Prediction: by next reg cycle, we will have BYD in F1, likely thru Haas

Cralido | 2026-03-10 19:51 | 17 views

With EV being the car industries biggest growth area, with China being the largest EV market, and with BYD being the largest EV manufacturer…surely F1, marketing and engineering focused on advanced translation into road cars, it make sense. Why BYD: most advanced EVs, vertically integrated (entire supply chain from engines, batteries, and semiconductors), already dominate in largest market, market entry and cycle more mature which allows it to offer economical vehicles with advanced technologies and luxury options, entering European markets (great for F1 exposure), has diversified business (batteries for cell phones, heavy equipment and locomotive) to offset costs, et. Funded own track for testing, car and driver development. When asked, has flirted with idea of entering WEC and F1. Why Haas: Gene will be in 80s, has no planned successor, Haas links with Toyota which BYD established a partnership. Gene hates consortium funding, was a self made engineer, does not come from wealth, has similarities to BYD founder. F1 needs China: largest most mature EV market, recent viewership jumped >30%, new growing Motorsport market. Audi and Cadillac entered F1 to development and promote their EV, both are targeting their road cars in China. Whereas BYD sees China as one of their more saturated markets so they in turn are targeting Europe and other countries. Could enter as 12th team but seems easier and timely to target Haas with their Toyota partnership to share experience and cost.

Toyota has just put in big investment and I feel is more likely to buy Haas out. I see BYD starting from scratch or buying Alpine before Christian Horner has the chance

Academic-Golf2148 2026-03-10 19:59

I see BYD in FE as a more realistic option. They have not really worked on high performance ICE cars afaik. If a Chinese manufacturer does enter into F1, I think it's gonna be Geely under the polestar/lotus brands.

Cralido 2026-03-10 20:00

Agree with you just as strong argument, just thought since BYD and Toyota already have a BTET 50/50 joint venture (BYD batteries with Toyotas engineering and manufacturing expertise) would may make sense to partner up to offset cost and maybe accelerate return.

Tanocchio 2026-03-10 20:00

Don’t know why we can’t just have BYD replace VCARB. I hate the idea of sister teams.

LsG133 2026-03-10 20:02

And what of the owners of vcarb and their assets?

Skyenar 2026-03-10 20:07

Is this a prediction? I read a news story today that said they were interested.

Tanocchio 2026-03-10 20:07

Tbh I have no clue how any of this works id just like to see VCARB be absorbed by BYD

LsG133 2026-03-10 20:08

Well they are a privately owned entity so there’s that

peadar87 2026-03-10 20:09

#makevcarbminardiagain

Cralido 2026-03-10 20:13

BYD does hybrid too, but definitely agree Geely another sound, possible contender to enter F1. Just thought that BYD has more money to flush, >800 billion mkt cap vs 22 billion.

freerangehumans74 2026-03-10 20:16

Toto has entered the chat.

Cralido 2026-03-10 20:18

Can you let me know the article. I find the whole China entry interesting. Any mention of how…exploring Haas, Alpine, or from scratch 12th?

Skyenar 2026-03-10 20:22

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-03-10/china-s-byd-explores-f1-entry-in-first-auto-racing-push Unfortunately it is paywalled

Magog14 2026-03-10 20:27

They'd get paid for them obviously.

Cralido 2026-03-10 20:28

Thanks!

DishQuiet5047 2026-03-10 20:32

The Flavio way, I like it.

Holofluxx 2026-03-10 20:45

They'd have to sell their team for that to happen though

jrileyy229 2026-03-10 21:30

It doesn't say anything anyway... A car company had an internal discussion about ideas to market their cars in any or all of race car world.  An off the record source... Allegedly, told some journalist... And it got plastered all over the Internet  Journalist could have made it up as far as we know ...

Key_Beginning9819 2026-03-10 21:43

The more the merrier i guess

Zed_or_AFK 2026-03-10 21:49

China can definitely throw money and manpower at a problem, and get decent results out. If they are really serious and liquid enough for a 10-year dedication, then they could surely do well.

ominousrock 2026-03-10 22:44

Nah, BYD will start their own E-Truck Racing Championship series.

jaysvw 2026-03-10 22:53

Another day, another prediction that Gene Haas is about to sell his team. Some day a Redditor will finally be right, but I don't think this is the one.

Cralido 2026-03-10 23:08

Ha ha, I agree, Gene is stubborn and has solely owned all his businesses, however he’s getting older and from what I’ve read, none of his children are involved and he has no declared successor. Just thought he may see some similarities and respect for founder, Wang Chuanfu, he too was self made (actually an orphan).

Brendan_Lopez 2026-03-10 23:48

And Cadillac have invested in Toyotas wind tunnel in Germany.

Kisuliiii 2026-03-11 00:16

But the sponsor on car is just GR and apparently Toyota and GR are now more of two different companys than before so can anyone clarify was it toyotas investment or GR's or are the two still the same? Or did toyota do Hondas move, put money in something and then be fuck it we are out.

No_Cherry_1423 2026-03-11 01:32

GR is just a separate brand within Toyota

Syncro6 2026-03-11 02:49

i don't think Redbull will let that happen

Legoman511 2026-03-11 03:56

He’s got no kids and no successor. Hell hold out for Toyota to take over or instead of haas Ferrari it becomes haas Toyota

Amat-Victoria-Curam 2026-03-11 04:08

The only two teams that could possibly change hands in the coming years are Alpine and VCarb. And I just don't see BYD entering a competition that doesn't put the EVs front and center, like FE. I am however sure that we will see a Chinese manufacturer in the near future, possibly Geely.

BetterBandicoot0 2026-03-11 08:03

GR is for Toyota what AMG is for Mercedes.

mtmttuan 2026-03-11 09:52

Viewership of Formula E is nothing compared to F1

fastcooljosh 2026-03-11 14:56

BYD could become the 12th team, I would bet money on Toyota joining the sport as manufacturer again through Haas.

HollywoodBrownMusic 2026-03-11 20:13

I hope not

Mediocre-Visit-6237 2026-03-12 22:13

Allegedly BYD is interested in Aston Martin

Cralido 2026-03-13 00:25

That’s interesting, thanks for sharing. Definitely easier if they buy in vs start from scratch.
