What's the biggest competition to the Sealion 7?

Domonet | 2026-01-28 13:56 | 24 views

I am getting close to making a decision to replace my Niro EV with a Sealion 7 when the lease ends in the near future. Everything I look at just can't compete. The closest I think I have found is the Tavascan, but the interior is a little funky and it doesn't have V2L. At the moment, I think the only thing that could be interesting competition is the Xpeng P7+ but that's not in the UK yet. So tell me - if you own a Sealion, what cars were in the running before you made your decision, or do you find yourself wishing that you had got a something else instead?

Xpeng G6 and Tesla Model Y

Shem68 2026-01-28 14:48

Xpeng G6 and Model Y. I was considering the SL7 and went with a Model Y in the end. Much more efficient and thus cheaper to run, better range. Slightly less confortable but way more dynamic and engaging to drive. I like the design of both cars. The Model Y misses a HUD, but appart from that the package is very similar (in things that I care about at least). Driving dynamics and mostly efficiency (thus running costs) killed the Sealion 7 for me.

I have briefly looked at the Model Y but I'm not a fan of the ultra minimalist approach. The lack of a HUD is also a big negative. The efficiency is a concern for me, but having looked at the difference in running cost as I can charge cheaply at home, it really doesn't seem to add up to enough in real terms for me.

I have had a look at the xpeng, and a few of the head to head style videos online, and the lack of HUD is a negative, but while they are close, I find I rate the comfort of the SL7 more. I replied on another comment regarding the Model Y. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Why not Audi Q4 e-tron sports back. Never compared the numbers and details. I'm just saying from the first look in size and class the Sellion 7 would fit.

I've tested Sealion 7, Tesla Y, BYD Seal, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Audi e-tron ... Seal was the winner for my needs (sporty driving / handling / cornering / all features / great warranty / great price = price was 10% below Sealion 7), the rest is actually a no-go for me. Sealion 7 is a nice car overall, but what you like - comfort - is also it's curse, suspension is too soft and handling isn't the best as the car also weight quite a lot. If you want a family car - acceptable, but there's no fun of driving it (cornering / handling / sport driving). Tavascan is actually ... being produced in China = extra toll (= price is ... overpriced) + some other things. Main question is - what are your priorities regarding car? Secondary - check your local market about prices. Actually the electric cars are quite expensive in UK as i can see, or maybe they are so cheap in Denmark - here Tesla 3 Standard cost 31 000 pounds and Seal 313 hp version - 37 000 pounds, so it also makes a difference as for the moment Tesla 3 is like a very good product if somebody wants a great price / value ratio.

In my market the Zeekr 7X is priced the same as Sealion7

Domonet 2026-01-28 16:56

Cool, I'll take a look thanks

Audi Q4 e-tron 55 is a totally overpriced car (cost 25% more than Sealion 7) with poor features (f.e. manually adjustable seats, no memory option) and old info system, it's like a dinosaur in present times for a price of gold - the Q4 e-tron is on the market since 2021 in the same form (insane!). Also uses NMC batteries which are more risky, for the past 3 weeks where i live there was a fire of batteries in Skoda Enyaq and Audi e-tron.

Kia EV6 is in the same sort of area and what my other half is looking at if she doesn’t get a Sealion 7.

I really wanted an ev6 when I got my niro and I was fully planning to upgrade to that especially with the facelift model, but... I know the original model had recurring issues with the iccu and was hoping it was fixed with the facelift but now seeing people with the facelift reporting the same fault I just can't justify it. Yeah it's replaced under warranty etc, but I don't want that known unreliability hanging over me.

Domonet 2026-01-28 18:20

My criteria - first and foremost, family car, so smooth ride and good noise cancelling. I want a larger boot than the niro (475l), retain HUD and V2L (tho V2L is negotiable). Heated seats front and rear/steering wheel. Strong audio system. Daughter loves glowies and the big sun roof. Range can't be less than the niro. Frunk for cables (having just a cubby hole under the boot cover like xpeng g6 is not helpful when the boot is full of stuff). AWD is a nice to have, as I live on a steep hill which can get icy in the winter so the additional traction would help, but it's not essential. Politics of Tesla aside, I'm not a fan of their ultra minimalist approach and wouldn't go for them in any case - forget no HUD, they don't even have an instrument cluster 🤦 SL7 ticks all the boxes for me. Lower efficiency is an annoyance, but the bigger battery still gives more range, and Bjorn Nyland did a low speed "Sunday drive" proving that when you aren't flooring it always and driving sensibly/relaxed it does have great range. I'm just trying to make sure I'm not being blind and missing an alternative option to look at. As for money, looking at all options (lease PCP etc), but in the UK a 1 year used SL7 Excellence is about £33-35k or around half list price.

If those are your preferences then it looks like the Sealion 7 is the car for you. I've been analyzing electric car market since 1,5 year everyday - first because i wanted to buy an EV for myself and now because cars (were) are my hobby. I think i'm one of few who knows all the Chinese brands like SAIC (MG, Maxus), Geely (Polestar, Volvo, Zeekr, Lynk&Co), Chery (Jaecoo, Omoda, Chery), BYD (BYD, Yangwang, FangCheiBao, Denza), Xiaomi, Leapmotor, Xpeng, etc. + European ... and i cannot see a better car on the market for you, especially that buying an used (practically new) BYD is not a problem due to a very long warranty (just be sure that it's valid due to car's service - if it was needed due to mileage). As you said - battery is big enough. Personally i don't care about efficiency at all - driving 140-145 km/h on a highway, due to incredibly low cost anyway, if it takes 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 kWh per 100km ... it's like nothing anyway, especially compared to petrol. **A TIP:** If you can save a lot of money - you'll be fine also with the 313hp RWD version. I've been using HUD on my previous car for 5 years ... no problem at all that i don't have it on Seal, "no difference". Lower weight RWD version has few profits: \- cheaper insurance (for me 530 hp version was 40% more expensive - insurance price) \- lower weight = better handling \- lower weight = better range, so the difference between 91kWh and 82,5kWh isn't that big \- RWD is not a problem, electronic is so strong that i'm not able doing donuts ... on snow :( \- i personally don't like front axle to be drive'able, prefer to have it on rear only

Great information and clarification. As I said before on possible example, but I saw even in measurements can't reach Seallion 7

MutedSignificance486 2026-01-28 22:25

I was contemplating the polestar 4

Domonet 2026-01-28 23:02

This was one that I wanted to look at but I'm having to travel a bit further for one of those dealerships.

mlhbv 2026-01-29 16:47

Yes. Was on my shortlist too. Ultimately I scrapped it based on personal preferences in terms of looks

Mindless-Band-5743 2026-01-30 04:44

Thanks for the detailed info

Carrier-51 2026-01-31 10:26

Do you have a link to the video showing the range that person achieved with their Sunday driving?

Domonet 2026-01-31 10:35

https://youtu.be/6vM5l6Nh_p0 Here you go. Think it's design spec as you can see the 4.5s on the back but he states it's an 85 (?) kWh battery

Bright_Housing_8831 2026-02-01 17:41

Isn't that a whole different price tag?, I think polestar 2 is a more similar price though

Bright_Housing_8831 2026-02-01 17:52

Sometimes their sales and service points have the strangest locations. The one they have in Belgium - Gent is just weird. In a narrow street in the city center, without any parking spots. And that's quite literally the only one in the entire province. There are Volvo garages nearby though that do maintenance for polestar, but they don't show or sell polestar cars directly. If you have to go through all this trouble even just to have a look at their cars, ... then I'm out as well. It's a shame, I was very interested, and maybe would have been convinced if I could just sit in one.
