ATTO 3 - Not working in any fast charger

Low_Risk_3476 | 2026-01-17 19:06 | 28 views

Hi there, I recently got a used ATTO 3 in the UK. I took it for a longish journey for the first time. I presumed if I needed to charge it somewhere I will use a rapid charge. I did have to take a detour on the trip and therefore needed to charge somewhere before going home. I took it to a Tesla supercharger place, 2 different Instavolts, A BP pulse and a few other places. Nowhere could I get a connection and charge started. Everywhere I tried was 160kw +. I had to pay about 15 different pre authorisations as I tried multiple chargers and different places, driving around in the middle of the night in the cold and rain in an unknown city. I was down to a few miles when it finally did work on a type 2 22kw place outside a retail shop. I had to wait 2 and half hours in the middle of the night at that speed to get enough charge to return home. Even the navigation, as I was going to some of these places, was saying to me "your vehicle is not compatible at this charging point" and to consider re-routing. Am I missing something? Have I bought a piece of junk that's incapable of being fast charged on the public network???!!! The dealership never mentioned this and I never came across anyone saying the Atto 3 can't fast charge. Or am I missing something or doing something incorrect?? This kind of experience makes you want to smash your EV to pieces and get a normal car.

What model year is your car ?

Maybe check this out? https://ev-database.org/car/1782/BYD-ATTO-3 You will get all the info you need about the types of charges that are possible. Fast charge is always DC, so check for a compatible loading station... Hope this helps...

Thanks, it still doesn't make sense why it didn't connect to any of those faster charging points. Even if it couldn't reach the top speeds

Atto3 uses CCS for fast charging up to roughly 90kw, works very well and there are charging maps out there where you can filter to only show CCS and above certain speeds.zapmap is pretty good. Also use the charger symbol in the map while driving, it shows compatible chargers. Tesla wont work and BP are a nightmare in my experience, nothing to do with the Atto3 though.

Avoid BP. Tesla doesn’t work with atto3 Loads of fast chargers out there. My local service station has some that I go from 20-80% in about half hour at

I tried loads..It must be something with the car then

Maybe ask the dealer?

Low_Risk_3476 2026-01-17 21:21

Yes, will do.

Of course they can DC fast charge. The only exception was with Tesla v4 chargers and older 22-23 MY atto 3, they were incompatible. In your case it seems like a faulty DC charging controller. Call BYD service and arrange repairs, under warranty. You could charge of AC 22kW charger, so AC charging is working, but it can only charge atto3 at 7kW rate.

Interesting. A couple of folks in this thread said Tesla doesn't work. I'm in Australia and while I know there are a few Tesla only Tesla chargers, many are available for all vehicles. (I believe the price is a bit cheaper for Teslas). And personal experience... I have charged my Atto3 at almost max (70~80kW) on the Tesla fast chargers a couple of times now.

If it was just Tesla I would only be mildly annoyed. It was all fast chargers..But at least I know now it's just an issue with my car..I hope once it's fixed it will work on Teslas as well

Low_Risk_3476 2026-01-17 22:43

Thank you, okay will do 👌🏼

You should definitely get that checked out at the dealership because it's not normal. It looks like nobody else in the comments understood the problem. You're in the UK. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think by law all the fast chargers there use CCS2 and all the cars sold locally in there also must have CCS2. So there should be no need for adapters or anything like that. All cars should be able to communicate perfectly fine with the charging stations, except for Tesla since I think they still have some proprietary stuff going on and they're not compatible with all cars. So either ALL of the different charging stations you happened to try were faulty, or there's something wrong with your car. I'm think it's the latter.

Low_Risk_3476 2026-01-21 15:18

Thank you, yes so do I. Considering the number of chargers I tried there's no way they were all faulty. Yes they were all CCS2 and none could communicate with the car. Finally I found a slow charger that could though. It's so annoying considering it was the 1st time I ever needed and tried to charge it on the road.

Wonka0998 2026-01-23 18:13

Slow chargers (AC chargers) go through the car's on-board charger that converts the AC input into DC out for the battery. Fast DC charging goes straight from the charger to the battery. There's gotta be something wrong with the fast charging port of your car. That's why I'd say it's always better to at least just test the fast charging before you actually need to use it. I've never needed fast chargers, but I tested a couple of times with different providers just to make sure everything is working properly.

Yes you're right. But quick question, I remember it did fast charge at the dealership. They used the cable the car came with though as it was untethered. Why do you think that worked and not the tethered ones I tried in the outside world?

Wonka0998 2026-01-26 01:10

Honestly, not sure. It could also have just broken between that time and now somehow.

Low_Risk_3476 2026-01-26 01:13

That's true, I'll be getting it looked at this week. Thank you.

Fluid_Company4197 2026-01-29 19:53

Something like this one? https://www.reddit.com/r/BYD/comments/1jxajbp/byd_tang_2023_cannot_fast_charge

Low_Risk_3476 2026-01-29 23:26

Not quite. On mine the charge doesn't start at all ever.
