BYD charging does not go beyond 10 kW

Free_Calligrapher686 | 2026-02-01 21:30 | 23 views

Hi everyone, My BYD Seal U came with a charging cable (Type 2) with the specifications shown in the photo. I charge mainly at home, but when I use 22 kW AC charging stations with the supplied cable, the charging power never exceeds 10–11 kW. I checked the car settings and the "AC Charging Limit (A)" is set to MAX. Is this normal behavior due to the on-board charger/supplied cable, or are there some settings or limitations I'm missing? Thanks to anyone who can clarify 👍

LoL You know that the car can charge AC with max 11kw? So that’s normal behavior. If you want to charge faster, you need to charge DC…

It's limited by the charger (EVSE). Even if the cable and the car's OBC (on-board charger) support 22kW, there's nothing you can do if the public EVSE is limited to less or doesn't support 22kW. Try a known 22kW charging station with the same cable to test and confirm.

You’re wrong, cause the seal u comes with 11kw obc, not 22kw, therefore its that car that limits…

SleepyJohn123 2026-02-01 21:50

Seal U can’t charge faster than this on AC

SexyDraenei 2026-02-01 22:25

yeah, the OBC only does 11kw on 3ph and 7kw on single phase. pretty common arrangement.

SexyDraenei 2026-02-01 22:26

literally showing you a pic of the charger label saying its 22kw. but its the cars OBC that is the limit here, it only does 11kw on 3ph.

Basically all BYD cars are single phase AC so they cannot use the full 3 phase power at L2 charging stations. Edit: newer models have 3 phase 11kw AC

toto-nator 2026-02-01 23:07

What, where did you read that nonsense? AC over 22kw (or 11kw) Wallbox (=Typ 2) is of course 3 phases for all BYDs. OP is talking about 22kw/11kw connection. 1 phase of course is, if you use 7kw house socket.

The cable description just says it is for use to max 22kw by its technical requirements. That doesn't mean the car can go up to, nor the source can supplies up to.

Basically the car can do: Single phase - 32A which is around 7kw 3 phase - 16A which is around 11kw It can't do 32A on 3 phase, which is 22kw. The cable you have can do that on a car that supports it.

Soldiiier__ 2026-02-01 23:25

I have wondered though, can it do 11kw on 2-phase? (ie 7kw+7kw but then capped at 11kw as opposed to 7+7+7 but still capped at 11kw)

Eastern37 2026-02-01 23:33

I didn't realise that newer BYD's have 3 Phase A/C, that's good to know. My Atto 3 and other similar aged cars (pre 2024) only have single phase 7kw AC charging.

Soldiiier__ 2026-02-02 00:30

and 7kw single phase is also 32A, significant as regular outlets are generally 10amps

SexyDraenei 2026-02-02 03:06

forget about kw and think about amps. 7kw is 32a single phase. 11kw is 16a 3phase 22kw is 32a 3phase

Suntzu_AU 2026-02-02 03:28

Something you probably should have checked before purchasing? 7kW or 11kW is pretty standard across BYDs.

Eggie87 2026-02-02 05:03

Please read ur manual......

Soldiiier__ 2026-02-02 05:48

Yeah I understand  The 11kw max on the BYD is basically 3* 16a circuits I guess my question is If we do 2* 32a circuits would it charge at 11kw still? (Circuit max is 14a, but the BYD can only do 11kw on AC) Or is multi phase limited to 16a per phase

Free_Calligrapher686 2026-02-02 06:12

So it's not a question of the cable, but of the car. If I took a friend's BMW x1 cable and used it for my car, it would still charge 10 kW, and if I gave mine to him, it would most likely charge at 20 kW (when he charges it at the same station, it delivers 20 kW, still with the cable they gave him). Do I understand correctly?

Actual-Ability-5354 2026-02-02 06:16

Car is limited to 11kW, even if you put higher cable or charger it wont exceed 11kW

Harvest87 2026-02-02 06:16

The BMW x1 had the optional 22kw on board charger. If your friends car has that option, you can switch cables. But maybe you should look up what these cables cost, before giving it away for free 😅 And if you lease your BYD you will have to return it with the original cable in the end

Free_Calligrapher686 2026-02-02 06:36

No no I just wanted to try and see if it would charge my car and if so consider buying a 22kW charging cable at this point

toto-nator 2026-02-02 06:44

Yes I know

SexyDraenei 2026-02-03 00:15

yeah no way to really know how it would handle a 2ph supply, but I expect one of 3 outcomes. * 16a per phase and just get you 7kw * 32a single phase, again 7kw * try to do 3ph and fail and stop charging.
