Considering purchasing - have some concerns

RandomMagnet | 2024-08-06 08:15 | 10 views

Hi Guys, I test drove a Seal yesterday and was fairly impressed, I am considering purchasing, but have been reading up on some of the nuances that the Seal has (or had as the case maybe). Is the ADAS problem solved? aka https://www.reddit.com/r/BYD/comments/1av47to/update_on_previous_post_re_ancap_and_broken_adas/ Are there any other annoying safety systems that cant be perm disabled? We currently drive a Camry and part of the reason I am looking at changing is because its overly aggresive anti collision system false alerts too often... Sorry for the somewhat open question, but with the OTA updates that EV's have, it seems like problems on release are quickly solved (and or freshly introduced). Thanks in advance.

Issues have been resolved

Can also confirm, your qualms are addressed. As for ownership, you won’t regret it. My partner who is not a huge tech fan went from a newish Kia to the Seal and will never go back. Loves it.

My suspicion is many people are experiencing these systems for the first time, and their driving style doesn't go well with staying in the lane, not getting close to other vehicles (I rode once in a Hyundai with similar tech, with a friend driving like that, never again!) Personally I've come from a late model Kia, so I'm used to it. I have had cross traffic beeps approaching roundabouts, never intervention from the car. I find the self steer lane keeping a bit obsessive about being perfectly centre, can feel/see the steering wheel constantly moving minute' amounts, this only occurs on the highway, under 100 it seems fine. I've had two instances where the same system got the wobbles up, whilst passing a truck on a left hand curve at night. I suspect it tries to curve left, freaks out about the truck, moves right, then goes close to the edge line, goes back left etc. In this uncommon situation, I change lanes or switch it off to pass the truck.

Hey, I switched from a dual cab ute to a seal performance a few weeks ago. I'm not camping at all these days and I couldn't pass up the tax benefits of the novated lease. I was going to get a tesla but my old man drove one of the seals overseas and rated it. I've had to drive camrys/ hiluxes and prados for work so I understand about the overbearing safety features. However I've thoroughly enjoyed the performance. I drove it from Brisbane back up to Rockhampton where I live. Not to mention scooting around Brisbane a bit to catch up with friends. I've put about 1000kms on it and i gotta say the safety features haven't bothered me at all. I was concerned but the update seems to have hit the nail on the head.

Thanks! We need to take it for another drive, it was quite busy traffic when we took it - need a bit more open road testing time :)

Thx!

I dont mind the audio warnings (except for annoying speed alerts, which has been resolved) - its the "I am about to give you whiplash because I think your going to crash" stuff thats problematic... As long as you can permanently turn off most of those systems then im good... I dont care about lane keeping, I know how to drive ... and I feel like those systems are for people that arn't interested in paying attention to the road, which is IMHO a bit weird...

Thats good to hear... I am probably going to try and lease it as well... the FBT excemption is pretty compelling...

Author of that post you referenced here - yes it's been resolved to the point that I no longer have to disable anything every journey.  It's far, far better than it was at launch.

Important to note that most of the warning systems can't be permanently disabled, and switch back on next trip Source: own one

Lane keeping is great at 3am after a nine hour shift on day 11 straight. But it's not active unless the cruise is on, it's just the little nudge if you drift too close to the lane edge is always on.

Not only are the ADAS features features all toned down, the sounds can be turned off and stay off on restart, but also they just added digital keys too! I can now use my apple watch or phone to get in the car and run to the shops quickly instead of grabbing everything to leave the house. The updates have been great and Im not even sure what they could add next to improve things.

I've had my BYD for about 3500kms. The queries safety features mentioned aren't really an issue that has affected my driving. Just other niggly things that I have noticed (none deal breakers imo) - in case it helps: 1. If the car is unlocked, keys on you, and you just want to open the handles, you'll lock the car then unlock before you can open the handles. (Pushing the button locks first). 2. The premium is unlikely to ever really get 650km. More like 550km I think - even on Eco mode 3. The child detection thing is REALLY annoying. I pull up for a meeting, sit in the car for 15 mins if I'm early, and forget about the child detection alarm until it goes off loudly! You can't permanently turn it off but have to remember to do it each time 4. The "you're about to hit something" beeping never does the flatline beep, like nearly every other car I've driven. It's most escalated is fast beeps, which in every other car says "nearly hitting something". 5. Saved seat positions are great - except you can't use them when you're driving. That's a bit silly to me. You can move the seat, even navigate to the correct page while driving, but not actually choose the saved position until you stop. Having said that, the car is amazing, drives so nicely and the new digital key is fantastic. We are glad we purchased it, and love never paying for fuel.

Are you aware of the facelift model that supposedly will hit our shores by the end of the year?

RandomMagnet 2024-08-06 13:53

thanks for this... I did see that BYD were underperforming on real world range tests, im not sure it really matters (to me). the child thing is interesting? is that just to make sure you dont leave a kid in the car? based on an occupancy sensor or whatever (like the arming of the airbags)

RandomMagnet 2024-08-06 13:53

thankyou sir!

RandomMagnet 2024-08-06 13:54

No I wasn't, I did ask if MY25 had any changes in store, but the "sales guy" said no... lol i shall look it up :)

Techbotfarm 2024-08-06 22:00

That's my understanding - no child accidentally locked in a hot car. Definitely a good idea, except when the only person in the car is the driver (which is unlikely to be a child...)

WillVee454 2024-08-07 01:11

No chance it gets to Aus by end of the year. Was only released in China last week.

RandomMagnet 2024-08-07 07:19

What if you leave the car unlocked? Does the alarm sound after 15 mins?

Numerous-Implement47 2024-08-09 00:45

Also only happens if you turn off the car, if I'm stating in car I just don't turn it off, as not like an ice vehicle with fumes etc. Uses minimal power

Hi whats the novated lease tax benefit?

JD38s 2024-08-13 22:34

They can now after the latest OTA update.

JD38s 2024-08-13 22:38

Drive away price on Performance just dropped $7k due to new model. Sources say end of this calendar year. I’ve gone haas with current model performance brand new drive away $65k AUD dropped from $72,500. New model exterior is identical - new charging capabilities and some cool interior changes.

Ryuj1nn 2024-08-16 09:54

Hi mate, just letting you know that a refreshed 2025 model is on its way with a new interior & better technology.
