Jaeco ev5 vs byd atto 3 ?

ausroachman | 2026-03-18 12:21 | 8 views

As the title explains , looking to get my first ev and considering the above 2 . Looking for a small suv style vehicle around the mid 30000 range and both seem to fit this criteria . Both look like solid cars , and the jaeco on paper seems to have better range ? But curious to see what other people think. It will be mostly used for city driving and small trips but the occasional long travel . Anyone tried both and have an opinion on which is better ? Thanks

I just bought the J5. The atto was so much more expensive for the same luxuries.

The J5 is kinda infamous for pretty shitty charging speeds, not great software and poor regen modulation. The paper spec seems good and so are its appearances/perceived build quality, but execution of features is poor. European reviewers have generally panned it, but if you can live with the compromises because the pricing is too good to ignore, it’s decent enough. The Atto 3 is better on the software front but is quite long in the tooth now, and also has pretty slow charging. The Evo version that’s already out in Europe is far better (200+ kW charging speeds, RWD, native Google Android Automotive OS with Google services). Have you looked at the Leapmotor B10? It’s got much better driving dynamics (RWD and suspension that isn’t as bouncy as most other Chinese cars), pretty good software and ADAS execution, and far better charging curve.

my husband and i tested out the jaecoo Ev 5 and was pleasantly surprised at how nice a drive it is. My first time driving an ev and he didnt have a high bar for it but liked it. Nice looking car, nice interior. As for the atto 3 cant really say much about it. We decided on the sealion 7 for our next car.

Thanks for the suggestion , I’ve not heard of leapmotor before

I've got a 2023 Atto 3. I've not tried a J5.  If you can find a 2nd hand Atto 3 around $30K in good nick I think that's better deal than a brand new J5, based on what I've read in reviews and it being $8K cheaper for basically the same thing. I would not recommend buying an Atto 3 brand new today. It's not cost competitive against J5 and EX5 anymore.  The Atto 3 Evo 2026 reboot should fix that if they keep the price, but if you're buying today go 2nd hand or take the J5.

Leapmotor is owned by Stellantis, who also owns Jeep, Chrysler, Alfa Romeo, Citroen, Peugeot… They might need some time to establish their presence but they probably are here to stay for the long term.

Car wow in the UK gives the J5 a good wrap …https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sx0bJsTPccA&pp=ygUQY2Fyd293IGphZWNvbyBqNQ%3D%3D …we have ordered it

Jaecoo J5 doesn't have connected services in Australia. Atto 2 has full suite with native navigation with EV route planning, native apps like Spotify, YouTube. You can unlock and lock the car via phone app, precondition, monitor car doors, windows statuses, main systems health status, locate the car on the map. None of this is available in Jaecoo j5.

I have a Jaecoo J5 and love it, and am about to order a second one. Tried more than 20 cars, including Atto 2 and 3. Convinced I would buy Atto 2, but it drove poorly. Atto 3 was okay, but interior ugly. Jaecoo is awesome value for money. Was forced to test drive it, but after 20 odd test drives, and going straight from there to BYD for secondary test drives of the Atto 2 and 3, I found the Jaecoo was the best for the price point. Needing to buy a car later this year for my teenager and might buy a third J5 if the EX2 isn’t good value. Regarding the app - you have to work out what are your must have features. I don’t care if my car has an app. It turns on/off as I approach it so is always cool when I get in and when it’s charged it turns off. Wireless software updates don’t matter either - any updates can be done for free if I can’t wait until yearly service.

Why do you need suite of apps when everyone has Car Play? Having a suite of apps was ‘special’ ten plus years ago before Car Play existed, but no need now. Walk up, phone auto connects, everything I need is on the car screen. Do people actually use the car apps over the (probably the same) apps in their phone?

A_Ram 2026-03-18 21:34

I prefer not to connect my phone to a car. It is much easier when it is all in there. Car Play also won't know your car state of charge for EV charge stops planning. Sure there are workarounds. Then with connected services you can remotely monitor and control your car. Very handy when you want it pre cooled on a hot day. Some people care about this some don't. Jaecoo j5 is a good option for people who don't.

I don’t think a new atto 3 is mid 30k. I think it’s comfortably in the $40k+ category.

Throwing Aion UT into the mix. Better specs than either J5 or Atto.

No good buying a used atto3… battery degradation and warranty being gobbled up.. a jaecooj5 is way better

SufficientReport 2026-03-19 00:08

I saw one of these driving last weekend, really good looking car in that colour they are using for the promo images (crimson maybe?)

ausroachman 2026-03-19 00:38

Does look like a solid alternative . Seems like it’s cheaper than both as well. Any impressions on its drive ?

CarPlay cannot automatically add charging stops to a trip because it does not know what the battery level is, and it cannot “talk” to the car to get consumption data/SOC to automatically add charging stops and estimate how long to stop at each station. CarPlay also cannot pre-condition the car battery automatically prior to arrival when a charging station is set as the destination. Without a car app, you cannot remotely precool/preheat the car as you’re walking back to it either. So on a hot summer day, you’ll walk right back into a blast furnace instead of a nice cold cabin.
