Wait time for parts for accident repair

poshy | 2024-10-30 03:37 | 8 views

I got hit at a roundabout this weekend in my Seal Dynamic by an older driver who "just didn't see me". Smashed the passenger side bumper and damaged the suspension. I'm trying to remain zen about it all, but driving the hire car MG4 is nowhere near as nice as the Seal. I've just got a call from the body shop and they said that it's about a 10 week wait time for BYD parts as they have to come from China. Has anyone else gone through this and can confirm that these are indeed the wait times? Any tricks for speeding this up? I was going to ask to see if we can get the necessary parts flown in, as this should be all covered by insurance. As a note, I'm in Perth, so not sure if there's any difference between east & west coast in Aus.

We had 7 weeks between starting the insurance claim and repairs starting (east coast, front side panel), but 3 weeks of that was my insurer sending me to a repairer that ddint touch EVs.

Feel like this is something BYD Australia aka not BYD but their agent should do better in to support the brand in stocking and selling spares. On a flipside, maybe there is a business opportunity there as more BYD cars are on the road and thus more repair needs? I had faulty lemon Seal from first batch in to Aus December, and they wanted me to wait on parts. I forced the issue and got a new car, but found out the parts didn't arrive for 4 months.

Well, 4 weeks to get parts is a lot more enticing than 10 weeks. I can imagine waiting 3 weeks just to get the repairer sorted would have tested your patience.

Agreed, that it's pretty ridiculous that it's nearly a 3 month wait to get the car repaired. I'm almost hoping that there's a crack on the battery and we can just write it off and get a new one. Once the final quotes come in, I'm going to start pushing on the insurer to resolve it quicker because I don't like the idea of paying a lease for 3 months to drive a different car.

In Perth as well and advised that it is 9 weeks for replacement part. I found the part I need and can get it in 10 days but have to wait for their supply chain to deliver.

Wow, that's...annoying. I hope that this replacement part logistics gets sorted sooner rather than later by BYD Australia.

Parts supply for ICE vehicles and EVs is a mess. All new cars have issues. Euros have been traditionally slow and now we have a large block of cars from China. Importers need to be punished when there is a delay and most don't care as they just represent the brand. Is this a consumer protection issue?

Another car hit my rear left hand side at a parking lot in July. Sustained panel damage and a cracked tail light. The repairer was able to get new parts in under two weeks and the repair took 4 days. I live in Perth also and the damage appears relatively minor compared to yours and the car was still drivable. When quoting, the repairer said it could be up to a couple of months or more to source parts but he had never repaired a BYD previously. He was surprised they arrived quickly. I imagine the speed of supply depends on which parts are needed.

Well that’s nice to hear, gives me a bit of hope. Thanks!

If you're not at fault then you can have the hire for as long as yours is fixed or you get payment. The other party's insurance will pay.

Tone_Beginning 2024-10-30 08:55

I hope it works out well for you.

poshy 2024-10-30 08:55

Yes, that's true and ultimately it's a first world problem. But just annoying to be driving a budget hire car for months when I'm paying a lease on a much nicer car.

As a new BYD owner I'm curious. If the other driver was close enough to hit you then why didn't the safety features like emergency braking g/cross traffic etc kick it seeing I'm currently experiencing the 'Phantom' braking while it teaches itself.

I was hit as I was turning right through a 3 way roundabout, so the angle was from a bit behind the left. I can't say I remember the safety system kicking in, but it would've been too late to stop the car anyways. The Seal did automatically turn on the hazards afterwards, and I honestly hardly felt the impact despite the damage. I'm quite happy with the safety in that regard, absolutely no injuries for myself or passengers.

Can you push them on the hire car? Get something nicer?

poshy 2024-10-31 01:43

Doubt I can do much as there aren't many vehicle types available from the rental agency, but always worth a shot. Cheers!

I had a friend stuck in limbo for awhile because the driver at fault's insurance refused to honour the agreed value of his lifted Prado. After a few months he told them he was not happy with the RAV4 and he sorted a VW Tiguan for himself and sent them the bill. Probably depends on your insurer how well that would go over but it might be an option. Don't know if you don't ask.

poshy 2024-10-31 02:46

That's very good to know, as driving a Model 3 or Atto 3 for a few months would make this much more palatable. Thanks mate!

16 weeks for rear boot lid. NSW.

mooksyNZ 2025-04-04 20:11

Just out of interest poshy, have you had your car repaired and how long did it all take in the end? Cheers

poshy 2025-04-05 02:40

Yea, just got it back 2 weeks ago. Just under 5 months total, I’m still pretty salty about it tbh. Apparently the major holdup was waiting for the suspension parts, the bodywork came in pretty quickly (relatively). Car is great though, can’t tell it was in an accident at all.

mooksyNZ 2025-04-05 04:29

That's somewhat good to hear. Hope you can put that all behind you since it looks mint again! 1week out the dealership and I reversed in the dark relying on the quite shite reversing camera of my byd SL6 it didn't pickup my leaning tree and by the time I looked up id bent my wing mirror so badly it's stuck facing forward. It's all my fault for overly relying on the tech. Only thing now is how long the new wing mirror will take to arrive in NZ from the slow boat from China. 🤔 What do you reckon?

poshy 2025-04-05 07:31

Ooof, that sucks. No idea what wait times are like for NZ, but I’ve heard repeatedly that it’s 12-16 weeks for parts in Western Australia. Good luck with it, hope it’s faster than mine!

Absolutely understand the frustration here. One thing that's helped me (and a couple of friends who drive BYDs) is ordering parts online, especially for bits that are hard to find locally or take ages through official channels. I recently came across partsfinds—they focus on Chinese car parts and have a pretty extensive catalog. What really surprised me was that shipping to Australia took just about two weeks. Could be worth checking out if you're stuck waiting or can't find something specific through your panel beater or BYD direct!
