"free" house battery with vehicle purchase?

rossp | 2026-01-21 05:42 | 50 views

**Updated:** I finally got more details from BYD Doncaster and the battery installer. [See comment below](https://www.reddit.com/r/BYDAU/comments/1qipll0/comment/o0zc1me/). **Original post:** When test driving a Sealion 7 last week, the salesperson told us that there is an offer available at the moment with new BYD purchases whereby a BYD Home Battery (40kWh) is provided for free, you just need to pay for your own installation. I can find NO public info on this. I clarified whether she meant charger or battery, and she reiterated that the offer was for batteries as they'd been able to capitalise on the federal government rebates. This does not seem to check out at all, and I'm waiting on a call back from "the battery team" that she has referred me on to. Anybody got any details on this to-good-to-be-true offer? Or is it bollocks from a salesperson misunderstanding and/or misleading customers?

It’s more like an 82 or 91 kWh battery… and it’s on wheels. Buy the car, get a VTL cable, boom! Power your house. Seriously, it sounds too good to be true, get it in writing. And make sure it is in the contract, the contract might just refer to it as a specific promo name. Because it would be a rebate promotion not incorporated with the purchase

rossp 2026-01-21 06:15

Haha you’re not wrong about the rolling battery. I’m in the same page re contracts etc - just seeking any other info that’s available because it honestly feels too good to be true… my hunch only seems to be reinforced by the dearth of information.

keep us informed of how this turns out!

My novated lease has been finalised and am expecting my SL7 to be available this or next week. 3k cashback and free EV charger. Didn't get much details on the charger but I'm pretty sure it's not a home battery. I'll update here if I remember.

Internal_Royal7687 2026-01-21 07:58

Probably the plug in type that is included with most EVs

opiomorpher 2026-01-21 08:00

They specifically mentioned it as part of their promotion. But we'll see what they give me.

Internal_Royal7687 2026-01-21 08:04

Funny that, I ordered one 2 weeks ago and got the 3k cashback and told it comes with a charger. When I asked about the charger they said it was a "plug in the wall trickle charger"

Having just been through a home battery install. I assure you that the main costs to the end customer are for the Inverter and Installation. The battery storage per usable kWh is actually what the rebate applies to, so although there is no public info of this BYD offer, if all they are supplying are BYD battery modules only and claiming the rebate then I wouldn't be calling it too good to be true. Because the rebate covers most of the cost of the battery modules (again, excluding inverter and install). A good hybrid inverter will be upwards of $2,500, add at least another $2,500 for Installation. I don't know much about the BYD home battery system but I do know some Fronius hybrid inverters are compatible with them. To get the rebate the installer needs to go through a process of documenting evidence including photos of the install at your property. So unless BYD are arranging the install or have an agreement in place with your chosen installer I don't see a way for BYD to claim the rebate. Another important thing for you to know. The rebate is a once off for the property. If you change your mind later and want ro add a battery module or even change it out for another brand your up for full costs. So be 100% sure of your system before it gets the green light to be installed.

What type of charger? A granny charger, also known as a level 1 charger, is capable of supplying usually between 1.5 to 2 kWh, and is supplied with the car by BYD for free.

Internal_Royal7687 2026-01-21 09:06

That's what it will be

opiomorpher 2026-01-21 09:22

Yeah that's what I'm figuring. If it was the standard granny charger that comes with their vehicles I wouldn't think it would be advertised like it was a promo item. Checking my emails, I did specifically mention if it was a 7kw EV charger and they said yes, but that I would have to pay for the installation myself, which wouldn't be the case with a granny charger.

Mysterious-Yak1693 2026-01-21 09:25

there are a few people using Atto 3's as home batteries, maybe that's what the guy meant by a 'free' battery. Look it up on Youtube, the car goes to the shops once per week but powers the house at night after getting a solar charge in the daytime.

rossp 2026-01-21 09:28

All important points thank you, and I’m across them all too thanks to too much research over the past year to try and make batteries work out. We opted to go for a 2md EV instead, so the possibility of getting both in one go was a pleasant surprise! My bigger question was why this was offered with zero information available. Makes it hard to validate eg specific models to work with my existing inverter, battery capacity vs our household needs, and so forth. Delays on getting more info are making it feel more like an overconfident salesperson. I’ll report back once they finally get back to me…

rossp 2026-01-21 09:29

The boxes in the boot of the cars at the demo centre we went to were 7kw chargers, in addition to the granny charger. I sure if that’s dealer-specific or across all BYD sales though.

rossp 2026-01-21 09:34

Yeah we thought that might have been it too, so asked again (and again) and they were adamant… but with very few details. I’ll just have to be patient and wait for the call back I guess!

It's the output that counts, as far as I know that's very limited to about 3kw which will provide emergency power to fridges and freezers but that's about it.  You need a gateway and 10kw inverter and high output batteries for a proper setup

Paul_K-95 2026-01-21 12:25

Updateme!

dahanjayhay 2026-01-21 12:55

Please update us OP once you find out

DrSendy 2026-01-21 14:27

We have a BYD battery outside and Fronius inverter (5kw) which is adequate for our house backup and day to day. Just got home from the city (quite a drive) - the car is pulling 4.5 from the battery and 2.7 from the grid to charge, so that will run out within the hour. It will be all charged by about 10:30am tomorrow.

Nos_4r2 2026-01-21 14:38

I think your salesperson got 'Free Home Charger' mixed up with 'Free Home Battery' BYD Auto Division and BYD Battery division, despite being the same company, don't have a lot of synergies here and the likelihood of them cross promoting will be slim.

rossp 2026-01-22 03:12

**Follow-up** So I figured out what's going on here. The deal is not from BYD Australia, but it is a "partnership offering" from one of the Melbourne dealer networks (who run BYD Doncaster, Melbourne, and others in the Eastern suburbs). The battery being provided is a FoxESS 39kWh with 5kW inverter. The battery is "Free" but installation must be done by this particular firm, whose name escapes me. They're quoting $3500 for base install, $4000 for "complex" installs (including garages with bollards etc). If I were skeptical I'd guess that the owners of the Doncaster BYD team are buddies with the owners of the installation company. But I'm not feeling overly skeptical so this seems to be a local business lead-share / revenue-share partnership. I don't think this is a dreadful deal, if you're in the market for this particular battery setup (which I have opinions on and which is outside the scope of the question I originally asked). If you consider the $3k rebate currently on offer from BYD, and squint just right, you can see this coming out as "free" to some households.

roadkill4snacks 2026-01-22 04:21

does that apply to households without the government battery rebate?

rossp 2026-01-22 06:24

As our house is still eligible for the battery rebate (and they’d called back when I was trying to negotiate my way through rooted public transport this morning 🤣) I didn’t actually check this sorry, but I assume the deal would be off. If I find myself talking to them again in future I’ll follow this up.

roadkill4snacks 2026-01-22 06:36

from my limited understanding that 5kw inverter will be a bottle neck. also FoxESS reviews suggest the company and product has mixed reviews. not sure i would want to use my once off discount for something limited.

rossp 2026-01-22 06:43

No disagreement here, but as noted I think the specifics of the battery are a bigger conversation. That said this might work for some, but for my use the inverter specifically is likely to stop me using this as a “must-buy” incentive.

LawfulnessBoring9134 2026-01-22 10:35

Sealion7 has an 82 kw battery. They should help us with a bi-directional charger.

Tonza443 2026-01-23 07:41

Unless they are paying the install team $1000 each an hour this is massively overpriced

opiomorpher 2026-01-24 22:45

So dealership confirmed its an untethered 7kw wall charger. Picking the vehicle up in a few days.

Late-Professor-5038 2026-01-25 19:55

My mate just had these batteries installed with 13.5kw system. 5 kw is too small for that much battery storage.

No_Soil_6117 2026-02-14 09:50

I was at Byd Doncaster recently and they offered the home battery also to me. They said it's worth about $10k. I would need to have the battery installed by April I think. Interesting promo. FYI I haven't purchased a car from them yet

CitronPrize9568 2026-02-16 10:07

I have picked up my Atto3 and my 7kwh charger but haven't accepted the battery offer yet. The company provided a quote for 3 Alpha Ess batteries+ inverter. The quote comes froma website impowerau.com. Has anyone been able to get more information?
