Would you like to see this BYD model in the UK?

I saw one in the flesh at a BYD drive day they organised just out of Brisbane. They booked a driver training facility and let you drive most of the BYD range around the closed circuit or put you in with a tame race driver for some more spirited driving. Unfortunately U9 wasn't on the list. I got in Ok, but for a 6'4" gentleman with shot knees that is used to sliding out of a 4x4 straight into the standing position, this thing was a struggle to get out of gracefully. I think I'll stick with my Shark.

An 80 kWh blade pack, albeit a little bit more special than that found on BYD’s regular cars Also, it’s not just a straight line wonder. It did a a fantastic time around the Nordschleife track in the Nürburgring in Germany (one of the most difficult tracks in the world). Just under 3,000hp. A truly amazing (and beautiful) car. Autos & Vehicles Well said. The LFP Blade pack is really what makes it impressive especially at that capacity. BYD has done a great job proving that LFP doesn’t have to mean “boring” or limited. The Nürburgring result surprised a lot of people too. It definitely showed this isn’t just a straight-line showcase car, but something properly engineered. If similar support ever applied to performance variants or future UK releases, it could change the conversation quite a bit. Either way, it’s a strong statement of where BYD is heading technically.

The U9 definitely isn’t the most practical car to get in and out of, especially if you’re used to something like a Shark or a 4x4 with a higher ride height. It’s clearly more of a statement / showcase model than an everyday solution. What’s interesting though is that BYD seems to be leaning heavily into owner incentives and special offers across other models lately giveaways, cashback, drive-day access, etc. It’s very much about getting more people into ownership rather than just showing off halo cars. For most people, models like the Shark probably make far more sense day-to-day, but it’s good to see BYD covering both ends of the spectrum.

It’s one of those halo cars that shows what BYD can do, even if it’s not realistically attainable for most buyers. That said, it’s interesting how BYD is actively using incentives, cashback and even giveaways on other models to lower the barrier to ownership. The idea seems to be: show the tech at the top end, then make the everyday models more accessible. If that approach continues in the UK, it could bring a lot more people into BYD ownership without needing U9-level budgets. Autos & Vehicles
