People attempting to open car when aircon runs remote....

proxiblue | 2026-01-22 07:14 | 137 views

Hello, Just something odd I have recently found. At shopping centre, I simply lock my atto 3, and then enable aircon immediately via fob or app, as I walk away to go shop. Generally small shops, aircon is set to run 30 mins. Last week 2 people and a security guard was circling my car trying doors....today two older people (late 60's), walked past, turned back and tried to open drivers door. In both instances I observed this as I was in fact walking towards my car. So I am also wondering how many other times this may be happening (need to install that sentinal app) Just nosy, or people thinking they can nick a running car? Anyone else noticed this happening. I am in perth.

How can they tell the air-con is on? Possibly they think if the air-con is on, there may be a child or a pet in there.

proxiblue 2026-01-22 07:22

You can hear the damn thing. The last people thought it was the engine running. The windows may be tinted, but you can clearly see it is empty.

CumpyGrunt 2026-01-22 07:29

Maybe they think someone has left their car running so they decide to turn it off and remove the keys so it doesn't get stolen? Or thieves, could go either way.

Appropriate_Truth211 2026-01-22 07:39

Do you live in a small community? Can’t imagine anyone in a city being so nosey.

MisterBumpingston 2026-01-22 07:40

Odd, have never had this happen with my Tesla in 3 years. I often keep aircon on to keep the car cool in summer.

proxiblue 2026-01-22 07:40

Not small. Rockingham, 40km from Perth. (or as it is more well known: boganville)

proxiblue 2026-01-22 07:42

Yeah, this has been in the last 3 weeks that I found it twice observed. I did ask teh last couple, they said they thought someone left their car running. They thought the aircon noise was the engine running but, still. not yours, leave it alone.

mikedufty 2026-01-22 07:59

I read someone had theirs stolen when the air con was run using remote start on the fob. Apparently that puts the car in ready state so it can be driven if a window is broken (or doors are unlocked). Better to use the app to turn run the aircon as that won't allow the car to be driven without the fob (won't allow it to be put into drive or reverse without the fob present)

proxiblue 2026-01-22 08:05

\> I read someone had theirs stolen when the air con was run using remote start on the fob. Apparently that puts the car in ready state so it can be driven if a window is broken (or doors are unlocked). valid point, and I also just tested that. turned it on via fob, left fob in house, and drove up and down my road. no problem. Got a 'please ensure the key is in teh vehcile' alert 3 times, but it did not stop me from driving away. So the fob thing is a thief's wet dream. Thanks for that tip. did not even occur to me. with the app, the ignition is not on, so car will not drive

tamakeri_throwaway 2026-01-22 08:06

The compressor is damn loud.

Relatablename123 2026-01-22 08:19

I'm on the other end of the country, 100km from Sydney with over 300k people here and most still act like it's a village.

hereforthejokes20 2026-01-22 08:23

They could also be looking for kids left in the car.

proxiblue 2026-01-22 08:25

you can see into teh car quite clearly, even if tinted windows, so I don;t accept that as a reason to want to open and enter a strangers car.

fester250 2026-01-22 08:28

Perhaps they saw the car was unattended with its lights on and were trying to save you from a flat battery? The lovely old dears being good samaritans. In my case, I mute radio, fold mirrors, turn off the DRL and centre screen. Has been awesome returning to a cool car, even after a couple of hours. Power consumption is around 1% per hour. Sealion 7 here.

PanzerBiscuit 2026-01-22 08:31

A few years ago, also in Perth. I watched someone smash the window of a Tesla and pull a dog out. The owner had left their dog in the car whilst they'd popped into the shops for something. Now, in the surface this seems reasonable enough. Except that the Tesla owner had the aircon on. For the dog. On dog mode or whatever. And now he has a smashed window for his troubles and a freaked out dog. Nothing to add, other than this. And people do it to my Atto as well.

proxiblue 2026-01-22 08:31

Yeah, I just keep the aircon on all the time now. I may have a bad one, as it struggles on the really hot days, but a thermostat at the vent does claim it is pumping out 17c. and i am still hot! Now I just leave it running. I charge 100% on solar. cost me fuckall

proxiblue 2026-01-22 08:32

They just need that social post of saving a dog.

Ok-Koala-key 2026-01-22 08:37

I'll sometimes initiate pet mode while I go into the shops but I'm pretty sure it's not drivable in that state.

proxiblue 2026-01-22 08:37

I don't think the atto 3 has a pet mode.

Proof_Explanation825 2026-01-22 08:40

Whatever the cause, you deserve the hassle. You've practically commit treason putting ccp spy cameras on our roads. Hope the $$$ you saved are worth it when drone swarms carpet the skies.

nachoman2750 2026-01-22 09:28

I thought that the engine has to be running while the A/C is in use!?! I read something recently that explained people with cars that the engine stops automatically while they were stationary, at traffic lights etc, were not happy about it because the A/C also stopped when the engine cut off. Not too sure, tho!???!🤔🤔🤔

proxiblue 2026-01-22 09:29

erm, this is an EV. There is no engine

Nidis 2026-01-22 09:35

Never mistake for malice what could easily be stupidity. They probably just saw a car turn on by itself and thought something might be broken - people are more likely to be alert for someone accidentally leaving their lights on and running down the battery.

nachoman2750 2026-01-22 09:46

HAHAHA, THANKYOU FOR THAT. I KNOW IM A BIT DUMB, ACTUALLY!!! BUT I DEFINITELY MISSED THAT PART OF THE STORY. LIVE AND LEARN!!!😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄

UterineDictator 2026-01-22 09:48

The fuck is wrong with you?

nachoman2750 2026-01-22 09:48

Thanks mate, i definitely missed that part of the story, THE MAIN PART!!!😄 Then i just replied to you, but i sent it as an open post. I WIL SEE MYSELF OUT!!!🍻😄🍻😄🍻

proxiblue 2026-01-22 10:11

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

aldkGoodAussieName 2026-01-22 10:12

Meth or Facebook i think

richkill 2026-01-22 10:42

Yea you can generally see the power consumption on the dash. Probably tops out at 5kw depending on how hard it's working (same as when you are driving and Regen braking)

Amelia_carter1 2026-01-22 10:46

Remote AC on turns your car into a public curiosity exhibit 😄 Silent EV + aircon running = people think it’s unlocked or abandoned. Not thieves—just confused humans encountering future tech in the wild 🚗❄️

Tea-Aholic 2026-01-22 11:11

5kW is crazy! My Model 3 uses maybe at most 1.5kW when the AC is cooling the car and then runs at a constant 830W to maintain temperature.

come_ere_duck 2026-01-22 11:26

Honestly, I’d say more than anything it’s unfamiliarity and people thinking you’ve accidentally left the car on and that they’re doing you a favour. I for one have shut random peoples doors and fuel flaps when I notice they’re not shut properly a few times. I’d hope I’m not mistaken as a car thief.

fester250 2026-01-22 11:28

Methbook

thatbullisht 2026-01-22 11:46

AC should be coming out lower than 17 from the vents.

proxiblue 2026-01-22 11:54

I suspect my ac is not good, but no one want to service or touch it, and BYD service place is 1.5h drive one way. So at present during the school holidays, but will need to make a plan to go have it checked. 6m old

trenna5 2026-01-22 12:03

I’ve had this happen. Country pub blokes bails me up “mate mate ya car is still on or something. Doesn’t sound right” haha just left the air con mate. He felt like a drongo.

MisterBumpingston 2026-01-22 12:09

Interesting. I only have factory tint so the front row is virtually clear. Hows the aircon in the Atto 3? I’d imagine it’s no louder than a typical Tesla.

MouseEmotional813 2026-01-22 12:29

It's not. But if you have a Tesla (pet mode sounds like a Tesla) then you can activate the aircon/heater from your app to prepare the car before you get in. The internal temperature will drop from 38oC to 15oC in a few minutes. The internal temperature won't go above 38oC if you have 'cabin overheat protection' switched on - also in your app.

MouseEmotional813 2026-01-22 12:33

I bought transfers for my windows explaining 'dog mode' and internal temperature of the car because it's not obvious that the screen displays that. It still worries me and I won't use it unless it's only for a minute or two

Auswolf-IDDQD 2026-01-22 12:59

I mean he is an ass. But I kinda get what he is saying. The world so freaked out of Chinese apps spying on us, Chinese security systems in parliament being torn out. Yet we will happy drive around in Chinese cars running Chinese software, collecting untold amounts of data and sending it back to the homeland. All to save a few $$. I mean if it is spyware it is a genius way of getting it everywhere.

Ok-Koala-key 2026-01-22 13:30

It's an Xpeng. Pet mode came with the latest update so it seems like something BYD could add OTA. I've only used it when I'm ducking in somewhere for a few minutes, otherwise the feature in the app is called "Max cool". Yeah, it's pretty rapid. I prefer not to use the feature to keep the cabin cool if I'm not returning for quite a while though. Seems like a waste of energy.

[deleted] 2026-01-22 13:55

I mean, a security guard and old people in their 60’s most probably aren’t trying to jack your car. They were probably good samaritans who thought someone left their car running and wanted to turn it off and/or remove the keys so it didn’t get stolen or run the battery flat.

SalamanderTop8065 2026-01-22 14:14

If you were walking towards your car and noticed this, why didn't you simply ask what they were doing?

Masticle 2026-01-22 14:23

Without being fully conversant in EV A/C systems you are probably shortening the life of the hermetic compressor by running it for so long while stationary. Someone commented that theirs is not as cold after doing this, the extra airflow while moving will help with heat transfer. If the compressor fuses it will contaminate the refrigeration system and be quite the repair bill.

proxiblue 2026-01-22 14:33

You make a few assumptions. I have complained mine is not cold from day one of having the car, around 6 months now, I have a reddit thread on that going. I have only been running the aircon parked like that since summer kicked in, with a gap in between as it suddenly got colder. so maybe since december You know what i really fucking hate? 40c plus hot sun and the heat and the sweat. I'll use the creature comfort and tech that allow me to be comfortable until I run it into the ground, and then either replace or fix it with something better. Sure it can happen, but i can also just be run over by a bus at any moment. My aircon has battled to cool me down in teh cab on days over 33c. It was so hot and I was sweating so bad I had problems seeing as my glasses fogged up and sweat dripping in my eye. So just no. keeping it running helps a lot. i do it maybe 1once a week as I WFH, and at maximum dive 50km a week. Thanks for your concern.

proxiblue 2026-01-22 14:37

You know what, that actually occured to me, and I did. They said they were checking if teh car was running, the woman had already walked off, and teh guy also then just walked off. so, amazing thing is people lie.

proxiblue 2026-01-22 14:39

I totally agree, but these are just two I have observed. Could it be that by running it, i am attracting unwanted attention and 'theft by opportunity' potential attempts. I am clearly asking if other have noticed this, and maybe have smilar experience or attempted thefts.

proxiblue 2026-01-22 14:45

No idea about Tesla, but the atto is loud. plus I suspect my aircon might not be working right, but I have tried to get a local tech /service centre to look, and sadly no one wants to touch it. So I have to go 1.5 h drive to nearest BYD to have a look, and well, I have not had the time: December, my 13yr old bday, xmas, my bday, new year, work in between all that, then th 13yr old was hospitalised for appendix, that came out last week monday, she been home, and I been busy with work. pus everything was closed or understaffed for the festive period. so, time. i been a bit occupied.

proxiblue 2026-01-22 14:47

i figure people just not used to the idea that we can just let the aircons run. with ICE they need to run teh car engine, and extrude fumes, and their fuel cost a lot

dpskipper 2026-01-22 15:04

i've certainly heard of reports with BYDs not having great aircons. Push the service center to test and rectify.

proxiblue 2026-01-22 15:07

I seem to have to repeat this a few times, as a few people keep saying : take it to repairs. I have an actual thread on redit discussing my unhappiness with the aircon. I got car in october. cut and pasted from another answer: I have tried to get a local tech /service centre to look, and sadly no one wants to touch it. I agree I need to, I am just a but busy. Since I work for myself, taking time out of work is costly for me as well. december sucks my buffer.

dpskipper 2026-01-22 15:11

You've encountered the major stumbling block that is holding BYD back from becoming a more established brand in this country. Unfortunately all you can do is be patience or buy another car I guess

proxiblue 2026-01-22 15:14

yep. I was rather disappointed to hit this, and not something that I thought of when deciding on the car. My other choice was a kona, but I really disliked the 'flip out spring loaded and is gonna break very quickly' cup holders, and the fact the charge port is on the frikkin bumper. I dislike that enough to not have gone for it.

No-Citron-2774 2026-01-22 18:49

Oldies will steal anything .then make a slooooow get away

MaiknoMistaik 2026-01-22 18:58

Enabling PIN to drive will negate this. After someone locally had their car stolen while the A/C was running and with all the home break ins I thought it best to turn it on

Nickexp 2026-01-22 20:04

BYD make electric cars

ChannelMundane854 2026-01-22 20:42

AC at the vents should be 4-10c on a hot day and 2-7c on a mild one. Something not right there.

Flightwise 2026-01-22 20:44

From the “people don’t understand EVs” file: I got my Tesla model 3 in June 2021. Soon after installed an auto power frunk feature through a third party supplier. Was parked in a Woolies to do some shopping next to a group of tradies in their Ranger or Hilux (whatever). Came back and opened the frunk to clearly place a roast chicken in there (that’s where hot smelly food goes eg also pizzas). One of the young blokes notices and jokes about keeping the chicken warm by leaving it on the engine for the drive home. Female tradie elbows him in the ribs and tells him it’s an EV, and bloke goes crimson red. I’m guessing decades ago same story played out with VW Bugs.

Jacobskii 2026-01-22 21:47

Hey idk if you care or if it’ll alleviate some stress, aircons typically suck when the cars hot and not moving, sucks in all the fresh air while driving that’s cool, as opposed to recycling ambient air that’s the same temp as outside.

noofa01 2026-01-22 22:44

Is this normal for ev's? I'd buy one just for that.

MisterBumpingston 2026-01-22 23:15

Sounds terribly busy, sorry to hear.

proxiblue 2026-01-22 23:24

Yeah, I know, thanks. The aircon at present is not coping to cool the car down at all if we are at 35c plus days, even when driving. The whole reason I am now keeping it running for short shop trips (quick into woolies for base supplies), so it remains cool for when I get back. I am tired of sweating like a rapist in my car going home from shops. It dos not happen often, as I usually plan my shop trips better, but shit happens. I am aware the aircon is used to cool the battery especially during fast charge. so it is best to get it checked out. I have a thermostat that was for a fishtank. It seem to be measuring correct if I test it against a digital one I have in my office. So, it measures at 17c give or take a few .1 variations. I also like very cold. my child always complains i make it too cold in teh house as well. So, could aslo just be my perception, but my KIA cerato aircon was way way better. never had this issue. So, if it is chcked and is ok, then i'd say the atto 3 has a crap aircon. I know I need to have it checked out, and i will soon.

mstrelan 2026-01-22 23:25

Yeah home ducted air con doesn't even use 5kW

proxiblue 2026-01-22 23:33

oh, i was not sure. thanks for teh info. then there is definitely an issue. the lowest I get is 17c, and that is with the thermostat pushed into the vent (1m cable on scope?) when hot by feel it just feels like warm air. but thermostat says 17c. So is confusing. just bad timing. I am goinh to call today to try get an appointment, as i will still be under warranty

Electrical_Craft4653 2026-01-22 23:34

What car is it? Sounds like it sucks.

proxiblue 2026-01-22 23:37

Atto 3. The car is great. I really like it, and it suits my driving habits perfectly. Cost was a factor. But from many others I am being told I have a defective aircon

Electrical_Craft4653 2026-01-22 23:48

Fair enough, i’m glad you like it. Im sensitive to heat so good aircon is a must for me, i’m sure you can get yours fixed. Only on the hottest days should you need to run it full bore.

Glittering_Poem9779 2026-01-23 00:26

I’ve driven one.. they have these weird guitar strings in the door trims.. you start playing guitar driving them.

Tomica333 2026-01-23 00:58

This, some ppl just notice something and the good in them wants to try help.. like back in the day before auto headlights ppl would just mention"mate your headlights are on " and be on their way.

AndrewAuAU 2026-01-23 01:07

This sounds like what was reported in the media where a BYD customer got told not to drive the vehicle as poor cooling could also mean the batteries aren't getting cooled correctly. They were also regional so had to pay hundreds for a tow truck and then there were problems with parts which mean the car was offline for weeks. Not sure what model they had but sounded like a shitshow.

Adventurous-Bee-5477 2026-01-23 02:03

If that's the case possible car bomb, unattended running car (is maybe what they thinking?

Immediate-Net-1301 2026-01-23 02:38

I actually reported a car running for over an hour in a car park. I didn’t even know people could do this lol. I was worried there was a kid left in it, but I checked and couldn’t see one but reported it to security anyway.

butterchickn_ 2026-01-23 03:00

Oldies and security are more than likely thinking keys left in it and could be stolen or battery go flat. I remote started my car walking back to it but out of sight and found a man standing at it bewilded because he noticed it randomly start with no one in it. He asked a couple questions out of curiosity and was just amazed at technology these days and how good it must be to have the car cooled down before it even being in sight.

_The-_ 2026-01-23 03:33

I reckon that’s it. The aircon compressor makes a bit of noise, sounds like an engine potentially.

dijicaek 2026-01-23 04:47

Only the finest CIA spy cameras for me, thank you

FreddyFerdiland 2026-01-23 05:02

??? that depends on the temperature of the dashboard, firewall A pillar, heat exchanger space, the carpark below... Even if the air in the cabin is only warm, the A/C has competition, the volume there where it is has heaps of power to warm the air .. ( by power I mean difference in temperature X area of contact with a/c air flow) .. it all depends on why we need A/C .. a hotspot from the sun on the dashboard, greenhouse effect , or is it hot all through, even the concrete......

bigaussiecheese 2026-01-23 05:22

I didn’t know that was a thing cars could do honestly. I would think someone forgot to turn their car off.

thatbullisht 2026-01-23 10:36

Should be a split of 15-20 degrees between the air inside the cab when working properly. I'm going to assume they're cranking their AC at max if there's a problem with it. The fact it's coming out of the vents at 17°C means there's definitely an issue unless you're running AC at 27°C or above.

zargreet 2026-01-23 12:21

I sometimes run in to get milk or bakery stuff and leave the AC running (EV air on by app) if I have the dogs in there. I am worried someone is going to smash the windows to help free the dogs.

richkill 2026-01-23 12:26

See below for a test a sl6 owner did

thatsitfolks333 2026-01-23 14:26

Guy at Herdsman spent 3-4 days dead in the the drivers seat of his car infront of the main entrance doors. So probably looking to see if everything is ok inside since no driver to be seen

luv_lee 2026-01-24 07:08

Print off a note for the car indicating what you're doing but stop polluting the environment when you're not in the car. It doesn't take long to cool down once you return.

Outwestinoz 2026-01-24 09:30

Did you read any of the post?

luv_lee 2026-01-24 09:38

Yes. The air-conditioner was running while the OP was inside shopping. Did you read the post?

-StRaNgEdAyS- 2026-01-25 09:02

It's an electric car...

luv_lee 2026-01-25 09:57

I'm just going to shut up then...

aquaja 2026-01-25 22:28

Had same issue with a BMW and had to insist it was a problem as first check of logs said everything reported fine. They ended up doing the actual manual check with gauges and found it was very low on coolant. They added due to new coolant to see if there are any leaks in future. So much cooler now. The car is black and can stay cool on hot days.

Correct_Fig_1176 2026-01-26 01:15

A friend of mine has a BYD with weak aircon. BYD were very responsive when they brought it in, and gave them a loan car. I don’t know what the final result was.

National-Response-43 2026-01-26 10:21

This is an environmental disaster

TinyDemon000 2026-01-26 19:21

Security guard, elderly folks... I reckon you're spot on. Just trying to do something nice. Not everyone wants to see the world burn 😂

Toughgamer 2026-01-27 02:02

check if your aircon is set to eco - if so switch to normal, and make sure aircon mode is on refrigeration cycle (internal air only) - it cools down fairly quickly when you do this.

proxiblue 2026-01-29 06:58

EV's can. ICE needs engine running.

proxiblue 2026-01-29 07:00

How you reckon? Can you expand on your statement.

proxiblue 2026-01-29 07:02

is not on eco. Thanks, I had tried that already.

proxiblue 2026-01-29 07:13

u/Auswolf-IDDQD Hey, Just wanted to respond to your comment on teh cameras and china spying on us. I can;t respon in that thread, as the original thread was created by a user that has blocked me, and who had complained to reddit i was being mean, so they banned me for a while. Poor little sad man he is. Your response warrants a proper response, as you don't, well, seem crazy. :) There is no way china can be spying on us via the cars cameras, as he (and you) suggested. Think bandwidth. It is not free, it will cost money. Do you know how much bandwidth will be used by just a couple of cars feeding camera feeds, or periodic photos to china? Even if encrypted the VOLUME of data will quickly be noticed. This is true for any devices made in china, that has camera. Audio might be another problem, less likely noticed, but still if millions of devices are all feeding video, it will very quickly be noticed. 2ndly, they can just go load google maps, and use street view. Nothing 'secret' about the roads I travel. Is all on google anyways \*shrug\* So, yeah, a very pointless and easily rebuked conspiracy theory
