Help. Atto 3 has bricked at Tesla charger (compatible with BYD).
BYD helpline suggests we need a jump start. Does anyone have any ideas on how to restart. We had 10% battery when we attempted to charge.

You need to jump start the 12v battery. This can be done with any car, EV or ICE as long as you can find a jump start cable.. The 12v battery is under the hood for Atto 's built before 2024.

Turns out our 12V battery was stuffed, only 18 months old. NRMA changed it out for a new one. Now at home trickle charging as I have no faith in Tesla charge points as this is the 3rd negative experience with Tesla and our BYD.
Portable jump starter pack might help too. Given holidays it could be worth just buying one. Also, as others suggested lock the car, go for nice lunch, then come back to see whether 12v battery is in better shape. Sometimes just the summer heat gives battery extra juice, or it might charge itself from the high voltage battery (though i’m unsure how it behaves on 10% charge). All the best.
Sorry to tell you it’s the BYD not the charger. There’s known BYD compatibility issues that havent been resolved, apparently newer BYDs are more reliable at it though
2022 BYD Atto 3? They have a known hardware issue with Tesla Superchargers with no retrofit to resolve it.
Is the jump start process for EVs the same as ICE?
Yep. Same as ICE but no heavy cranking. A 12v jumpstart power bank is all that is needed to start the car.. I should add that the newer EV's have lithium ion batteries for 12v operation and they are usually located at the back of the car away from the crumple zone. They should last a long time and won't need maintenance.
It’s a 2023 model. Looks like it was coincidental that the battery died at the same time we were trying to charge at a Tesla charger. Saying that the charging station went offline at the same time…
Buy a portable 12v car jump start pack for this reason. Some people forget that EVs need the 12v to run the electronics and you can't start the car if the 12v is flat.
sorry for your loss. sounds like you should trade in for a used 2022 tesla <3
Will do!
Tesla has the most reliable chargers by mile. I remember seeing something about a retrofit for the atto 3 but I may be wrong.
The traction battery won't charge the 12v battery unless the main contactors are closed. The contactors need the 12v battery to close, and probably also need the main body computers to start up, which also need the 12v battery.
Lol blaming Tesla.
Blaming the Tesla charger is exactly what I would expect a BYD owner to do
Is there some kind of beef between Tesla and BYD owners I don’t know about? Sorry if I insulted Tesla. Was very tired and emotional at time of post 😂
Good to hear that NRMA were able to address and fix it just like any ICE car.
Tesla owners are hypersensitive about criticism.
12V battery is a known issue in the BYD's and they are starting to use lithium ones. You don't need high CCA like an ICE you need deep cycle for an EV.
This. The 12v battery runs everything the traction battery can’t
