BYD Sealion 7 Center Console/Screen

Hi all, this is a long one, so thanks in advance if you read through it. My dad has worked hard his entire life, and I wanted to thank him by buying him a new car. I initially booked the Model Y AWD from Tesla because I liked the idea of having AWD for myself to enjoy occasionally. I placed the order before test drives were available in Cairns. When test drives finally opened up, I took Dad along. He genuinely was not impressed. So we started looking elsewhere. We then test drove the BYD Sealion 7 Performance, and that completely changed things. The speed, the comfort, and the overall driving feel were on a different level. It felt like a proper, solid car. I had some hesitation about Chinese reliability at first, but after reading multiple reviews and articles suggesting it was selling well and generally reliable, I decided to go ahead. I ordered the Sealion 7 Performance in Shark Grey, cancelled the Tesla order, and lost the cancellation fee. Not ideal, but I accepted it. We took delivery on 5 September 2025 and everything was great. Dad drove it around 13,000 km over roughly 3.5 months, I know it’s a lot but he was like a teenager again driving his car around, and then on 22 December 2025 the issues started. The main centre screen went completely blank and the car went into what they called limp mode(I’ve seen that issue on this page). I was able to reset the instrument cluster by pressing the reset button on the centre console, but the main centre screen would not come back on. I couldn’t change the aircon temperature, car play etc nothing worked. The car still drove. Strangely, the screen worked when the car was in reverse, but not in neutral or drive. That tells me there is clearly an electrical fault somewhere. Because it was Christmas week, I took the car to the dealership on 27 December 2025. They said they would fix it as soon as possible. I waited for an update but did not hear anything, so I returned about a week later and left the car there, making it clear I would not collect it until it was fully resolved. To their credit, they initially loaned me a Sealion 7 Premium in black, but they needed it back after about a week as they were using it for customer test drives. Since around Australia Day, I have been driving an Atto 2 instead. The dealership keeps telling me that a part has been ordered from China, apparently worth around $8,000, and that once it arrives the vehicle will be repaired. But at this stage, I am honestly over it. I have owned the car for 5.5 months, and I have been unable to use it properly for almost 2 of those months. That is a significant portion of ownership for a brand new vehicle. Every week I am chasing the dealership for updates. It feels like a waste of time and energy. They also claim they have never seen this issue before, which I find difficult to believe. It seems unlikely that this is the only Sealion 7 with a fault like this. My uncle has an ATTO 3 and it drives seamlessly. I am normally not someone who complains and I am usually easy to deal with. But in this case, I am paying a lot of money for something I cannot even use. At this point, I would rather return the car entirely. Has anyone else experienced similar issues with the Sealion 7? Photos are attached for reference. I should have taken more pictures but these are the only ones I have. What are my options? I have emailed BYD Australia too but surprise surprise, no response! https://preview.redd.it/0onobsyv6ekg1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc0f776c5771fc7a3adf61d152658f0786de5243 https://preview.redd.it/4sd6rsyv6ekg1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f293419f09bcb0b2cffe5baafea489feb3ef3f17 https://preview.redd.it/0u973vyv6ekg1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=258685da76d144d2f9b99b5fda5caa60791041cc https://preview.redd.it/nqmnvvyv6ekg1.jpg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=780fc4c4dcd0ad3815900852b4deb9a6bcc847db https://reddit.com/link/1r8rg28/video/u2v32l3x6ekg1/player

Scary stuff. I have a sealion 7 (not performance) only for a month now and love it. Hopefully when this is addressed you can enjoy it again.

I know it's no fix, but for the air-conditioning, can you still voice control it? Say hey byd and wait for it to answer? Then tell it to change the temp. I'm not sure if you can pick a temp of just have to say its too hot or too cold

It took byd 13 weeks to get a replacement tbox in for me. You’re about halfway there in terms of timeframe. Hang in there, unfortunately there’s probably not much you can do but wait. At least you’ve got a loaner in the meantime.

The feature doesn’t work either 😢

Sorry to hear about your troubles. BYD definitely need to pick up their game. We have had a BYD Atto 3 for nearly 2 years now and it hasn't missed a beat (touch wood). Hope you are back on the road soon.

Customer service is terrible here (at least in Brisbane) from my experience of buying from them. Lovely car, but the staff were completely amateur, clueless, didn’t even understand the product top to bottom. I fear a day when something goes wrong when I might have to deal with them again. They are selling so many cars too, my fear is that they will be so incredibly busy with even more customers and low infrastructure to attend any needs that may arise.

I have a feeling this is a story that's going to be told over, over and over again in the coming years. So many new brands.. non existent supply chain and after sales service. There will be blood.

Yes, I felt like I wasn't really going to get any details when I booked a test drive foe an Atto 3 and the salesperson accompanying me told me her profesional background prior to BYD was as a personal trainer on the Gold Coast. Nice person, but knew nothing about cars.

Fingers crossed hopefully not!

In Cairns it’ll rust out before it’s issues are fixed.

Interestingly, we just bought a 2026 Atto 2 from the Cairns dealer today. We’ve gone for the mist grey as we like the colour, and the salesman said that he’d’ve been able to show us an Atto 2 in mist grey in person but the only one they had is being used as a loaner. To be fair to him, he explained that the reason it was loaned out was due to what he described as an “incredibly rare issue” with another owner’s Sealion. What a crazy coincidence that I should sign up to this subreddit today and see your story. Hope you get it sorted soon! For what it’s worth I think the dealerships here are in the unenviable position of relying on BYD in China for anything more than straightforward parts. As the network continues to expand and more BYDs are bought, this will hopefully change and a proper Australian supply of parts and know-how will follow - but that won’t be much of a comfort for you, I know.

Hey mate congratulations on your new car :) Yes we’ve got that loaner he’s taking about. They are lovely blokes but yea just incredibly bad luck I guess. I normally am not the guy to complain but I’ve just had it the other day and I miss the performance of the sealion 7😥

Thank you :)

My uncle has the one in white. Great car and good value!

Different scenario I know but I have a Nissan X-Trail 2023. I was involved in an accident on the 12th of December 2025. I am still waiting for it to be repaired as some parts are not available in Australia and had to be ordered ex Japan. So it's not just BYD as far as lack of parts being available but i reckon it is most car manufacturers.

Responsible-Bid7686 2026-02-22 09:52

Sorry to hear that! Hope your car gets repaired soon!

I'm thinking about getting a BYD in Brissie. Any specific dealers to avoid? I was going to go to Aspley .
