Sealion 7 - Slow Charging…

overpsi | 2026-03-01 19:41 | 34 views

Hi everyone. I’ve just picked up my Sealion 7 Excellence a few days ago. I’ve done around 260 miles in it and just did my first DC fast charge in it this evening. I have an E-Tron 55 and also had a BMW i4 for 6 months last year, so I’m not new to EV’s. I was however, disappointed with the charging speed this evening as it’s a fair bit slower than the charging curves I’ve seen suggest. Conditions : 37- 81% SOC 400 kW capable charger with nobody else charging (car is capable of 230kW peak aparently) 13C Had just driven it for 20 mins and floored it a bunch of times, so it won’t be “hot” but also not stone cold. It took almost 24 Mins and peaked at 133 kW. Am I being picky, or is that a fair bit slower than it should be? I know I didn’t start at a DEEP SOC, but considering it should do 10-80% in the same time, I thought that was poor. I didn’t pre-heat to be honest so maybe I’ll try that next time.

doesn't look that good indeed and not at all what i am used to see when charging my Sealion Excellence. the battery not having been warm enough might have been the reason, but then again, from 60%ish SOC the temperature should have been optimal, or did you start at near zero temperature?

It was 13C with a bit of wind chill. Felt a lot colder than 13, but still somewhat mild. I’ll give it another go this week as I’ll probably charge twice on a trip. Will pre-heat this time to see if it makes a difference.

I did a quick search and a few posts from this subreddit with others experiencing the same charge rate as you came up. Others also got near the peak under ideal circumstances where the battery was not cold. If you have a pre-heat function it would be worth giving it a try.

The maximum charging power of the Japanese version of Sealion 7 is 105 kW. So...you are lucky :)

The speed of the charger will depend on both your vehicle and the infrastructure powering the charger. Seeing as there was no-one else using a neighbouring charger, it sounds like the infrastructure was being throttled, which can happen at some sites. Try another site and see if it's just that one that's not giving you enough kilowattage. If not, chances are you'll need to precondition your battery to ensure it can charge optimally without any reduction in kilowattage borne from low temperatures.

Well… I’ve now done 620 miles and fast charged it several times. 1. Same charger as the original post. 57-93% took 30 minutes and peaked at 107kW. Was only pulling 45 kW at 85%. 2. 350 kW Gridserve (ABB) charger. Nobody else plugged in, took 30 mins to do 40-80%. Was only pulling around 105kW most of the way up and then dropped to 85 ish at the end. 3. Tesla gen 4 supercharger (250 kW). 25-90% Preheated battery. Took 34 minutes and didn’t really pull over 120 kW from memory. Also charged on a 350 kW Ionity charger but it was clearly limited. Would only pulling 75 kW at 20% SOC and spiked at 140 kW when another car unplugged… then straight back down to 75 kW when another one plugged in, so this one isn’t the cars fault. Either I’ve happened upon 5 crap charging stations, or the car isn’t doing what it’s supposed to. All after 1-2 hour drives, and some were pre heated for 30-40 minutes on the way. What would you do?

Another update… Managed to get a decent charge in on the way home. Drove for an hour on the motorway down to 8% and preheated for 45+ minutes on the way. Peaked at 230kW for about 4 seconds 🙃 but to be fair the charger was capped at 200kW. Anyway, it looks like it mostly charged at 175 kW and then tapered off to 100 kW towards the end with a few weird dips. Overall, 8-80% in 28 minutes. Which is not far off what it should do in ideal conditions. So were all the other chargers duds? Or does it only perform when you go DEEP SoC? https://preview.redd.it/ys58qgz5fang1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9b77ab484046598cfe0f312f08d91ac6c75b168b
