Heat pump AC in BYD takes a while to kick in. Best to remotely turn on via app to cool the car down before you get in

What colour is your Atto? Darker colour cars get hotter in the sun.
Do you have tinting?
BYD use the AC system to also cool their batteries, as the batteries get hotter in this temperature they will also be using up the AC's capacity.
AC systems also work well when travelling at speed there's a need to move air through the condenser for the AC system tomwork efficiently.

What a heap of shit car if it can’t blow cold air straight away in Australia.

Drive for 100m or so with the windows down to flush the hot air out of the cabin. Toggle the Auto switch so the thermostat kicks in. I've noticed that it sometimes blows hot air, like the thermostat gets jammed. Toggling the auto usually fixes it.

No aircon should feel like air in a hot day! Is the driving mode on ECO? It tries to reduce AC to save battery (though still should be acceptable comfort). Is fan on low? Air circulation is crucial. Imagine putting ice inside cabin. Without air circulation ice is freezing cold but passengers sweat of heat. Put on auto or max. Does it have"max cool" mode, puts temp to low, air flow to max, cabin circulation (no fresh air) to break the heat quickly. Heat resistant tinting (not just the smoky tint but actually IR reflective to stop UV and IR traveling inside the carbin are essential in our climate, do all windows and front/rear windscreens. Protects interior as well as yourself.
Overall, the AC should be very effective and certainly not feel like air. Something is wrong. If you can reproduce the issue then take it to servicing. It's important because your AC is also part of battery thermal management so it's more than convenience on the table. If you cannot consistently reproduce then buy cheap thermometer and record temp at airvent on numerous occasions to share with them. To prove your point but also help them diagnose.

Yeah, check whether your A/C is set to ECO or Comfort.
Had this problem in my Sealion 7. Switched to Comfort and instantly felt the difference.

Base white model. Have after market tint.

I'll give that a try. It has been quite cold prior days, today being a hot day, it struggled.
Just did not feel cold

Mode is sport
Fan was on 7. Temp on low ( below 18 )
Tried fan lower just to see if it was maybe going to fast. No change
I was dripping sweat an hour in the car

Wait. Does aircon have own mode? Seperate from car mode?
KeyAd8166
2025-12-14 11:24
In SL7 it's car mode which also impacts AC, but AC has Max Cooling mode too.

Car mode is on sport. I'll try different mode and check settings in aircon.
I asked question to see feedback before I waste time or money.
I was going to get an aircon person check.

Even eco mode shouldn't be that bad. Why not warranty instead of AC specialist? It's only 6 months old and probably never properly tested AC in summer.

Time and distance.
The closest BYD service place will be 1.5 h on a good traffic day.
So, all in all, taking a day from work will cost me around 1k for the days loss of time.
Cheaper on my time to just go local. Have it checked. If broken, and replacement is costly, will then consider warranty

I don't fully understand this - we're in Australia, you wouldn't need to take a completely unpaid day off?

I work for myself. Independent software engineer.
If I don't work, I can't bill.
I'd likely look into all this post Xmas.
Since all my clients close shop for the period it is imperative I increase my buffer $$ value to ensure I have enough to cover bills and mortgage payments through Jan as well.
Just the wrong time to just take a day of no income generated.

Not sure if you got to try it but I wasn't talking about drive modes. In the car settings there's a switch for the A/C. Economical Mode is the default and it sucks for Australian summer. Comfort on the other hand works like you'd expect.

Oh ok, definitely.
Can spend the day doing this when your clients are closed. Makes sense.
Best of luck

In our 3 year old Atto3, in Perth yesterday in the same heat, I had to turn the temp up from 23 to 24 because it was getting too cold with the air con, so suspect you have a fault.

Great, thanks for that. I did use a thermometer (one from an aquarium) and it claimed air coming out vent was 18c. I tested the device against two portable aircons I have, each set to a diff temp, and the measurements was spot on.
I also tried myCar locally (they claim to service BYD), but 2 phoned just said no, we don't look at BYD aircons.
Struggled again today. I was sweating like a rapist on trial in teh car, aircon pumping, and it just felt like a fan blowing.
So, just to know, I will go canningvale in jan, and have it checked to be sure.

There were a few reports of some earlier Atto3s being delivered with faulty air con, I'd hoped it was sorted out by now.

All air-conditioning in all cars are heat pumps. Typically they're not reverse cycle heat pumps that many (most) electric cars have, but they are all heat pumps.

He did say on for 30mins… thats pretty shit and i would call service center to see what they can do like topping up coolant etc.

The air con in my Atto 3 has been terrible since day 1. Unless it's at the lowest temp with the fan on 4+, you may as well not bother.

It’s literally impossible for any heat pump to immediately blow cold or hot air, no matter the manufacturer.

Get it checked out with BYD quickly. Mine did the same when nearly new and was a significant fault that needed fixing as it was a potential fire hazard as well. All was quickly covered under warranty.
