Dolphin Surf - fogging problem workaround.

Short diagnosis & fix from mates on Polish EV board. Problem: Fogging is NOT caused by the AC or evaporator, but by a software/control of the air recirculation flap. The car keeps the flap at about half fresh / half recirculated air, so humid cabin air is partially reheated instead of being removed. Symptoms: fogging in cold weather, much worse with 2–3 passengers, improvement when rear windows are slightly opened. Workaround procedure Set A/C heat level to 9 or less to turn off partial air recirculation. Remove passenger side glove box and cabin air filter. Locate the stepper motor controlling the fresh/recirculation flap. Unplug the motor connector – the flap stays fully open. Result: proper cabin ventilation, no window fogging, A/C optional in winter. Description in photos were machine-translated, so apologies for 'engrish' 😉

A simple way to reduce fogging that works for me is keeping the heating to high and only changing the fan speed on my BYD Atto 2

So @byd should be fixing this.

Forgive me, but have you tried asking the dealer if there might be a problem with the engine settings? I'm curious. Is the recirculation valve essentially not working properly?

It is according to first photo - full external air inlet available only at level 9 and below. Dealers / authorised services even if trying to help, has their hands tied by official service bulletins. 🤨 Problem is reported by few dozens of owners and it's weather-dependent, so it's definively not a single occurence of malfunctioning flaps.

Maybe this allows drawing more air from the outside, but AFAIK Atto 2 has ECO A/C mode that does this (mixing air) deliberately rather than Surf/Atto1/Seagull. Or it has heat pump while smaller brother relies only on PTC heater.

It would be interesting to understand if all BYDs do this, and above all to understand their logic!

Thanks for the info. I've had the Dolphin Surf Boost for four weeks now, and the fogged-up windows are really annoying. I'm not sure if I should just try that, though. You can reconnect the plug, I suppose. Still, it would be better if BYD improved this.

We had issues with fogging for the first few drives but don't have issues now. We leave fan speed at 3or4 as a minimum and currently in winter heating no lower than 12. Edit: this is with circulation set to pull air from the outside and aircon off.

It's a feature, not a bug. Because they're saving money by installing resistive heating instead of a proper heat pump, they prevent the cold or hot outside air from entering the car.

But then does the motor connector have to be reconnected or is it left disconnected?

Bolo92 2026-01-15 10:57

Left disconnected

Tall-Sheepherder-563 2026-01-15 10:58

Left disconnected, no error on dashboard, but air recirculation will not be available.

Same problem here. Outside temp atm is around 5 to -5 celaius. Best way I found to keep windowns not foging is keep temp at 1, and fanspeed at 2-3. So. This is a problem that can be solved with software update long turn that will control the valve better? By disconnecting connector ur stoping an option to have air circulation and only intake of fresh air from outside is possible if i get it good? Thanks for info. This is very annoying. Problem on all dolphin surfs or? If fan is off windows fog, not fogging only when fan is on.

Regarding this problem, I tried to contact my dealer, and I was told that this type of anomaly is most likely caused by the fact that the internal air recycling function can be active when stationary or at low speed, because in reality, he does not physically close the valve 100% but can partially and therefore by deactivating the function within the climate control settings this problem should disappear, but I have never tried.

How can I safely remove the glove box? I can't find a guide and I don't want to break anything.
