BYD ATTO 1 owners opinions

flawlessStevy | 2026-02-18 05:26 | 27 views

It’s been about a month - Australian & NZ owners, how do you feel about your new Atto1s? Favourite features? Biggest duds? What’s missing? I really enjoy driving the car, used ICC to drive most of the way home during rush hour today. Pretty good experience. Needed to charge my phone during the trip - useless turns into a molten bomb. Aircon, average - can’t point them in any useful directions. Wish the charge pad was cooled. Need to remember to turn off the driver monitoring features. Fucking hate them. Wish I could set an aircon temp. Wish it was a heat pump aircon tbh. Road noise can be loud and speakers are a bit shit to drown it out. Apple car play Bluetooth a bit sketchy in connecting. Wish the seats were cooled rather than heated. Still enjoy the car a lot. Hopefully they keep improving software side of it all.

My mum has one and it is really fun to drive. I think it’s a great car for an urban environment. Great car for the money imo

stevo1661 2026-02-18 06:05

It’s great so long as you stay in town, don’t drive over 80kmh and your destination is less than 40km…. So basically it’s pointless … buy a KIA Picanto and buy petrol. Resale on the Kia is strong, the Atto 1 will be close to zero.

Daleabbo 2026-02-18 06:16

The Atto 1 is cheaper then the picanto, has crap all maintenance and service costs. Why get a picanto? More cost short and long term...

flawlessStevy 2026-02-18 06:18

I Drive 100kph every day. Wtf are you even on about. Clearly not an owner and pretty delusional. I think you might need help

Suntzu_AU 2026-02-18 06:45

I've been thinking of buying one but at $31,000 drive away in Australia, it just doesn't add up. My sister-in-law got the latest BYD Dolphin premium for $38k drive away and it is a phenomenally good vehicle for the money. I can't see the value proposition with the Atto 1

blackpawed 2026-02-18 06:49

KIA Picanto seems to be the call sign of anti EV trolls, its their goto "gotcha" cheap car thats better than an EV in their head. Edit: Holy shit, their post history is a dumpster fire 🤣 >"The moon landing? What moon landing. Vaccines? They work. Covid? That’s real. Earth flat? No. I’m a climate scientist btw. Fossil fuels are good for the planet."

flawlessStevy 2026-02-18 07:12

No worries. It’s not for you. No biggie.

flawlessStevy 2026-02-18 07:32

Agree it’s pretty good value. Decent features and really enjoy the size and performance.

I’ve had it since the end of December. I like how it drives and how high it feels when you sit in the car. I only ever use ICC when the road’s not crowded and on an 80+ road, which I find a bit jerky going around curved sections. On the range, I’ve also been getting pretty good kWh/100km economy (better than the claimed figure) and find the range to be a bit more generous. I haven’t done a lot of 100-110km/h driving. I have only needed to charge at a public charger once so far. It’s a second car for us, and if we’re covering a big distance in a day, we can just take the Prius. Same downsides; I think the air duct whirlwind sound bothers me the most. I found wireless charging to be pretty shit but doesn’t bother me too much. AC has been okay for me, and I haven’t had to crank it up all the way except for a few days. Although the 2008 Prius definitely has a better AC. 😂 I wish the cup holders were the same sizes - one in the back is slightly smaller and doesn’t fit my water bottle… The centre screen & telemetry thing died 1 week after I got it. Took 2 weeks for a local service centre to repair and it’s been going fine. One last thing is the centre storage area is a bit weird to access? Overall, I’m quite happy with it. **I might be a bit biased since the car I replaced with Atto 1 was a 11 years old Fiat 500 with much shittier (but fun) drive feel, TERRIBLE AC, ++high cost of fuel & random repairs. I’m leasing it and might replace it once the lease term’s up. Quite looking forward to the EV market in 5 years. Some interesting offerings on the horizon.

flawlessStevy 2026-02-18 07:52

Pretty much agree with most of this. Certainly a good point on icc cornering, although it’s 95+ that the problem imo. Eco is good sitting at 11.5 on a 70km ish round trip each day. Mostly moterway. Air duct, yep - On and off. Speakers too shit to drown it out. Good point, storage too hard, I’ve scratch the charger and key bays already.

ATangK 2026-02-18 08:06

The icc issue isn’t exclusive to the Atto 1.

ATangK 2026-02-18 08:07

It’s just the new galmobile isn’t it? No more jazz.

blackpawed 2026-02-18 09:18

11.5kwh/100km? thats pretty good.

Signal_Reach_5838 2026-02-18 09:51

Isn't the Atto 1 $26k?

geoffm_aus 2026-02-18 10:49

Trolls should know better than to make their history public.

Have only had it for 300kms. Pretty happy except with the Apple carplay, annoying to have to tell it to connect half the time. Yes the charger makes my phone too hot although I have an inappropriate case for contact charging so I find that always happens. I’ve gotten the driver monitoring to just do a dull beep instead of talking which is a big improvement and you only have to do it once, not every trip, I’m sure I am going to see what happens if you tape over the camera. I hate that it turns the music down when I reverse or for safety announcements. Love that I can crank the charging down to a trickle so that it just absorbs my excess solar. I don’t like the tiny back window and I don’t feel like my view out of the back side windows (ie, when headchecking) is great either. I guess I’ll adjust but this is bigger than my last car, I would have liked more glass. I have had some errors like unable to get V2L plug to disconnect but nothing a few suggestions from chatgpt couldn’t figure out. The so called “smart charger” appears to be a total crock, as I have not been able to get it to stop charging at the specified time except for with a timer at the power point. Would love to hear from anyone who cracked the code so that I can charge off peak. So weird if they included this and it does not work at all. In general I feel like I’m driving the cloud from Monkey Magic. Replaced a 13 year old Mitsubishi i-Miev which I still love.

wvwvwvww 2026-02-18 12:44

31 is the driveaway price for the premium. Stamp duty, rego, etc.

Liquid_Friction 2026-02-18 14:03

Carsauce did a review not great 😕

flawlessStevy 2026-02-18 17:34

Yep. Prob cos I just let icc manage the drive

Signal_Reach_5838 2026-02-18 17:55

Yeh ok. Cheers

Omshadiddle 2026-02-18 20:37

I test drove the Picanto and preferred my 2011 Nissan Micra, so not sure that’s the answer, especially for those specifically looking for a little EV! Going to test drive the Atto1 and the Inster.

Thick_Advice4686 2026-02-19 02:37

So far so good. Got the black premium and am very happy.

turtleshelf 2026-02-19 07:16

Only just got it, no problems so far apart from the weak and hot wireless charger. AC just fine for me, haven't noticed the air duct noise even at high speeds. One thing that surprised me was how little the driver attention stuff annoyed me. I forgot to turn it off on one drive and it was just a quiet little noise, and every time it went off it was 100% right - I had taken my attention off the road for too long. Going to leave it on and see if it stays useful. Haven't noticed lane assist kicking in yet, also going to leave that on until I find it annoying/unhelpful. Turned off the speed limit detector because it doesn't work very well. About to go on a road trip up the east coast of Tassie so maybe I'll report back after with more reflections.

wvwvwvww 2026-02-20 11:21

Report back for sure.

Quilgy 2026-02-21 09:04

Ours is on the boat (Premium). When we test drove it it still wasn't connecting to any remote services but I'm not sure whether that was just because no owner had been assigned to it. Can you start the AC say 10 mins before getting in the car, to cool it down?

Kabal303 2026-02-22 04:05

I got the premium in pine lime last week - i've only done roughly 200km. Things i dont love \- The phone charger sucks... i'm kinda tempted to find a way to unplug it so i can just plug my phone in with a cord in that location lol. \- On harsh bumps like speed bumps in carparks, the "thunk" sound it can make isn't the best \- Air conditioning isn't amazing. It's ok if you don't let the car get really hot but if you sit it outside it takes a LONG time to get the car cool again. - also the fan speed options are kinda limited, i'd like a "0.5" setting and a "1.5" if that make sense... \- The brakes are not the best lol - i feel like i keep almost driving into ppl lol. This is mostly a a me problem though, i'm used to my Focus RS which has very good brakes Things i do like \- It's such a great little car for driving around the inner suburbs in peak hour - fits everywhere, plus electric is just nice at low speeds. I find myself really caring about being stuck in slow traffic because its just so easy to drive. \- It's extremely efficient at urban speeds - costs me basically nothing to drive to work, and charging on just a wall plug will be no problem for me \- The 360 camera and stuff is very good for a car in this class I know a lot of people will be like you can spend lik $7000 more or whatever and get a lot more car - and thats true you can, but $7000 is still $7000 - i'd rather have the money in my pocket and drive this little thing around i got nothing to prove with my daily driver lol

Kabal303 2026-02-22 04:10

You can - long press on the 'circle' button on the FOB. Presumably you can do it via the app too but they still haven't connected my app after a week

flawlessStevy 2026-02-22 04:25

Yep can do on app and set it longer than 10m too.

flawlessStevy 2026-02-22 04:27

Check what setting your brakes are on. I feel I haven’t had a single issue with the brakes. They need to do something about the phone charger. I think I’m going to complain soon. It’s just useless.

turtleshelf 2026-02-22 05:51

tl;dr: Great car, lovely to drive, perfect for Tassie conditions. Just got back, had a great time. Here are some unorganised thoughts in convenient plus and minus dot-point form: \+ Atto 1 handles so nicely on the windy east coast roads, low centre of gravity from the battery makes it feel nicely planted despite bouncy suspension. \+ Did not notice the infamous wind tunnel noise at all. Paused music etc to listen for it specifically on highway stretches and could not hear a thing. Definite wind noise around the side mirror, but nothing crazy or unpleasant. \- Wireless charging pad may as well not be there. Didn't even prevent phone drain while android auto and navigation was running, got super hot, ended up turning it off and plugging in to USB. Far from a deal breaker but a little disappointing. \- Speakers are pretty shit. Not the worst I've heard once you adjust the equaliser (pump the lows and highs and drop the mids) but I'll definitely look at replacing them if possible. \+ Never had a problem with android auto, navigation and podcasts the whole way there and back, never any connection issues. In fact it's a little eager to connect as soon as you get in the car and I need to tone it back a touch. \+ Handles bumpy dirt roads like a dream. That soft bouncy suspension just eats up corrugation and pot holes, really impressive ride where I wasn't expecting it, great news for exploring Tas. \+ Comfortable seats, had passengers in the back and front at times and all remarked on how much space there was, and how comfy the seats were. Slightly sore shoulders at end of drive but I think that's just on me not dialling in wheel and seat position yet. \+ Charging seems quick. Stopped midway to charge, got from \~60% to almost full in around half an hour\* at a chargefox station (\* I think, i just had a quick lunch and a coffee and it was at 98%) \+ Had lane assist and driver attention running, neither was a bother. Will probably turn off lane assist as I hate the feeling of it taking control but I don't think it was overly aggressive. Driver attention seemed honestly on point. \+ Bit of rain for the end of the drive, automatic wipers were responsive, and car continued to handle well despite me pushing it a bit. \+ AC more than adequate, despite the fairly hot and muggy day today. Didn't need to bump the fan above level 2, heaps of headroom for hotter weather. \+ forgot to reset odometer for the trip but my overall average consumption is at 14kWh/100km, giving roughly 308km of range from a full charge, and that was with plenty of overtaking up hills and fairly quick highway driving. I was in eco the whole way and never felt like I needed more juice. Most of my driving will be in urban settings so imagine average range will end up much higher. That's all the thoughts I have, happy to answer questions or anything. Great little car.

I noticed all the stuff about the wireless car charging and thought I would throw in my 2c on the issue. Its not just the Atto 1 I assure you. The one in my Kia EV6 is similarly mainly a good way to bake the phone rather than charge it. In fact im yet to find a useful wireless car charger especially during summer. Heck during summer even wired charging is often a losing battle due to heat issues. I find often I need to put the phone on the passenger seat and turn the ventilated seats on while running ths AC to allow the phone to gain useful charge without overheating. In a previous vehicle without ventilated seats I needed to mount the phone in front of an AC vent to allow it to charge properly on the go during summer. Its not a problem during winter.

AgentSmith187 2026-02-22 16:53

Used to be a used Corrolla that was 1 or 2 years old and miraculously 1/2 the price of new was compared to any available EV to prove the EV was a bad option. Way back when I got the Kia EV6 AWD GT-Line I was told about this amazing Corolla and how stupid i was to buy the EV6 as the vehicles were totally comparable....

turtleshelf 2026-02-23 00:47

To connect the services you'll need to purchase a BYD data subscription via the app once your car is activated, for about $10 a month. It only really gets you on-board navigation and spotify, so I don't think it's essential if you're comfortable with android auto etc.

nobelharvards 2026-02-23 12:20

Do you mind specifying whether you chose Essential or Premium? That will help put the energy efficiency, range and charging numbers you've already provided into context.

turtleshelf 2026-02-23 13:01

The premium!
