope so I go nose in. I needed the 7m cable to be able to reach the charger port comfortably from the front of the garage.

Ohme, WallBox, Zappi are 3 good options

Love my Zappi

Professional-Snow380 2025-03-17 07:03

I’m Sydney based and ordered at the very end of Jan, was actually able to take a delivery the week before.

Thanks! I ordered late Feb, so hopefully being about a month behind you, I'll be within the next month.

We have a Zappi, functionality wise it has been great. Most of the time we just set it to fast charge and whatever solar goes in is a bonus. I’ve been lazy lately and just charging overnight on the weekend

I went with a Fronius Wattpilot. It had good reviews and made sense as it’s the same brand as my solar inverter so no compatibility issues.

I got the Tesla. Purchased and installed through revcharge

Don't forget to claim the government's $0.042c per km EV home charging tax offset for home charging costs.

Professional-Snow380 2025-03-17 10:21

Would you mind sharing how much it was through rev charge?

jayare1987 2025-03-17 10:26

I think the charger was about 700 and installation was 800 or so. Single level home and about 10-15m of cable to the fuse box.

I’m always trying to buy local, but there isn’t an Australian EV charger brand that I’m aware of. So I’m going to give [evnex](https://www.evnex.com/au/collections/ev-chargers) a go - they’re a New Zealand company [Ecotricity did a review](https://youtu.be/257xoc0YBXQ?si=iEfHViYYr5ySnSWY) on their charger about a year ago. Yes it’s a bit more spency, but it looks worthwhile.

Tesla Gen 3 - cheapest out of the known brands, widely stocked by installers, does the job.

u/Professional-Snow380, when/where did you order your Seal? I've been waiting for 3 months.

Professional-Snow380 2025-03-18 03:39

Ordered end of Jan and got allocation mid-late Feb and was available for delivery early-mid March. I’m Sydney based, hope that helps.

Zappi

If you're running Fronius inverters, the Fronius WattPilot Go works well for me and my Seal to charge with solar surplus only. You can wire in a 32amp industrial socket and plug it in. I haven't needed to yet, but a bonus is that it's portable and you could use it to charge at caravan parks or showgrounds for example, if they had industrial 5pin sockets available. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvF5_Zj-xjQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsJbvDVxTXg

I have the Wallbox Pulsar Plus for my BYD Seal Premium (82.4kwh LFP). Despite the robustness of the chemistry, I am conservative - so when my battery goes below 30% I plug it in and it is scheduled on the app (not the car) to charge through the entire off peak (12-6, AGL, 8c per kWh). If I forget to plug in, I still have ~180km to see me through. That 6 hours overnight gets me an additional 50% (7.2 kWh out to the box, with the car taking up 6.3kWh) and I just plug it in again when it drops below 30% again - so I charge about once a week as I live in metro Melbourne (Or three times in a fortnight if I've been dipping into sports mode for a bit of fun which I like to do). If I am planning a trip away I just charge 2 nights in a row - with a total charge costing just $11.54 😂 I have Evie and Tesla apps on my phone for the longer highway runs - with the Evie 'plug in and walk away' feature super convenient. Phone stays in the pocket. The app is great, future proofed for a home battery and VTG etc... and the scheduling is flexible and reliable. Hope this helps.

more info on this? is this for NL only?

RedditAussie 2025-03-23 19:26

Nope... It's the government's strategy for reimbursing ev home charging costs, and is available to all. For me, I charge for free when charging on the AGL 8c rate.

lynx20 2025-03-23 19:27

Can you send a link I can’t find anything on it? Thanks

RedditAussie 2025-03-23 19:54

https://community.ato.gov.au/s/question/a0JRF000000Hq3p/p00260122 Actually, this might only be available for ev's on lease.

lynx20 2025-03-24 01:40

Yeah pretty sure it’s on a novated lease

Cautious_Put2833 2025-03-29 05:15

I have an Evnex X7 installed in my Garage.  It's a 7.4 kw single phase charger with three phase monitoring.  SND Electrical in Sydney did a great job installing it.
