I do these calculations for a job. It's not great. Generally public charging is more expensive than petrol, but this depends on the deals you are getting from your energy providers. For Joe Public, home charging is cheaper, especially if you have solar or cheap power when you can charge your vehicle. Then diesel, then petrol, then public charging.
And when i say cheaper, generally home charging is close to 40-50% cheaper to operate than petrol or diesel.
Hmm, I generally pay ~$75 for a full fast charge at servo’s for my BYD sea lion 7 premium (0-100%) At slow chargers at shopping centres it’s half that. For home charging, I’ve been told it depends on time of day but roughly $8-$10. I dunno where importantpapaya above got facts about public charging costing more than fuel…
Depends on the vehicle. Sealion 7 is like 20kw/h per 100km. Public charging varies, but 60c per kWh is a price I’ve commonly encountered. So $12 to travel 100km. A smaller, lighter EV is obviously much cheaper. My 4WD uses about 12L diesel per 100km, diesel is currently $2.50 per L at my local…. So $30 to travel 100km. A smaller SUV/crossover similar to the Sealion 7 (like an Outlander) is about 8L/100km, at a normal fuel price of like $1.80L, you’re looking at about $15 to travel 100KM. City vs highway driving makes a big difference (fuel gets better economy on highway, EV gets better economy in town).
Yeah, my bad. Read the word commercial and assumed commercial fuel pricing too. Large companies i've worked with have negotiated deals that are around $1/litre off market pricing.
My Hyundai Tuscon costs $22/100km @ $2.15. My BYD Atto 3 costs $12/100km on the Ultra-Fast DC charger @ $0.8/kWh. Using the Synergy EV plan it costs $3.15/100km to charge overnight.
Fast charging more expensive than fuel, I'd like to see the numbers behind that claim.
I have got about 200k of mixed ev driving under my belt. Worst i have seen would have been same cost as 6Liters per hundred kms. So still cheaper than fossil fuels in most situations.
I can believe that there could be a particularly inefficient EV, maybe dragging a caravan but saying "generally more expensive" doesn't seem right. I know BYD batteries have lower energy density. The most expensive fast charger I've seen was .6/kWh. 99% of my 50000km of EV charging has been solar or overnight home charging so I don't know.
