Any questions about the Sealion 7? Happy to share my experience as an owner!

BYDREAMAU | 2025-07-02 05:01 | 37 views

Hi everyone, I’ve been driving my BYD Sealion 7 for a while now and thought I’d open up a thread in case anyone has questions about it — whether it’s driving impressions, features, charging, comfort, or small details you’re curious about. I’m happy to share my personal experience and help anyone considering the Sealion 7 or just wanting to know more about the car. Let me know what you’d like to ask!

I keep hearing about how floaty it is? And the suspension being too soft? What has been your experience? I am in the market, trying to decide between tesla or byd

BYDREAMAU 2025-07-04 02:35

I’d say the suspension definitely leans toward comfort. It’s a bit softer than what you’d find in a Tesla, especially over bumps and rougher roads. That “floaty” feeling you’ve heard about is there to a degree, but it’s not extreme or unsettling — it just soaks up imperfections in the road quite well. If you prefer a firm, sporty ride, the Sealion 7 might feel a bit soft for you. But for everyday driving, long trips, and city commutes, I’ve actually found it quite comfortable and relaxing. The seats are supportive, and overall, it’s quieter than the Tesla on rough surfaces.

Taking delivery of mine next week. Can't wait. Went for the design as the AWD and tasty acceleration was just too much of a draw in. What's the cabin noise like on the motorway? can you set charging hours via the app so it only charges at certain times? Do you need the physical key on you when using your phone as the key? Also does the phone always need to be on the pad when used as a key?

AnyMovie340 2025-07-04 21:16

Thank you for this post. I am very interested in the car especially the AWD version and have a few questions: 1- what is the actual range you are getting from the car and at what settings (speed, airconditioning...etc)? 2-how is the infotainment are there some glitches here and there? Does the screen rotate by itself especially in roundabouts? Does carplay or android auto function smoothly? 3- Is the AC sufficient in hot summer days? 4- Did you buy a spare tire for the car or you are dependent on the puncture fixing kit? 5- Did you face any issues during your ownership of the car?

spikyone982 2025-07-05 03:47

Is the 7 less floaty than the 6? And our 6 does not fare well above 140kph.. its not very stable. Is the 7 stable around 140-150kph? Esp around the back end?

BYDREAMAU 2025-07-05 03:54

Thanks for the questions! Happy to share my experience so far with the Sealion 7. 1. **Range:** So far, I’m averaging around **400–420 km** on a full charge in mixed driving (city + highway), with the weather being cooler these past months. Speeds around 60–90 km/h help keep range higher. On highways at 110 km/h+ it drops closer to **350–370 km**. I haven’t driven much in really hot conditions yet, so I’m curious how summer heat might affect it further. 2. **Infotainment & CarPlay/Android Auto:** The infotainment system is pretty responsive overall. I haven’t seen major glitches so far, though occasionally the screen takes a second to adjust when switching apps. **Android Auto works wirelessly** and handles roundabouts or tight turns fine. The rotating screen is cool and hasn’t frozen up on me — I usually leave it vertical for maps. 3. **A/C Performance:** I picked up my Sealion 7 in April, so I haven’t had a chance to properly test the A/C in extreme heat yet because it’s been cooler since then. But from chatting with other owners, it seems **the A/C copes really well even in hot Aussie summers**. I’ll know more myself once summer rolls around! 4. **Spare Tire:** No spare tire in the Sealion 7 — just a **tire repair kit and compressor**. I’ve thought about getting a spare separately, but for now I’m relying on the kit. The under-boot space is a bit tight for fitting a full-size spare. 5. **Any issues so far?** No big issues so far. A couple of software updates have sorted minor things like Bluetooth pairing and some small interface quirks. Mechanically it’s been solid and surprisingly quiet and smooth, especially on rougher roads. Let me know if you’d like more detail on anything!

BYDREAMAU 2025-07-05 04:09

Congrats on your upcoming delivery — exciting times ahead! 🚗⚡ **Cabin noise on the motorway:** It’s impressively quiet. Even at **110 km/h**, wind and road noise are pretty low, definitely better than some other EVs I’ve driven. Rougher roads naturally create a bit more tyre noise, but the Sealion 7’s cabin feels solid and well-insulated overall. **Charging hours via the app:** Yep, you can **set scheduled charging** times using the BYD app so it only charges during off-peak hours. It’s been reliable for me so far. **Physical key vs. phone key:** * You **don’t need the physical key** if you’re using your phone as a key. * But your phone **does need to be quite close to the car** (like in your pocket or bag) for it to unlock. * When driving, you **don’t have to keep the phone on a pad**. Once the car starts, it knows your phone is nearby and you can just drive off as normal. If you’re using NFC key card mode, then you’d have to tap it against the reader each time, but for the Bluetooth key function via the app, you just carry the phone. Hope that helps — and enjoy your Sealion 7 when it arrives!

BYDREAMAU 2025-07-05 04:12

I’d say the 7 does feel less floaty than the 6. The suspension is firmer, and the car feels more planted on faster roads. I’ve taken my Sealion 7 up to around **140-150 km/h** a few times here in Australia, and stability has been solid, even at the rear. It definitely feels better controlled and less “bouncy” than the reports I’ve heard about the 6. Of course, it’s still not a sports car — you’ll feel some body movement over big dips or bumps at those speeds — but it’s safe and confidence-inspiring. Hope that helps!

AnyMovie340 2025-07-05 06:44

Thank you very much for taking time to answer my questions. Wish you all the best 🙏

ThePhilosopherKing72 2025-07-05 09:24

Thank you so much for a comprehensive response. Last question, does the app have security features, for example being able to remotely disable the car?

BYDREAMAU 2025-07-05 14:36

you too

BYDREAMAU 2025-07-07 02:41

the BYD app offers some remote features like checking vehicle status, locking/unlocking the doors, and climate control, depending on region and software version. But as of now, there’s no function to remotely disable the car entirely for security reasons (like an immobilizer).

BYDREAMAU 2025-07-07 02:43

but hope future updates can be added for remotely disable remotely disable.

Total_Stretch_4667 2025-07-10 10:07

At the end of a journey the car sometimes shows the trip data, as shown in the photo below. It would be good to access this information "live" as I was driving. I kmow there is the odometer and the KwH/50 miles, but does anyone know how to access this information as I drive? https://preview.redd.it/cvt8ldlwt0cf1.jpeg?width=2709&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2e65ea6128adab9598522dfefd95631e213cd40

BYDREAMAU 2025-07-11 03:17

I actually tried looking for this while driving but couldn’t find how to see the live data either. I’d really like to know if anyone has figured out the exact settings for it. I’ll keep experimenting and let you know if I manage to get it working!

supakila247 2025-07-13 04:43

I hear there is quiet a body roll during turning. How true is that?

james4bs 2025-07-13 22:18

Follow-up question - Where in Australia can we go 140-150 km/h? 😬 Any secret location/road?

BYDREAMAU 2025-07-14 23:36

Sealion 7 does have a bit of body roll if you’re pushing it hard through corners, especially in fast turns. It’s an SUV after all, so it sits higher and leans a bit more than a sedan or a sporty [hatchback.in](http://hatchback.in) normal everyday driving it feels pretty planted and stable. I’ve never felt unsafe or uncomfortable. Just don’t expect sports-car-level handling if you’re carving up twisty roads.

BYDREAMAU 2025-07-14 23:40

Let’s just say… strictly “in theory,” you could find some wide open stretches far out in the country where there’s not much traffic. But of course, officially, we should all stick to the speed limits. (And no, I don’t have a secret map… or do I? 😜)

james4bs 2025-07-14 23:50

Hmm.. I recently learned, the road between Adelaide and Darwin (A87) has a virtual speed limit of 130 kph in some large sections. So "in theory" we could touch 140 kph (using 10% allowance 😅) ?

BYDREAMAU 2025-07-15 01:02

You are correct, lol

acavka 2025-07-16 07:31

Thanks for the answers. I’m considering buying the SL7 and actual user reviews like this are invaluable. How do you find the charging speed? I live in Bowral and commute about 70km one way (so approx. 140km in a day) at highway speeds. It seems like I would be fine on solo days but the back to back days might start running into range issues? I would look to charge the car overnight from like 7pm to 6am etc. Also, is your version the one with the slightly longer range or the higher performance one?

Present_Toe_3844 2025-07-16 09:52

I'm thinking on the Sealion 6 - the charging of HV EV battery from the engine. How long does it take, what is the charging rate like? at idle? during the drive?

AlternativeUnit7040 2025-07-16 21:54

If you’re charging from standard house AC outlet then expect roughly 8 hours for 10 to 15%. Yes it’s slow. Hence why I’m looking into a dedicated charger. https://preview.redd.it/coeep5785bdf1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d73f36ae2e8b03b0198aa0fa0045cb8427efaa2f

BYDREAMAU 2025-07-17 02:35

I'm using the AWD version (the higher performance one), and so far charging overnight from 7pm to 6am on a home charger easily gives me a full battery — no issues covering \~140km daily. On back-to-back days, the range still holds up well, especially with regen braking in play. If you're mainly highway driving, you might want to factor in wind and elevation (that affects range a bit), but for your commute, the SL7 should handle it comfortably.

BYDREAMAU 2025-07-17 02:44

I believe the Sealion 6 (as a hybrid) uses the engine to charge the HV battery primarily during driving or when power demand requires it. At idle, it may charge slowly — more like a trickle — unless the system detects a need. Unfortunately, I don’t have exact kW figures for idle vs. drive charging, but from my experience with the SL7, system logic tends to prioritize efficiency and battery protection, so it avoids aggressive charging unless necessary.

2.43m per kWh is horrific unless it’s deep winter, Tesla Model Y is achieving 4+ in 15°c in AWD spec

SomewhereMean8781 2025-07-28 11:21

Regenerative braking setting. I have mine on high which is more efficient from a power conservation perspective. Also slows the car down faster when you release the accelerator

redditdeebz 2025-07-28 11:25

Ahhh noted, thanks!

[deleted] 2025-08-01 14:04

Just ordered today. How do I change the screen wallpaper to a blank black color or otherwise? Or load my own? I assume the dashboard background cannot be changed?

Training-Plenty7164 2025-08-04 01:49

Hi,  I just got my byd S7 view days ago. It is so smooth and light. But today, I found the steer is heavier. I tried to change between the driving modes, but no effect.  Any suggestions please?

South_Seesaw4233 2025-08-04 03:57

I’ve just got my SL7 and some weird things are happening. Whenever I charge or stop charging my car, my trunk will open itself at times. Any idea if it’s electronic issue?

Browncardiebrigade 2025-08-13 18:01

looking at a SL7 in Perth, dealer suggests the $425 to tint the front 2 windows, I assume I could get this done locally for less than this for 2 windows, but I am curious to know if you (or anyone) has done this with the dealer? Good idea or no?

BYDREAMAU 2025-08-16 08:00

$425 just for the front two windows does sound on the higher side. Dealers usually charge more because they outsource the job and add a margin on top. From what i noticed in Sydney, you can spend $300–$350 for higher-end ceramic films with better heat rejection/UV protection.

Altruistic-Play9100 2025-08-18 19:19

BYDREAMAU 2025-08-19 07:15

Yep, that’s the regenerative braking setting. Basically, the higher you set it, the more aggressively the car slows down when you lift off the accelerator, and it also recaptures more energy back into the battery.

BYDREAMAU 2025-08-19 07:21

Congrats! hope this video helps, [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INVhPgzk8BI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INVhPgzk8BI) You can set up your wallpaper at Themes section\~

BYDREAMAU 2025-08-19 07:30

Have you checked tyre pressure? if i were you, i will book a section with dealer just to be safe.

[deleted] 2025-08-19 09:14

Wallpaper/background for center screen change got it! Thanks. But the driver display (behind the steering wheel), can that background be changed?

BYDREAMAU 2025-08-20 10:23

I tried it myself but haven’t found a way to change the driver display background – seems like it’s fixed. Only the center screen wallpaper can be customised for now.

iamfromDenmark74 2025-08-20 14:58

Great - very nice :) Do you know if I can add a short cut to a contact person in my contacts / phone.

BYDREAMAU 2025-08-21 02:26

I haven’t found a way to add a direct shortcut to a contact on the car’s main screen. From what I’ve seen, you can access recent calls or use voice commands to call someone, but not set a single-tap shortcut yet. Hopefully that comes in a future update.

Due_Tie3079 2025-11-05 10:17

Hello On My sl7 european/romania the sunroof automaticaly is closing when I lock the car I remember it was a ☑️ sometime but I don’t remember where in the menu.🤦‍♂️ Can you give a guest??

gulaghad 2025-11-08 12:19

With the back seats folded, what is the boot length? Is it possible to fit Model Y air mattresses?

superminx 2025-11-08 19:40

I just picked mine up this week and it's been raining a lot in Melbourne and I find the car brings much more water into my garage than my Nissan did. The Sealion7 is smaller than my previous car. Any ideas why it carries so much water into the garage?

Brave_Complaint_4864 2025-12-27 18:53

Personally, ha ing had my SL7 for 3 months now (and having previously had a Tesla) I find the suspension way to "floaty", yes it's comfortable, but going round bends or roads that aren't perfectly smooth (such as in the UK), it can become unsettling and in my opinion, is far too soft/floaty, which results in the car feeling very in-planted.  I have the top of the range Excellence model, which is the AWD 0-60 4.5s version.

Brave_Complaint_4864 2025-12-27 18:54

Efficiency is awful, there's no 2 ways about it.  SL7 owner since September 2025.
