Dashcam installation question

TerryTowellinghat | 2024-05-07 02:49 | 7 views

Can anyone who has bought the dashcam from TopBYD tell me if I need to get the harness as well or is the necessary wiring already there? It is another $45, but in the installation video I’ve watched I’m sure the wiring was already there waiting to be connected.

I took off the plastic cover on mine to check if the harness is there before I ordered. It's tucked away and taped so it doesn't rattle.

Was already there for me also. Hopefully they haven't changed that in later shipments as that would suck. Do yourself a favour and buy set of plastic tools for removing cover from Supercheap as the one the included was rubbish.

TerryTowellinghat 2024-05-07 07:25

I had read that in a few reviews. Good advice.

TerryTowellinghat 2024-05-07 07:26

Thanks all. I’m not getting the car until next Friday, but there’s probably no harm in ordering just the camera and ordering the harness separately if something has changed.

CodeRevolutionary240 2024-05-07 13:21

Can almost guarantee the harness is already there. No stress.

TerryTowellinghat 2024-05-07 22:28

I hadn’t worried in the slightest until I went to place the order and the harness was sold as prominently as the camera itself. Maybe certain models or markets came without the harness.

they list the harness as the first item because its cheaper and makes you click on it.

Resurrecting this thread. It seems from comments that the cable is there. Expecting my Seal in coming week or so. Has anyone found the cable to be missing?

TerryTowellinghat 2024-07-21 13:31

Sorry if I didn’t report back. The cable was indeed there. The only hassle was that the pry tool supplied with the camera was fragile garbage that broke off twice in trying to prise the housing off. I went to Supacheap for some surprisingly expensive pry tools, returned from the carpark to borrow a pair of scissors to remove the adhesive wrap that held the necessary jack hostage and after a quick reboot the camera was working great. On inspecting the footage I realised I hadn’t fully seated the camera leaving a shadow surrounding the footage. I popped the housing back off (thereby halving the cost/use of the pry tools, yay) and all was good. The quality of the footage isn’t quite as good as the Viofo A129 I had used previously, but above average, and it includes telemetry like how hard I am accelerating or braking etc. The interface is crap though and saving the data is awkward and perhaps impossible so if you need to keep something you will probably need to get it off the sd card quickly. Well worth the minimal cost. The picture shows both ends of the supplied pry tool snapped off. Insert it only the bare minimum and you might be able to avoid breakage. https://preview.redd.it/fbk83th3jvdd1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cebf9f465f9895baf3d988f37154a0d14604204a

Hey, just got our BYD Seal 2025 today and have been reading other forums saying that the wiring harness for the dash cam is no longer there. Damn! Noticed this panel and removed it to reveal a USB port. Has anyone used this? What are the specs. Obviously ideal to power a regular dash cam. https://preview.redd.it/0d9a9js1zkre1.jpeg?width=1586&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d9b312494ea6c556f8d7dc191ecd84d6070f07f9

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-29 07:35

That actually sounds ideal. I put the OEM cam in and except for being able to view videos on the infotainment system it is hugely inferior to the Viofo cam I have in my other car. Headlights at night just show iup as a huge while patch on the screen obscuring almost the whole car, and it doesn’t record sound. For both you will need to take the SD card out to get the footage off but for the Viofo it is right in the camera on the windscreen whereas for the Seal you need to basically kneel if the ground beside the car. I’ve never found a simple way to remove it. If there is a USB socket in there where you can plug in a camera really easily with a short cable rather than running it around behind your trim to a 12v adapter like I had to on my other car.

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-29 07:36

I only just took a look at your photo. The port is on the outside so that’s even better! I’m jealous.

evanxm 2025-03-29 10:56

I just tested it with a USB led light, it’s always on even when the car is locked. I’m going to try and find a DashCam that has a low power mode, hopefully it will only operate when moving.

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-29 17:45

That sounds great. I believe the Seal will recharge the 12V as required from the main battery as required, so it should be safe to leave a camera with a sentry mode plugged in. Keep us posted!

Not good news on the USB port behind the mirror. Not enough power for a dash cam. I tried a [Vantrue E1 Pro](https://www.amazon.com.au/Vantrue-E1-Pro-Recorder-Buffered/dp/B0DSKXJV3H/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?adgrpid=131013911473&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.a9vBk7BmZX0Kz6JQaS2sOfnD9tUuK76Z46_tcADDfJIrXmpR3AoWQHK9VQ_UNQ4s1k1duHQrwodNfd8h_qIKZyYcHU_ZbeOFkX0zC01XUNG4oO9nnix2rhJbTm1GjpL4c4RHVmcSy_suXbVo4g1g6aFnYnCaROtlzVdwq6Oo3flfBoJoGkZkdzp0GupO6Q7CVoPTwexp_mz-8v1d2ZiENAETjL0tif7fyLML1ur-qEwI7WmX_WLpVXfILP48A-nAwNT2Yxy9h7QN_4b-lqqpqePqMCRRoSQV6-5txJfvj6c.WNNNYt7q1O1uf0LSJ7_4TbA1HpQPf0zIYmMMLGF6ShU&dib_tag=se&hvadid=591137168525&hvdev=t&hvlocphy=9071378&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=12709854638161764142&hvtargid=kwd-2105555503821&hydadcr=20015_353163&keywords=vantrue+e1+pro&mcid=91cf81823a8d33dfbe891e019f6a1148&qid=1743753834&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1)

Anyone know of a reputable installer for the BYD Seal in the Melbourne Eastern Suburbs area (+/- 40km)? Have the 2025 model and just like you probably very disappointed. BYD service centres don't seem to have any idea either on how to do this. Contacted 3 and all are responding with the "call you back". One needed a Youtube link for the tech that I received from TOPBYD and I am still waiting.

Anyone know any reputable dash cam installion for Seal in Sydney? Maxxia is quoting me $1536 for installation both front and rear and im not sure if that's the right price

TerryTowellinghat 2026-03-04 11:31

Mine was purpose built and bought from TopBYD. It was cheap and easy to install, but the quality is bad compared to the good aftermarket options like Viofo cameras. They do show telemetry though (indicators, accelerator/brake) but the old Viofo camera I have fitted to my old ICE car gives a picture quality that is in a different league to the BYD camera. The cost is probably a bit more than the BYD ready camera, but the BYD camera is so cheap there is no reason not to have it (you also need a good quality sdcard, but this is true of any option). A Viofo camera isn’t hard to install but I haven’t specifically looked into it. At worst it comes down to shoving cables down behind pieces of trim.

edisonlau 2026-03-04 13:27

I am reading that some of the byd models doesn't come with wires (if I am understanding it correctly) which makes it less straightforward to install rather than just a plug and play I just signed a new Byd seal dynamic... Do you think I might be missing the cables?

TerryTowellinghat 2026-03-05 09:52

Mine is 2024, and I understand because I had the same reservations. To be honest, I’d just order it and then open up the casing because it is “probably” there and even if it isn’t the camera cost me like 80AUD and I’d pay that amount to avoid having to pry the housing off my new windscreen twice. It is scary and I quickly gave up on the tools supplied with mine and bought a reasonably cheap set of plastic trim removal tools locally. Everything worked out great. If some dude offered the option of doing it again, or giving him $80, I’d pay the $80 every time. To be honest I’d probably be a bit salty about it, and sadly I can only imagine that it would end with either a final portion of my life tainted by the inescapable funk of failure, or with the death of either, or both, my interlocutor and or indeed or me. The real tragedy is that I don’t even know why he got involved. Why did he have to get involved? Maybe he should have been the one to apologise to his kids for his rash actions. To the point, the camera I have is valuable only for the telemtry, because the picture, especially at night, is gaaaarbage compared to a Viofo which cost probably just a bit more than the price of this, but doesn’t connect to the already pretty basic BYD icc or whatever they call it. You’ll still need to fiddle about with a usb card if you need to use the footage either way. So to sum up, just buy it, it’s cheap, it “works”, picture is shit with no sound, sooooo.
