I think you’re underestimating how bloody big this thing will be but yeah 77k driveway for the premium 😬
It’s still a good 10% cheaper than rival models across the levels though

56k is cheap!

Yap. This is the issue with only considering the purchasing price vs overall cost of ownership.

The premium model came in about $8k more then I expected for BYD. What I found interesting if paint option is $1500 compared to $700 for other models - how is that justified?

2026-01-16 10:28
The paint option was $2k for the SL7

Where did you come up with that. The Atto 3 has been out 3 years now and no where near that. Factor in fuel savings and it will easily stack up especially if you can charge for free.

If you can show your work as to how you managed to come up with this number it should be possible to identify the errors in your data..
(This is a ridiculous assertion if it’s that).

2026-01-16 14:23
Yeah, it's only 5k more than I paid for my Atto 3 in 2023. Really not bad for the size and tech.

60773 is the real price, in NSW at least.
People need to stop quoting the car cost and quote the drive away price.
Also unless you actually look inside the car, you cant really compare 7 seaters. Some like the Isuzu MUX have 7 seats that you can put 7 adults in. Where as the Outlander you'd only put kids in the back 2 seats.

Dimension wise it’s longer than an mux, so unless they gutted the interior it should have some space for adults at the back.

If a bunch of EV’s with double the battery capacity roll off the production lines then maybe.
Otherwise, no. Pretty standard depreciation comparable with most vehicles apart from the select few that hold their value regardless.
jreddit0000
2026-01-16 23:05
Yes? Not sure about how relevant that is to making up depreciation figures but it is a PHEV..

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say PHEV will devalue faster as more mechanical complexity will likely mean higher maintenance costs in the future
NorthKoreaPresident
2026-01-17 00:42
Thats not 'value' for sure as in the value category you've got Jaecoo and the likes. But its not luxury either. Their Denza range is the true luxury one. Id say 50~70k is the normal price range for a moderate ev/ PHEV

The jump between the middle and top models seems extreme for the differences. But muppets like me will pay it anyway because I had already decided I would get the top spec. I think BYD are just using the Overseas markets to offset the cutthroat Chinese market losses. Can't blame them and I think it is still a lot of car for the money. Some of the cars we get here are "old tech" by the time they arrive but in this case the Sealion 8 is still very current if you want a PHEV.

It’s a hybrid, so not eligible for FBT exemption. Can’t see large uptake.
I’d trust Chinese manufacturers with batteries, but combustion engines and transmissions - not a chance

But do PHEV have more depreciation then ICE cars? Or do just think they would?
jreddit0000
2026-01-17 06:27
Do ICE cars with turbos depreciate faster than ones without because of the added complexity?
It is in fact unreasonable to say this if you don’t have any data to back it up.
It is also very easy to do the work to get this data by looking at sales on carsales as a starting point. 🤷🏾
jreddit0000
2026-01-17 06:32
What is the point of doing category comparisons?
Will a BYD Sealion 8 (PHEV) depreciate faster than an Lamborghini Hurrican (ICE)? What about a Mitsubishi Fuso (ICE)?
Would it not be more useful to look at both the starting price and comparison against direct competitors in the same space?
ewan82
2026-01-17 06:37
Even a hybrid corolla or old Prius will be worth less than a petrol only at a certain age/km because the battery will need to be replaced eventually. Time in market has proven to be very reliable. BYD simply doesn’t have time in market to say they are reliable or otherwise

This is conjecture. It ignores developments in technology and reliability.
Is the latest Toyota Corolla (ICE) an unknown reliability factor because it’s.. not had “time in the market”? 🤷🏾
It’s moot anyway as I don’t know what point you are trying to make. That all PHEVs will depreciate faster than all ICEs?
That all cars BYD makes that are PHEVs will depreciate faster than.. all ICE cars?
These aren’t going to be substantiated by any data but you can certainly have an opinion about it. 🤷🏾

Just tested driving it, its decent. Power is good. Drive feel is same with hyundai - soft side. Quality is same level with hyundai as well. Not comparable to european cars yet. Its roomy inside but the 3rd row isn’t adult friendly.
