Power with out battery atto 2 dmi

Hi everyone, I’m considering buying a BYD Atto 2 DM-i, but I have a major concern about how the car performs once the battery is depleted. I did a test drive and loved everything in the car. The feel with the battery charged, but I couldn't test it at low %. My main use is for weekend trips (550+ km). My fear is that once the battery hits the minimum , I'll be left with only the 97 hp ICE engine to move the car for the remaining 200-300 km. The salesman keeps insisting that the car has 212 hp available, but I’m skeptical about how the car behaves in the real world when overtaking trucks on two-lane roads (national roads) with a "flat" battery. Does anyone here have experience with long trips in the Atto 2? Does the DM-i system manage to keep enough 'electric juice' for safe overtaking even when the battery shows 25% or less? I don't want to realize after buying it that the car feels underpowered in long trips. Thanks a lot in advance

The ICE does not primarily drive the wheels, instead it is used as a generator for the battery. The electric motor will drive the wheels most of the time, unless you floor it, then it can temporarily drive the wheels. So if the battery is 25% and you floor it, do you have enough power? Yes, it will take power from the battery and use the direct drive of the ICE. Once you drive normal again, it will recharge the battery. A good explanation from Autocar: A recap, should you need it: DM-i (that’s ‘Dual-Mode - Intelligent’) is BYD’s take on the PHEV powertrain, as launched in the Seal U and since extended to the Seal 6. Sort of a fusion of Toyota’s ‘self-charging’ hybrid system and Nissan’s range-extender-esque e-Power one, it uses a petrol engine primarily as a generator to top up an underfloor battery, which in turn powers the electric motor driving the wheels.  Usually DM-i cars drive on electric power (working as a series hybrid), but under heavy loads and at high-speed cruises the engine can also be connected to the drive wheels to give the full combined power output and maximum shove (working as a parallel hybrid).

I drive a Seal U dm-i *Boost*: Smallest engine. Smallest battery. 2 ton car. I drove it [from Scotland to Italy and back](https://www.reddit.com/r/BYD/s/Aq1Cm5nKkd) as a ‘soft hybrid’ (i.e. regeneration only, no plugging in) last summer and it was *fine*.

I see, thanks for the explanation, I think I better understand now, like the ice won't never be alone, specially in floor It situations. I understood from the beggining that this dmi system IS primary electric which I truly beleive IS a Game changer. Thanks!

Wow! Thats a trip! Thanks for sharing the adventure! I Will Take a look more closelly. Thanks for sharing that you didn't find any Major issues! Feeling a bit more releive

What we found was nice was that the battery management keeps some charge back - by default ~15% to 20% - but it will add energy from the battery to the output of the ICE when needed… and then charge it back to battery from the engine, while driving, when cruising again.
