It might seem excessive but most panel shops here in aus will charge anywhere from 150 to 250ish to repaint that black trim for it to be done properly strip the mirror and paint the black surround, the cheaper shops will just mask up the mirror and blow in the top section where the scratch is cheaper outcome

Ask if they’ll let you try and buff it out first.
Seriously.

That black trim is plastic. I purchased a replacement part [as mine broke] on Aliexpress (genuine, as I couldn't find any suppliers) for about $60.
It took me about 15mins to change, after watching a YouTube video.

Thanks everyone for the advice - really appreciate it.
I’m just wondering how best to offer these options to the car owner. I do want to keep the repair cost reasonable, but I also don’t want to cause him extra hassle or ask him to manage parts/work himself.
He’s suggested taking the car to BYD first and following their instructions. Would it be reasonable for me to ask whether BYD can confirm if it’s just a cosmetic trim replacement or repaint, and then I cover the cost directly? Keen to handle this fairly and smoothly for him.

I think it will buff out with a bit of wet sandpaper and polish. Google it. Heaps of YouTube videos.... Polish scratches out of shiny black plastic...

I deal with Chinese factories a fair bit. I'd just replace the trim in all honesty. It will be so much cheaper and guarantee like for like. I've seen some shit paint work for sure

If they are getting a quote, just make sure it isnt through their "brother/uncle/cousin/friend", because it's going to cost you thousands...
Ring a dealership and ask them what the cost of a new mirror assembly is going to be, and then ring a wrecker to see if they have one and how much it is.

Pop the trim off, see if it has a part number on it, Google it, surely it's somewhere in China waiting for you.
Or just have the trim sprayed, or do it yourself.

If you zoom in you can see the shavings build up it’s scratched and not just trading paint and as a new car owner you want it perfect the part will have to be replaced but going through insurance would suck as there is the minimum excess to pay

Ex panel beater/spray painter here…not sure why this is in my feed but ok…Firstly I would hit it with some very minor cut and polish (by hand) and see how it looked worse came the worse 3 step polish…if you take this to a shop you’ll either get laughed out the door or charged stupidly for the inconvenience…
