how can they reasonably charge $10 a month for 2 gig of data?

when someone like costco can have this on offer - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/940317 - 290GB 365-Day Plan $220 yeah you need to be a member to buy this, but what byd has on offer for those with cars older than 2 years is a joke when you look at this

Probably the cheapest IoT plan Telstra has.

If you're using Carplay or Andriod Auto no need to pay for this. Not having it doesn't affect updates or BYD app usage and comms with the car.

Luckily it’s only for data when driving, all connected services still work

Corrupttothethrones 2025-12-17 05:24

When my 2 years was up the app stopped communicating with the car. It does appear ever once in a while but I suspect that's when it's connected to home wifi. I tried resetting the car and removing the Sim.

The $10 also gives you range and traffic data in the navigation app.

$10 per month is about the cheapest connection you can get. That is $100 per year cheaper than the costco plan. Data is cheap, its the service that costs.

It’s based on the industry standard that was started by Tesla. The data limit is irrelevant. If you want a work around, go buy a prepaid wireless hotspot. You can connect to it via the cars wifi and then use the native apps that way. Keep in mind you wouldn’t be able to use CarPlay or android auto this way, so you may as well just hotspot your phone.

I want the app to work! Is there any cheaper alternative to paying BYD the $10 per month? I don't need more data as I don't have any other use for the car's data apart from the app.

Eastern37 2025-12-17 10:01

The app still works for me and I'm past the 2 year mark. I haven't heard of anyone else having issues either.

welding-guy 2025-12-17 10:20

>how can they reasonably charge $10 a month for 2 gig of data? Because unlike the western competitors, they sold you a car pretty cheap up front and if you cant afford 30 cents per day just give up your car and walk.

raumatiboy 2025-12-17 10:40

The app works anyway. I suspect you had a problem with the app

raumatiboy 2025-12-17 10:41

You don't need it. Just use your phone data

QLDZDR 2025-12-17 11:07

Kogan resells Vodafone/TPG cheap than that

Relevant-Priority-76 2025-12-17 18:12

Is the navigation app good yet? Found it garbage last time I used it. Speed camera locations completely wrong and less than optimum directions given. Only advantage was it was easy to open and set destination with voice commands

maecenas68 2025-12-17 19:57

It's good if you don't own a smartphone and your only alternative is a 1998 melways

Micki90 2025-12-18 03:26

cheap or what its actually worth?

welding-guy 2025-12-18 03:33

well technically the value of a thing is extrinsic & subjective. I find Chinese cars are very cheap, as in inexpensive and I believe they are worth much more than the ticket price.

Micki90 2025-12-18 03:41

I agree everything is only worth what someone is willing to pay. if you look at the raw price of materials, the proliferation of manufacting automation and most cars are produced in third world nations with substantally lower costs across the board the fact that cars have gotten more expensive with cheaper and more readily available materials and less labour kind of boggles the mind.

Anecdotally I went past the two year period and the app continued working until one day it just stopped. Bought the data package last week but it hasn’t resumed. Both service centre and customer service told me buying the data package would fix it. But neither has so far

Eastern37 2025-12-21 02:23

The notification everyone got when it expired specifically said the app would be unaffected, along with OTA's and the data plan does not mention the app at all.

Xerun1 2025-12-21 02:48

I am aware. But I have been completely disconnected from the app and before the Customer Support line AND the Service Centre have said it’s because I ran out of data through the provided 2 year plan.
