Tesla home charger

forfucksakewhatnow | 2026-03-02 10:42 | 12 views

So my first EV (Sealion 7) arrives later this week and I'm planning for how I'm going to charge it at home. I dont have a garage so my car will be parked in my driveway, about 20m from the closest power outlet. No solar either so I'll need to consider charging during off peak (12-6am). I spoke to an electrician about putting in a 15A outdoor power point at the front of the house. He suggested I'd be better off getting a Tesla charger for the cost, as the labour would be virtually the same thing. My question is, does anyone here use a Tesla Gen3 wall charger for their BYD, and if so are there any issues I should be aware of? Would you recommend any other charger around the same price (~$800)?

Also getting a BYD and have already had the 15A in outlet installed. Sparky made sure cable was enough for 32A should I upgrade to Type2 later. Still in two minds on since 15A with a solar energy plan charging from midnight to 6am should be enough for everyday commuting. I’d also looked at an Enphase charger but they’re $$ and hard to come by.

I started a conversation with EVNEX when I got my byd. They can advise, supply and fit a charger. If like me you've just made the switch away from petrol, there's quite a bit to learn. I'd start there.

I’m not an expert but do you have a carport? How well are the connections protected for rain?

Front porch has a veranda which is somewhat sheltered from the rain. According to the electrician it's rated for outdoor installation.

I just had an EVNEX E2 Flex installed with a BYD Sealion 7. Couldnt be happier, great app and works well with the car. I don't have solar so have it scheduled to charge between 12-6am. I ordered and got the installation direct from EVNEX. They asked about roof access, photos of install location and the switchboard. Then got their local contractor to come out and install and did a brilliant job.

How much?

A 15A would only get you 3.3Kwh, the wall charger would be 32A 7Kwh. You can get wall chargers from Bunnings, and there’s cheaper options than Tesla ones. You’d need to buy a faster portable cable if you went the 15A option, or for an extra couple of hundred you double your speed and probably something you’d end up doing in the future anyway.

The charger itself was $799 the install was $850 as I was having it installed away from my switchboard. I believe if you have it installed close to the switchboard it will be much cheaper.

Second a recommendation for the Evnex E2 Flex - it’s the same price as the Tesla charger, but it has unlockable features if you get solar down the road and it also has load-balancing so it can lower output when you’re drawing more to prevent your breakers flipping. My mate with his Tesla and Tesla charger has blown fuses when trying to run the kettle while charging his car for example. My actual install was about $1.5k though because they had to run cable from one side of a long house all the way to the other. It’ll be much cheaper if your switchboard is closer to where the charger will terminate.

It works with other EVs. Within the app, you enable ‘use with any EV vehicle’ I charge a non Tesla vehicle upto 22kwh with no problems Edit: missing a word

Was your switchboard good to go? Or did it need some upgrades? My switchboard is full of RCDs and there is no room left. I got quoted around $2500 (including the E2 Flex) for a double story, with the garage around 20m away. Most other sparkies have said I'd need to replace some RCDs with RCBOs to make room, but Evnex said I don't need that.

Excellent. Thank you.

The electrician said that I “should” upgrade some of my switchboard. Optional but I did it.

I have purchased a Evnex E2 Plus was installed the day the new Byd Atto 2 arrived. perfect timing! Works. Well with the car,.the switch box is at the front of the house, they had to have a long cable through the roof to the back. The local sparkie also suggested to upgrade the switch box. Many steps involved including getting the electrical company out .. the charger is working well with the car!

Sounds like mate's electrician did it on the cheap. Mine had to upgrade the inside fuse box.

I don’t understand what this means. 3.3kWh in.. an hour? So in two hours you’d get 6.6kWh and in 6h you’d get.. ~20kWh. 🤷🏾

This! I also have one and it’s mounted outside in the weather. Can’t be happier with it.

Thanks for this recommendation. Looks like the best option.
