Toyota Aqua 2024 (G Grade) vs. BYD Dolphin 70. Which is the smarter buy in SL right now?

Ok-Confusion5264 | 2026-03-19 07:04 | 13 views

**Looking to buy a new vehicle and I’m torn between the 2024 Toyota Aqua G Grade and the BYD Dolphin 70.** On one hand, the Aqua is the king of resale and reliability here, and I don't have to worry about long trips. On the other hand, the Dolphin is much cheaper to run and the tech inside is years ahead. For those who have switched to EV in SL: How is the charging network for long trips (e.g., Kandy or Down South)? And for Aqua owners: Is the 2024 fuel economy actually hitting that 25–30 km/l mark in Colombo traffic? **Which one would you pick as a daily driver?**

Definitely Aqua, combustion always win

Wouldn't it be better to wait till the aqua facelift enters the SL market. When facelifts are introduced usually the non facelift drops in price.

Nothing does even 20km/l except for bikes

Dhaitsu Mira, more than 20 Km/l Renault, 20km/l. 29km/l in highway. Yaris hatchback, does 24km/l The Suzuki altoJapan version which 660CC + Hybrid .. this one does 35km/l + The new cars \[2022+\] are lighter and very fuel-efficient

Go for an Aqua

Bro I used to have a Suzuki hybrid that did 29 km/L measured at the pump from Colombo to Anuradhapura. Not slow driving either, cruising at 70kph. Took around 4.5 hours. And it was 6 years old at that point. It’s a shame i wanted more power and sold it

DaddyKashyapa 2026-03-19 12:10

Get the Aqua but sell it after 5 years. You won’t lose much cause it is a Toyota so there is that too

ilikecloudzz 2026-03-19 13:05

Of course I said in Colombo, most of the 1.5l hybrids do at least 25km/l on expressway

ilikecloudzz 2026-03-19 13:08

Well those all are 3 cylinder cars and I'm not really in to them

DaddyKashyapa 2026-03-19 13:39

The new Vezel does around 22-24 in normal evening traffic in Colombo, at like 6pm

Yes, aqua has a good resale market. But what I'm worried about is that it should be an enjoyable to use for 5 years.

The new Vezel does 20-21 from Pettah to Piliyandala each day. Even with rush hour traffic. Drives aggressively to block tuks from cutting in as well. Still ot works well above 20 kms per liter. Highway + long trip mileage must be 25+ I believe

I think there are Aqua facelift models in the Sri Lankan market. Yes, generally the prices should drop. But here the old model prices are still remaining same and the new facelift model prices start at a higher point.

True! I cant believe why people who rides hybrids says there vehicle do over 20km/l even in cities, riding Axio hybrid for 5 years now and it has never have done over 20km/l in heavy traffics in cities

The used market will come crashing down , once these new vehicles come into the used market. Recent pertrol crisis is accelerating EV purchase in SL, With more EVs in the road , charging network demand will push for more chargers naturally. Go for electric.
