BYD Atto 3 (Yuan Plus) Any Use for Infotainment Screen

I'm sure the next update will come with a change... This is probably because they don't want the driver to be distracted...

Well, that'a a one way to think (I mean that's your opinion, I don't wanna mean anything). But if they wanted the driver to be free from distraction, they wouldn't use a laptop size screen in the first place. Makes too much distraction for me. Every time I turn it off, it keeps opening and illuminating the dash. Besides, whenever I want to make a change for A/C, I need to open it, then go to A/C page, turn my head like 45 degrees to right, walk through menu. They would have placed physical buttons if the main reason was distraction. My theory is, in order to make a difference and became more appeling, they placed a huge screen with a turning function. But didn't work on functionality. When people saw it in ads or reviews, people liked it at first and that was enough. I think this is the reason. As far as I know, due to complains, rotating screen will no longer exist in upcoming models. A function that I never understood, even the stated reason. Whole screen is a huge light source without any function. Why I am supposed to pay 3rd party apps to use my product.

Floating widgets would be great. Would love to see seat position etc as an icon.

Like the car, it is a good buy. But the infotainment is build to make the owner hate the car. It wont even let me be in peace without its light.  If we cant use it, why have it?

The UI is optimised for Android Auto or Carplay. You can however sideload apps fairly easily if you can follow instructions. See [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svxgEqbGx94&t=11s) for details. As far as Youtube goes you can download the app from the BYD store on the Info screen.

What do you mean unusable? You can turn the map on and then it is. The map software is great. Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto runs great. As far as watching YouTube when driving, well that’s just dumb. AC works with the 3 finger method also so not a massive distraction

Thanks for the info. This is my third EV. But my worst experience with infotainment system. \- There are only 8 apps in BYD store. I dont have any intentions to karaoke in my Atto 3. BYD only allows me to use paid third-party apps (youtube premium). This bothers me a lot, and I absolutely do not want to make this payment. Being to pay extra to use a product I've already purchased is ridiculous. \- Even connected to Android auto, only google maps pops out. I can not have any other app on my phone. There is no mirror screen like usage. I didnt see any single benefit of android auto. I can't access gemini by button or voice command. I can not understand why I cant have the same experience. \- I know, I can upload 3rd party apps. But in order to do so, I have to change software version of my car. Install extra programs. I fear that may cause issues with waranty. If it is an android tablet, why cant I use it as such? I think best option is to get a extra plug in mirror screen box.

Not sure were allowed to talk about side-loading on the BYD forum. I would absolutely love to and have done so (Stardew Valley for the lols), but I think its one of the rules.

Side loading is discussed a lot here and has never worried the mods. There is nothing illegal about doing this

You don't need to change the software version. What I linked to is good for all versions. However if you let us know the model of your car I can likely link to a better firmware version to use than what you have now. It appears at this stage that you are using a Chinese firmware which has limited connectivity.

2025 model year BYD cars do not have map in my country. 2024 model years and early 2025 model years had it but not late 2025 model years. I dont have built in navigation. Did you had a chance to ride a peugeot? That would give you an idea about useful screen. I can't custumize it, I cant change background. I cant remove tire pressure monitor, cant choose widgets (besides I dont have). If you dont use android auto (I dont) and do not have built in navigation, whole screen has no use except parking. 3 finger works because there is no physical buttons. If you like it that much, could you suggest me any use? I very rarely use navigation. Which screen should I use? Which widgets should I use? How can I use this empty space on middle?

I find Android auto to be a bit buggy, cuts out occasionally and has worse audio quality than a basic bluetooth "music" connection. I agree with OP that having an empty desktop as default is annoying. Why not fill it with A/C and radio/BT information and buttons?

I dont have apple, I have samsung. Using android auto, doesnt allow me to use add custom widgets. I can only use a couple of apps from my phone and can't use any app that wasn't default. The limiting factor here is not me wanting to use the features it does have. The problem here is my car doesn't allow me customize anything to my liking. Can't monitor any spec, can't have fast call persons, doesnt let me add anything, doesn't have built in navigation. Even when I turn it off, it keeps turning on. So, could you please tell me what is the point of having a huge screen that has %70 unusable part, and below part has fixed widgets such as tire pressure? Works only as a distracting light source. Ps: How did you came to conclusion that I get embarrassed? And also I will remove the plastic film when I have time to buy a screen cover and get it on my screen.

I am not advertising anything, I stated that I dont want to change software. I just want to learn how people use this screen for their liking.

Dear Dungeon Anarchist, all I want is to have a better experience with my car. There is just a huge screen with useless empty space on it and I just want to custumize it without risking my waranty. I dont know if Android and Apple makes any difference elsewhere but here doesnt make any difference. So, changing my phone won't make a difference. Plus, If I have to choose between having changing my car and using an apple, probably I will sell my car. But thanks anyway.

I can load games like Stardew Valley and play as I wait. I didn't install a third party OS, it runs on the stock BYD v3.x.x OS and I still get updates. I also bought this game on Steam, so I do support the devs; but this is just an example of how you can take advantage of the Android base BYD is actually running on. Netflix runs smoothly but its a PITA to maintain each update manually. I'm trying to find the limits of the car myself and have a raft of APKs I'm planning on installing (Radiogarden, Aurorastore, Bully, Google Maps, Wave, YT music, PVZ). Not sure a Peugeot could do this.... Now I'm trying to figure out if I can get the car to take on a controller so I can play the game comfortably.

Thank you for the answer. First, there is no way to upload any app without changing version and uploading sth to have 3rd party apps for the byd I have. Only 8 apps at the byd store. Only some apps run when android auto is connected. In our local groups and forums only option people find is to change version and add on extra programs. I cant understand this: if the infotainment system is so good, why I have to stare that screen with a huge unusable gap. Only tire pressure and a couple widgets on the buttom. Or maybe we have our byds with lower spec aystems. Peugeot sure couldnt work the things you say. But it was at least custumizable. Had sth like 20 widgets to choose for, navigation plus you could add fast calls and many things. Place them on screen. Plus you could custumize driver screen. Can you check the picture I uploaded with the original post and tell me if it is possible to not to get frustrated to be forced to stare this empty screen.

By the way, I need to use it when driving the car. System may be good but does it allow you to use itself? How many widgets you have?

For me, I use android auto so most of the time its used as a split between a media player and gps. IfI wasnt using AA, I use a custom wallpaper and it becomes like a picture frame (but you can also set the background as a live map). Widgets are the same as yours more or less. I don't have any apps in the BYD store, so I have to put 3rd party apks manually using my laptop. The reason for the large screen is because its more clear when navigating and when using the exterior cameras. Since screens nowadays are cheap, I suppose BYD decided to use the biggest one they can, also meaning they don't have to put much effort in designing the center console. Funny story about the BYD SL7 when it first launched. If you cornered too hard, the screen would flip into portrait mode without you doing anything because the display motor is still connected to a gyro, and the android base thinks you've rotated your tablet (https://youtu.be/K4Ii52iq9Io?si=V2moK5q7vQA26ccd&t=128).

What car is it and model year? If it is atto 3 very different with mine. Or use a piece of cloth to cover it. I really like the car but inf. system is such a shame.

It’s a 2 week old seal. I just got some static film from Amazon for £4. It’s normally for blacking out windows. It’s not got any glue so won’t damage the display.

Thank you for the answer and all explanations. System might have a good processor, could run even games smoothly. Yet... All I will ever see will be a huge screen, that has %70-80 unusable part. Even the buttom usable part, I can't change the widgets (there are no more widgets). Can only use pre-installed 6 wallpapers (all race to be the most useless). I dont care if the system gives 60 fps for the latest AAA games cause I have no intentions to play games while parking. You say the system could run games. Ok, but can I place a quick call symbol on the screen? If not, what is the point of the good processor. What people with normal mental health and intelligence would place such a huge screen, think to add karaoke feature but makes it all blank and totally useless when driving. My system doesn't have built in navigation, doesn't allow me to add 3rd party apps without changing software (risking waranty). Even if I install additional apps, my first question will still be valid. Steering wheel of BYD models with leather center gives me a better quality feeling (for me). Your model and my model have same round plastic steering wheel center which gives a cheaper interior feeling. Also in your model, when you place the phone on charger, you can see your screen. In my car, when I put my phone in its slot, it sits tilted forward. I read somewhere that this feature is to prevent the driver from looking at the phone screen. I think BYD cars cames with advanced batteries and motors and other major componenets. However, they are unfortunately a bit weak in areas such as ergonomics and driver interaction.

If you really want everything from your phone without Android Auto which is the thing btw restricting the apps... just buy a Carlinkit. You plug it in to the USB and car thinks its CarPlay but launches full Android. No App limits. Beware tho, some countries will fine you for example watching YouTube or videos. No need then to sideload apps. But it can't access thi g's native to your car ecosystem is all.

Second best option will be using some sort of android box. I checked afew models today. Some were compatible only with cabled android auto. With a very short search I couldnt find the best buy for me. You need to sort out your Android Auto problem rather than whinge here about how big the screen is. If it annoys you, downgrade to a 12.1 " screen, they will work fine. I upgraded mine from 12 to 15.7" just so the maps and iHeart radio look better in split screen mode in AA.

Hi for chinsese firmware changing desktop is very easy just copy the image to pen drive connect and use seetings to install

Unless you are owner of reddit or selected spokesperson, who are you to judge my complain? What is the problem for you? Me, not responding your answer or not clicking your link? Just google and see peoples complains and their effort to find a solution. Even if you read other comments under this post you will read. And check the pictures to see a owner taping his screen. This is just a car with a poorly developed screen for the driver experience. This is not related to any religion, belief or anything someone can get personel. Even the designers or developers wouldn't take this complain personel. If they were taking these complains personel, they wouldnt decide to discontinue rotating screen function. Why would someone gets so offended for a complain? Because they have nothing to hang on in life and take anything about their car personel??? Lastly, if you are that incapable to park a car or follow navigation on a 12.1 screen, first get a pair of googles and driving/parking lessons.

You can change the wallpaper with any image you want, just put the pic on a usb key, browse files and set it as wallpapers. With Android auto I can use mostly any apps I've got on phone (mine is a ATTO2 or Dolphin), I just use maps or waze, spotify, AMP or youtube music with the phone profile (so the paid version). I really find it very rsponsive, can't see how could you had better infotainment, maybe just tesla, but I've got for rent in vacation/work opel, toyota, peugeot and ford they were all lag, android auto was only by cable and not wireless and sometimes didn't connect at all (ford).

Thanks for the answer. BYD Atto 3 I have has no navigation. Wallpaper can not be changed in default state. Also for some reasons I can not understand, most of the apps do not work on android auto. I see no benefit in using android auto also. Only addition it provides is, showing the google maps and I didnt use it for actually finding an adress. Since using android auto has almost no use, I just want to custumize my screen to make it less visually disturbing. It's unacceptable that BYD is forcing me to pay third-party services in order to use the vehicle I purchased. If the screen set up and useage is so poor, I mustn't be forced to use android auto. What I want is to connect my phone and listen to music, news and political programs. All I ask is not to stare at this empty screen with an unusable huge gap which has 6 wallpapers of all not appeling. Which I never experinced in my former cars or other cars known to me. I have neither animosity nor partnership with BYD, Peugeot, or any other company. My first screen was stats page, just by skipping 2nd page I hade my quick calls and other quick access functions and 3rd page was built in navigation page. In low light mode, the light was never bothersome and wasn't visually unappealing.

could you post the sw version you are on? maybe it's a specific version for your nation? For example, on your image I see tyre pressure in bar, mine are shown in kPa and I can't change it, so probably is a different sw version.

My car was changed with waranty. I don't want to side load anything that might risk waranty. I found a android box (I think sharing model will be incorrect). Seller told me, stocks will be renewed next month. I will try it later. But, anyway it is really a shame. Why I can't enjoy my car without using android auto or changing software. Using a better android auto with extra device will just make the screen be less disturbing. Still, best would be to use onboard program with real widgets.
