Locking the doors with the keys still inside.

klas82 | 2026-02-27 07:49 | 28 views

ATTO 3 this morning I locked the car and walked off. As I was walking away I shoved my hands in my pockets and realized my keys weren't there (left on the car seat). It wasn't any cause for alarm or anything I had the phone on me and if failing that I could just go get the spare key, or even the key card. I just honestly thought this was not possible, that the car shouldn't lock up if the keys are inside. has anyone else experienced this?

Strange. I’ve tired to do this deliberately and was unable to do it.

klas82 2026-02-27 07:58

This is what I mean. It shouldn't be possible 😥

How did you lock the car? In the door handle button?

James__TR 2026-02-27 08:17

Yeah, my door button doesn't even work if the key is in my pocket and I'm reaching out

Interesting_Branch43 2026-02-27 08:22

It would surely just unlock again when you clicked the microswitch on the door handle?

FuzzyIdeaMachine 2026-02-27 08:24

I also locked my kids inside the car to test what happens if you do that too. And now we know.

klas82 2026-02-27 08:26

Yes I use the door handle button most of the time

c-migs 2026-02-27 08:26

Wouldn't it just unlock again if you click the button on the door handle?

klas82 2026-02-27 08:26

No it didn't. Which I also find weird

pimpolho_saltitao 2026-02-27 08:57

The only time this happened was when I had the other key on me on ver y close by. Just tested it by leaving the key in the seat and could not lock it at all by using the button. If you are sure you did not have the other key on you id contact the service center about it.

Sounds like the battery in the key fob is a bit flat. Where in the car was the key when you locked it inside?

bad180 2026-02-27 09:32

Battery in fob could be low

klas82 2026-02-27 09:47

It was on the seat, Slid out my pocket. Never thought of a low battery I will go ahead and change that, It's been more than a year now since I had the car

James__TR 2026-02-27 10:21

Doesn't it set the alarm off?

James__TR 2026-02-27 10:24

The microswitch isn't supposed to work if it doesn't detect the fob on the outside of the vehicle, only way to unlock and lock when the fob is flat is with the NFC card or physical backup key... If you use the physical backup key to unlock I'm fairly certain it sets off the alarm until you put the fob in the centre console and start the car

FuzzyIdeaMachine 2026-02-27 10:26

Only if they try and get out. I mean open the door. It was beginning to sound creepy. 🤣

James__TR 2026-02-27 10:39

Child safety lock on the rear door should uh... Help with that

MulberryForward7361 2026-02-27 12:43

Can’t you unlock on the app?

2021Noob 2026-02-28 06:42

I do this when I drop my car off to get tyres or servicing, lock keys inside using the app, shop calls me when they're ready and i unlock via the app. They can then get in and use the key, handing it back to me when I pick it up. I tested this extensively before trusting that the process worked.

screenslaver5963 2026-02-28 07:50

Just take the door off a microwave and ask them to turn it on while you’re outside the car. Problem solved permanently.

deximat 2026-02-28 09:01

Probably, if you leave car for long enough handles will pull in without locking

CBlackstoneDresden 2026-02-28 11:46

Atto 3 door handles don’t pull in?

deximat 2026-02-28 11:46

Sorry, I assumed. I drive Seal

Mysterious_Equal_951 2026-03-02 05:15

if you didnt have the keys, how did you lock the car?

Wonka0998 2026-03-03 10:45

Yeah that's weird. It's impossible to lock my Tang if there's a key inside. One time I even thought it was broken because it wouldn't lock. It turns out my wife's backpack was inside the car and her key was in it. I took out the backpack and sure enough it locked right up. Maybe it's what people say and the battery of the key fob is low. Try changing it and see if it happens again. In my case, the key fob was in the trunk.
