Yeah that's insane. What model car is that?!? I'm definitely getting a window hammer thing ...
Looks to be a BYD Seal 6?
quick question What would be the most likely reason for it to smoke up that fast? I thought BYD Blade Batteries don't light up in flames and cut off around 60° C I'm sorry if I got it wrong, I am still a new owner and just started learning here and there.
Not gonna lie, I was sweating. The car is Dongfeng. eπ 007 (Yipai 007) uses an LFP battery from a joint venture between SAIC Motor and CATL, called United Auto Battery System (UABS). Thankfully, blade batteries have better safety.
Maybe it got poked. Like ‘hey, get on fire’. Just kidding. But this was really concerning. I also own a BYD seal 5 dmi.
Anyone know which country is this from?
Lithium exposure to air can cause rapid reactions like the video. That’s how fast a car can go up in smoke, and this isn’t a BYD. But indeed BYD uses the same style of handles.
Do people really don’t carry them tho !? Always had in my ice car and carry 2 in my atto 3
Lots of people don't it seems. I used to have one in my previous ICE car but I gave it away with it when it got sold.
Yeah looks very similar to the Dongfeng rather than a BYD
Yea seen many videos and they get stuck … and yea you should definitely order a few 😁!!
Literally heading to the auto shop in a few minutes! (And biking there haha).
I have always been concerned about it 😅 I love the fact that my Tang has normal door handles. I never liked the slicked door handles esthetically, but also because of the safety. We all know deep down that nobody is going to react well enough to those fancy opening mechanisms in a real emergency.
Haha nice one !
Blade batteries are *significantly* safer. I'm not sure how they do it, but they managed to pass the puncture test without thermal runaway or explosion. There is still obviously the risk of fires, but it's much, much less likely with blade batteries.
I've got an adequately heavy fire extinguisher in arm's reach ready to break a window. And deal with non battery fires I guess
It is insane that the car caught fire. There is a window cracker in the car. It’s between the driver and passenger, in the huge arm rest. Still it’s not great seeing a car catching fire like that.
Holy shit. What was stopping them all getting out the front door when he had it open initially…?
The car in the video is a Dongfeng YiPai 007. Has an LFP battery too but it isn't a BYD produced or a blade type LFP battery.
Yes get the hammer thing. There's one that pushes a pin into the glass that shatters it
My parents got one with their dolphin, a little hammer seat belt cutter, I’m surprised the don’t put one in the seal also
Oh! I wonder if it's in the little safety pack thing that came with the car. Never opened it, but will check it out.
Stella li replied in an interview that BYDs doorhandles will pop out mechanical during an accident so they can be opened without electricity. You can see it in this video https://youtube.com/shorts/gEx9LBScn4c?si=YUQMKeuBx3E7LbBe
This is why i keep a seatbelt cutter / window breaker tool in any car I own.
It's a nice feature of the Dolphin that it includes a hammer for the windows
That's good to know, as I own a Seal and was pretty worried that I wouldn't be able to open the doors after watching the post video.
It's plain stupid from the driver to stand out the car and accidentally closing the door. he should have known better as he had troubles keeping it open since the beginning 🤦
it does? where?
But why does a battery do that in the first instance?
Below the centre console in the back of the storage compartment, there is a little cylindrical device
Wow, that escalated fast! I have a window hammer in my glove box, exactly for this reason. Personally, I'm very happy they want to ditch hidden door handles!
You can hardly blame the guy. Nobody would think straight in a panic like that. It's quite evident on how they all stumbled over everything.
Short-circuit when the battery is punctured. There’s a lot of energy stored in it.
Good god, they cut that close
I thought these car will have manual latches to open the door manually? (Although could be hidden like for tesla)
On the inside, all they had to do was pull the handle twice and it'd of released the door. But for some reason the people in the back wouldn't do it. I think that is what the driver was signalling in the first few seconds after his door closes. But looking at them pull the people out, it appeared as though they didn't want to help themselves either. They looked like dead weight but were clearly still alive. Especially that last person.
BYD Seal is a sedan, the EV in the video is a liftback, which others have pointed out it's from DongFeng, model YiPai 007
They come with a hammer
Thermal runaway was so fast. But it ignited cause of something else b4 crashing?
this is why these handles will soon be banned. China already has. They are a safety issue.
Large center console blocked the passenger and rear seats access
There was a person in the passenger seat who died
For this car (not a BYD) the internal latches wouldn’t work without power
Ah right. I thought it was a byd. My mistake!
Does it? Really?
Don’t think like that. He was completely out of mind. People get lost often in stressful situations.
