the data connection only lasts for 2 years, then you need to pay $10/month for 2 gig!

warkolm | 2025-10-16 20:16 | 50 views

my spotify recently stopped working on my atto and I hit up customer service to ask why, this was their response; >All new BYD vehicles, excluding the Essential range, are supplied with a complimentary 2-year, 2GB per month data package. > >BYD had continued to extend this package for vehicles older than two years until a formal extension plan was introduced. However, from 30 September 2025, all complimentary data packages for vehicles older than two years have now ceased. > >Please note this change does not affect your BYD App functionality or over-the-air (OTA) updates. > >If you wish to continue your data package, you can extend it for $9.99 per month via the BYD App by following these steps: > >1. Open the BYD App >2. Select ‘My Account’ >3. Tap ‘Store’ and select your vehicle >4. Choose ‘1 month’, then purchase and checkout I have asked they they didn't notify about this *before* the cutoff but I haven't had a response. you can put your own sim card in there, as the $10 for 2gb is a massive rip off. but then the app and ota features don't work. which feels like a real piss take on behalf of byd here I will update this based on my conversation with them

Can’t you just connect your phone?

KeyAd8166 2025-10-16 20:34

It’s expensive but still 40% cheaper than the likes of Tesla. It’s rare to find sim options for much cheaper prices anyway and i think they use Telstra which is more expensive. I don’t feel they are ripping off, but feels like they are finding reality of prices with AU comm companies. Anyway, switching to phone data fit Spotify etc is a pain. Glad basic functionality like remote control works, that’s crucial

Use AndroidAuto or CarPlay?

dpskipper 2025-10-17 00:51

for the few bucks a month extra the tesla one gets u way more features. remote viewing of the vehicles full array of cameras for one.

Yes, although depending on how or if you use remote features it may limit their usefulness - maybe sufficiently so that it may longer be a matter of 'just' doing it

[deleted] 2025-10-17 05:31

And are arguably better since they are constantly being updated and have a very active 3rd party app ecosystem.

dpskipper 2025-10-17 06:01

very relevant mate. the guy i'm replying too said it's 40% less money than tesla's offering. however if you look into what you get with tesla's premium connectivity, it's pretty decent compared to BYD.

Anything else apart from remote camera view? AFAIK that’s pretty much it. Pretty sure once/if BYD enable that feature it’ll also be available too, and I don’t think BYD would increase their connectivity price because of 1 feature.

Owning a Tesla sounds about as fun as subscribing to Adobe.

dpskipper 2025-10-17 06:32

You get: \- Live traffic visualization \- Satellite-view maps \- 3D buildings and cityscapes (recent software addition) \- Enhanced routing with traffic-based Trip Planner and Supercharger availability \- Streaming from Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Tidal, and TuneIn \- Video streaming from Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, and Twitch \- Caraoke (in-car karaoke app) \- Built-in internet browser on the touchscreen \- Enhanced security camera live view (e.g., Sentry Mode footage via app) \- Voice commands with potential future Grok integration Tesla has a datacenter in the AU region, so interacting with the vehicle via the app is very snappy. Unless BYD is also planning something in the AU region i'd hate to think of how the app would perform when the vehicle has to stream its camera's to china, then back to australia again.

dpskipper 2025-10-17 06:35

you can just hotspot if you don't want to pay, similar story with BYD. however if you are going to pay either company a monthly subscription, the tesla offering is better value for money.

throwmethedamnstick 2025-10-17 06:59

Such a silly thing for people to whinge about. Updates, app services etc will still work. You don’t NEED this data.

stinx2001 2025-10-17 07:17

I was told about the 2 years when I picked up my SL6.

KeyAd8166 2025-10-17 08:52

Everything listed above is already available in BYD vehicles with a $10 connectivity option (either built-in or via CarPlay/Android Auto), except for Sentry Mode — a controversial feature to begin with. BYD also operates servers in Sydney, Australia, addressing local data privacy expectations. And while some people raise concerns about Chinese companies and data, Tesla isn’t exactly known for spotless ethics including privacy, honouring for regulation, respect for customer, and ethics in general. When you compare the professionalism and conduct of BYD’s CEO with Tesla’s CEO, it reveals the differences in their leadership culture eventually going into building their products.

dpskipper 2025-10-17 08:59

I have no idea who the CEO of BYD is. People buy a car due to its features we're discussing right now. What's CEO got to do with it? With regards to carplay, personally i never liked it. Phone overheats, connection is spotty, apps glitch out and don't work. Not every app works on carplay due to regulations etc. Tesla's software just works. People seem to not be bothered by the lack of carplay either, judging from the sales figures.

KeyAd8166 2025-10-17 09:38

My reference to CEO was in response to China comment, i hoped that was obvious. Enjoy your Tesla

dpskipper 2025-10-17 09:49

Do you have any evidence the AU datacenter runs the phone app? I heard rumours of a local datacenter but I thought it was only for software update deployment? My byd app is frustratingly sluggish to update hence why I suspect it's coming from china

shadjor 2025-10-17 10:41

don't you need it for the standard BYD GPS navigation?

warkolm 2025-10-17 19:50

$240 for 24 gig of data is a rip off. you can buy year long sims with tonnes more data than that for half the price and using the telstra network

locksmack 2025-10-17 20:03

I’ve got a Tesla and a BYD. I don’t pay for premium connectivity for either of them. Basic functions like the app work fine for both without it, and for music I just use Bluetooth in the Tesla and CarPlay in the BYD. So Tesla aren’t stuck paying for any functions any more than BYD is. Seriously don’t get the allure of the data plans.

KeyAd8166 2025-10-17 22:04

Wasn’t it $10 per month?

sween64 2025-10-17 23:47

Just for live traffic.

AgentSmith187 2025-10-18 04:37

Are you sure about that i had live traffic on my 2015 Toyota with zero connectivity beyond Bluetooth, Radio and obviously a GPS reciever. These days I would use Waze on Android Auto/Carplay over the in car system 110% of the time and the mapping is a thousand times better and who doesnt love being warned about mobile speed cameras.

KeyAd8166 2025-10-18 05:54

New CarPlay also added widgets which i found it useful. First world problems but even can control home smart lights from the screen

I hire liked Hitler, so I'm happy with my VW.

One key difference: Elon is still tweeting.

There is a standard called RDS which published live traffic data updates as data streams over ordinary FM radio. Your car probably uses that.

BYDREAMAU 2025-10-20 01:35

I just switched to using my own SIM card instead of paying $10/month, works fine for most apps.

AgentSmith187 2025-10-20 03:04

That would explain it. I know it used to be common with earlier GPS devices but had no idea how it actually worked. But data plans back then we're not all that viable an option for cars.
