That should’ve been picked up during pre delivery inspection when the car arrived at the dealership. Saying that, not all cars get PDI done as soon as they arrive but pretty poor form. With the part being three months away and you having already taken delivery they could remove one from another car in their stock or arrange with BYD to get one out of un allocated stock. I was a pre delivery coordinator until recently, that’s how we would’ve handled it, not that we sold BYD

My experience was so bad with byd that I went with geely. Their dealership and rep were fantastic. It's been two weeks since I bought the car, and I still got a msg asking me how the car is and if there any troubles or if I need any help to swing by.
Bought a geely ex5 and it's been great

Fair trading is toothless and all the dealers know it. There is essentially no protection for new car buyers.

Then complaining when you got exactly that.

BYD customer service is the worst experience I've ever been through buying a car. That includes buy a car in a McDonalds car park.
I had to drop Fair Trading into numerous conversations before anything got done. Lied to by the sales person, dealer and Head Office on a number of occasions.
Great car, but I will never buy another BYD due to the experience.

Why then fair trading? Why not just copy ACCC?

Had a similar satiation (different Brand, different problem). I found dropping into the conversation politely that while i would like it resolved, I am speaking to the ACCC and a lawyer I use for different matters about my options” seemed to work.

It’s all dealers, all brands. Second car I bought new I just treated it as having no warranty and fixed a few niggles myself, and did the maintenance myself. Less stress.

I work in the service dept and have not seen anything good come from the Chinese cars , poor quality , poor to non existent after sales service. I really wish people would do their research before buying into these cars and look back on past history. It is a shame because they have the potential to be a long term good buy. But as always the dollar is all anyone cares about

While unfortunately and inconvenient, doesn’t appear to be a major failure, a repair some to be appropriate. It sounds like the vehicle functions just without air con.

Get a shirt printed with a slogan like
“Get a BYD and sit in service like me”
Then sit in there showroom, I am positive you will get a speedy resolution, don’t leave until you have it in writing.

On a glass roofed car in Australia, I wouldn’t say non-functional aircon is no big deal. The car will become absolutely scorching as the days warm up.

Dont disagree that the worst design feature is a glass roof like the idiots at Tesla had implemented in the hottest land on earth.
Again don’t think you in major failure territory though to warranty a refund or replacement.

Did something similar to my dads new Fairmont GXL , lime/yellowish colour with crap through the paint, so I went all over it and marked with a black marker all the paint defects. He drove it back to the dealership where he purchased a new company car every year and parked it out the front on the highway, went and had a coffee and morning tea, stuffed around for a few hours and then when he got back to his car the DP grabbed him took him inside and then asked WTF was he doing. He explained how I worked for a manufacture and had marked the paint because the service manager seemed to find it hard to find anything wrong with the paint work.
Needless to say he came home with a different car and his was repainted under warranty and then offered to me to give the ok. Dad wasn't a hard person (unlike Me) to get on with but he took his business elsewhere the next year and never heard from that dealer again, I'm sure they realised that they had cooked the golden goose

I am not Chinese but 100% agree with you, and I can explain why.
I design logistics and warehousing solutions for companies, including certain car companies amongst many other businesses.
The Japanese, Korean and European vehicle brands all generally range the full complement of parts. They do sometimes run short with newly released model's parts, and sometimes run short of parts for popular models too. But generally good parts backup for both maintenance and smash repairs for mostly quick service response.
However the Chinese brands are different. They only want to range the basic consumables here in Australia such as brake pads spark plugs, optional extra parts, etc, but then ship major parts from China for anything significant such as a transmission, engine, axles, panels, etc. So a 12 week lead time applies across the board for most major failures and smash repairs. This is intentional and done by most of them, all for cost cutting. They all do this and don't feel they need to provide a level of service beyond this. This means they are happy running a cheap business model that makes you wait.
For my work, spare parts warehouses for the Chinese brands are much, much smaller and limited in size and range compared to all the rest, even allowing for their having fewer models.
Having seen the data on this, I feel I can say buy Chinese on price, and repent at your long leisure & lead time, waiting on your parts to arrive on a slow boat from China. Reliability problems just add to this challenge for owners.
If you must buy Chinese, make sure your insurance covers car hire for smash repairs. And for reliability problems make sure you have a transport plan B.

I almost told them to shove the car.
Three contract variations as they kept on stuffing up. Asked to deliver the car without interior protection, but still charged me for it, and then they double charged for it, so that was another contract update.
My trade-in was signed over to them and I had a payout on the trade-in that needed paying. They forgot to pay out my trade-in so I copped a payment on a car I didn't legally own, but still have financial ties.
I then had to make formal complaints as they kept on slow balling the refund on the payment. Sales person and dealer both lied that it was processed, contacted HQ and they said it hadn't been processed, and they would take it off the hands of the dealer and get it processed. That was a lie as it took another two phone calls to HQ to get it processed.

A fringe who had a bad experience with a lemon car put up signs in bold lettering on all windows, windscreen from the inside detailing the problems including lack of feedback from management. He then went to the Dealership very early, got parking right by the main entrance and left it there. Paid up his parking fee to avoid being towed. By the mid day they had agreed to take the vehicle back and refund him.
